1. Fender were in the dolrums in the early-mid 80's & basically didn't have a f***ing clue what they were doing. At this time the only Fender worth bothering with was a Japanese one - even Fender USA admitted this. As others have said, there was little in the way of "standard" models then, it was whatever bits of leftover stuff they had lying around got bolted together. That scratchplate is perfectly normal for the time stated. If the seller is asking vintage money for it I wouldn't bother.
  2. f*** me, that was quick! PM me your address & I'll post them to you this week when I get a chance. I don't want anything for them but a few quid donation to Ped would be a nice gesture.
  3. Just found two unused, as new GHS Bass Boomers strings, gauges 45 & 105 in my parts box. If anybody wants them give me a shout & you can have them.
  4.
They used a Yamaha YC-30 for it, it had a slide thing on the top (not sure the technical term.)
It's called a Ribbon Controller.
  5. Sorry for the short notice but there's a documentary on BBC4 at 9pm this evening on Barbara Thompson, followed by a short programme of live footage.
  6.
Very expensive instruments are easy to play and make sound nice, its the budget ones which don't sound too great unless you really concentrate on technique, and are likely to sound squeaky or make odd noises.
I've found the same thing to be true with girlfriends.
  7.
And of course there's the famous video of the guy on talkbass who swopped the body of his alder Jazz Bass with a plank he found in his shed, then recorded a demo with the original bass and one with the body replaced with the plank. Could anybody tell the difference?
The neck pocket was better on the plank.
  8.
Blahblahblahblah......... I’m wondering how easy it would be to measure the relative partial/overtone profile of a really great sounding bass, and try and replicate it by predicting what the partial profile of a new bass would be.
The first, and most difficult thing to do will be to try & get a definitive answer as to what constitutes "A really great sounding bass". Let us know when you've done that - it'll be fascinating to hear the answer. I won't be holding my breath.
  9.
Thanks for the answers guys! But whats your opinion to Ashdown and Funk? Oldschool fingerstyle shouldn´t be a problem but what is with clean slapsounds? Too muddy?
It will also depend on what type of bass you're using. I always used my Ashdown with the EQ disengaged & the slap sound I got from my Zon Legacy was fantastic. If you're using something passive which will sound a lot duller then you might have to fiddle with the EQ a bit. I never found the amp to sound muddy, even with very bassy sounds.
  10. I don't play anything at all. I'll plug it in to make sure everything works as it should, I'll inspect it for damage and will play every note on every string to check for buzzing, choking etc. If everything is OK then I'll buy it. I'm buying a bass, not trying to pass an audition.
  11.
Is Geddy Lee dead?
This thread certainly was until this morning - it's nearly four years old!
  12.
I can assure you that you most definitely did. I hope you didn't buy a TC Electronic Classic 450...........I did
No, I bought an EBS Gorm 350 watt 1x15 combo which I can't sell for love nor money.
  13. The old ones are superb. I used to have an ABM C110 combo & it sounded great - nice & warm but still very clear. The DI's on them are fantastic too - really quiet. I only got rid of it because I fancied a change & often think I did the wrong thing in doing so.
  14. That's bad news, as you were obviously really enjoying playing with them. Still, that's the nature of bands for you - a few hours fun when you're actually playing but 10 times as much bullshit when you're not. I just had an offer to join a band that in theory would be right up my street but I just know it won't work out like that so I'm not even going to waste time trying. Good luck with finding something else soon (if that's what you choose to do).
  15. Withdrawn - now selling locally.
  16. Mary Hopkin, now there's a name I wouldn't have expected to crop up in this thread..... While the subject is on Genesis I have to add the mellotron intro to "Watcher of the Skies" - best intro of all time IMO.
  17.
Still not heard "Hold Your Fire" though.
I'm not a fan of this one. Next to the truly godawful "Test For Echo" it's my least favourite Rush album.

    SOLD

These are great pedals. I used to have a Voodoo Vibe & that was awesome.
  19.
Mine include a couple of links that Tommy Vance used to use on his Friday Rock SHow. I loved the show but he used to use these great instrumental pieces to link things. They included the opening theme off Take It Off the Top' by the Dixie Dregs and a section of AL DiMeola's 'Chasin' The Voodoo'.
He also used to use Mahavishnu's "Can't Stand Your Funk" if I remember correctly. I've always loved Steve Howe's brief bit of harmonics noodling/tuning checking on his acoustic 12 string before starting to play "And You & I" on "Close to the Edge". It just sets the stage beautifully for what I think is the best track Yes ever recorded.
  20.
I love Power Windows and everything about it, including the bass sound. Starting to look like I'm very much in the minority.
I love Power Windows, it's one of my favourite Rush albums. It's got some of Geddys best ever playing on it IMO, I just hate the bass sound. Luckily I don't listen to records just for the bass sounds.
  21. Wow! Green Sparkle Paisley - now THAT'S what I call a finish! If that had a maple fingerboard I'd go out & buy a bass just so I could swap it for this!
  22. I live in a terrace & only ever play through headphones at home. The problem with bass is that it really carries even at low volumes.
  23. Try the D'addario's & see how long they last. The other good thing I found with the SIT strings was that they lasted for ages.
  24.
Also getting into Signals, so what bass is on that? :-) Jennifer
That's his Rickenbacker as far as I'm aware - he certainly played a Rick for all the material on the Signals tour when I saw them all those years ago. "Signals" has got my favourite Geddy tone. I liked the sound of his Steinberger too, not that fussed on the Jazz and (as previously stated) hate his twangy Wal sound.
