Tonewoods, hardware and the science of great tone
RhysP replied to Max Normal's topic in General Discussion
Blahblahblahblah......... I’m wondering how easy it would be to measure the relative partial/overtone profile of a really great sounding bass, and try and replicate it by predicting what the partial profile of a new bass would be.
The first, and most difficult thing to do will be to try & get a definitive answer as to what constitutes "A really great sounding bass". Let us know when you've done that - it'll be fascinating to hear the answer. I won't be holding my breath. -
Thanks for the answers guys! But whats your opinion to Ashdown and Funk? Oldschool fingerstyle shouldn´t be a problem but what is with clean slapsounds? Too muddy?
It will also depend on what type of bass you're using. I always used my Ashdown with the EQ disengaged & the slap sound I got from my Zon Legacy was fantastic. If you're using something passive which will sound a lot duller then you might have to fiddle with the EQ a bit. I never found the amp to sound muddy, even with very bassy sounds.

I don't play anything at all. I'll plug it in to make sure everything works as it should, I'll inspect it for damage and will play every note on every string to check for buzzing, choking etc. If everything is OK then I'll buy it. I'm buying a bass, not trying to pass an audition.
Is Geddy Lee dead?
This thread certainly was until this morning - it's nearly four years old!
I can assure you that you most definitely did. I hope you didn't buy a TC Electronic Classic 450...........I did
No, I bought an EBS Gorm 350 watt 1x15 combo which I can't sell for love nor money.

The old ones are superb. I used to have an ABM C110 combo & it sounded great - nice & warm but still very clear. The DI's on them are fantastic too - really quiet. I only got rid of it because I fancied a change & often think I did the wrong thing in doing so.

That's bad news, as you were obviously really enjoying playing with them. Still, that's the nature of bands for you - a few hours fun when you're actually playing but 10 times as much bullshit when you're not. I just had an offer to join a band that in theory would be right up my street but I just know it won't work out like that so I'm not even going to waste time trying. Good luck with finding something else soon (if that's what you choose to do).

Mary Hopkin, now there's a name I wouldn't have expected to crop up in this thread..... While the subject is on Genesis I have to add the mellotron intro to "Watcher of the Skies" - best intro of all time IMO.
Still not heard "Hold Your Fire" though.
I'm not a fan of this one. Next to the truly godawful "Test For Echo" it's my least favourite Rush album.
Mine include a couple of links that Tommy Vance used to use on his Friday Rock SHow. I loved the show but he used to use these great instrumental pieces to link things. They included the opening theme off Take It Off the Top' by the Dixie Dregs and a section of AL DiMeola's 'Chasin' The Voodoo'.
He also used to use Mahavishnu's "Can't Stand Your Funk" if I remember correctly. I've always loved Steve Howe's brief bit of harmonics noodling/tuning checking on his acoustic 12 string before starting to play "And You & I" on "Close to the Edge". It just sets the stage beautifully for what I think is the best track Yes ever recorded.
I love Power Windows and everything about it, including the bass sound. Starting to look like I'm very much in the minority.
I love Power Windows, it's one of my favourite Rush albums. It's got some of Geddys best ever playing on it IMO, I just hate the bass sound. Luckily I don't listen to records just for the bass sounds.

I live in a terrace & only ever play through headphones at home. The problem with bass is that it really carries even at low volumes.

Try the D'addario's & see how long they last. The other good thing I found with the SIT strings was that they lasted for ages.
Also getting into Signals, so what bass is on that? :-) Jennifer
That's his Rickenbacker as far as I'm aware - he certainly played a Rick for all the material on the Signals tour when I saw them all those years ago. "Signals" has got my favourite Geddy tone. I liked the sound of his Steinberger too, not that fussed on the Jazz and (as previously stated) hate his twangy Wal sound.

A Wal with (I think) very light guage Superwound Funkmaster strings (30-90 if I remember correctly from when I used them on my Jaydee). A very similar sound can be obtained by stretching four thin elastic bands across an old shoe box - bloody awful! (IMO of course ).
Encore P copy through a Carlsbro Stingray.
That set up probably would have sounded a lot better (see comments above).

I've had nothing but good experiences buying & selling on here.

What influences your bass purchases?
RhysP replied to originalfunkbrother's topic in General Discussion
Price. I've got less money than I've ever had in my life, so how much something costs is paramount. Unfortunately the basses I play are just too expensive for me to even consider buying one now, even secondhand. I'm just thankful I got my hands on a couple of fantastic basses while I had the money. -
Those Galveston 12vers are meant to be pretty good - they've got a loyal following on the 12 string bass forum.

Welcome to the forum from another Gormenghast fan (with that user name I'm assuming you are too).
No..I'm thinking that maybe I should have bought a gallon of petrol and a box of matches as well..
That is incredibly wasteful of you - petrol is a finite resource after all......

Can't you get them to play in Cardiff?
