(And atm it looks like 5-3 to Cardiff, so the Blues are winning so far ).
If you're counting me in the 5-3 then don't, as I won't be able to be involved wherever it's held. Still winning 4-3 though.....
  2. If you refer to Zons as "Silly Basses" again I will have something to say about it......

  4.
I think the Jazz with the split coils looks awesome... *shrug* but then I'm a bit of a newbie to bass so what do I know?
If you like it that's all that matters. You've got sh*t taste mind......
  5.
As usual the Fender design department are bereft of good ideas and the management are found wanting. It's probably the last combination they've left to try out. It's Fender's customers fault. They seem to be quite happy to buy any old stuff that gets produced so why would you expect Fender to do anything else?
Totally 100% this.
  6. If you don't feel like doing it then don't, and don't give yourself a hard time abut it either.
  7.
On my 5er I use 55-75-95-120-145 which suits me quite well. The 145 is a beast! D'Addario nickel rounds.
Now THAT'S a proper set of strings! I currently use 45 - 130's but find myself wanting to go heavier - I'll have to check these out.
  8.
Rob Allen basses are really nice and great for DB emulation but out of my price bracket, in a similar vein
You could always sell that old refinished bass with the dodgy frets you've got.
  9.
So the 2m of cable between the 100m of cheap copper cable and RCD's and Fuses and screw terminals and weakened hard strand where the sparky has bent it a few times and lumps of mortar and switches which youve sparked a zillion times that makes up your house wiring and your super dooper amp/turntable/CD/DAB etc makes all the difference!!
Cynic. 10.
It's a very insistent SatNav, isn't it?
Yeah - it's not a TomTom, it's a RobRob.
  11. Because Pete Cornish is a legend who builds custom pedalboards & stuff for lots of famous guitarists, and people like to own stuff with exclusive names that their heroes use. Most of use have done it with some bit of gear at some point. Apparently it's his wife that puts the cables together though, so I don't know if this would effect the price if it was common knowledge.
  12.
Besides this thread is about progress on an instrument by playing another, not about being able to read.
Indeed. Fascinating though it is, Let's not take a detour down that particular road AGAIN, eh?
  13.
Over the past couple of months, I have hardly played bass at home, but I play guitar every day. And when I go to rehearsals as a bassist and play songs we know, and work on new songs, I am a much better bassist. I am more fluid, more imaginative, more dynamic, more expressive and more comfortable.

I can completely relate to this. My biggest leap forward in bass playing occurred after a 5 year break from playing bass as my main instrument which included a 2 year break from playing in a band.
I found exactly the same thing. Lost all interest in playing bass & just played keyboards & guitar for years. I'm a lot happier with my bass playing now I've gone back to it because I don't obsess over it like I used to. Personal circumstances stop me from being able to commit to playing with other people at present, but the times I have done since picking up the bass again I've found I enjoy it more than ever, and am comfortable utilising my strengths on the instrument rather than just worrying about my weaknesses like I always used to.
  14. So at present there are more people from Bristol wanting a Cardiff bass bash than people in Cardiff. Here's a thought - Why not have a Bristol bash bass that the one or two interested Cardiff people can come along to if they so wish?
  15.
....but to not care at all what any instrument sounds like is an anathema to me.
It's not that I don't care about my sound, it's just that I've played enough different basses through enough different amps over the last 30+ years to realise that I sound pretty much the same whatever I'm using. I'm not going to spend countless hours pondering over different pickup & preamp combinations or whatever, because the difference to me will be fairly miniscule - I find that the old law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty rapidly when you take things to this level. You also tend to be permanently unhappy with your sound & wasting money on gear that you don't keep for more than a few weeks. I'd rather just say "That sounds OK" & play the f***ing thing.
  16. I used to use one of the very early Trace rigs (the black painted wood cabinet ones) when I had a Jaydee & was a bit of a Mark King obsessive. It did that sound great but I found it a bit insipid for anything else (much like the Jaydee bass actually). Found it quite unreliable for gigging too - it used to cut out quite often when it got heated up. I always hated that pre-shape switch sound that everybody seemed to love. Tried one of the newer SMX models years later & was astonished how bad it was - component quality was pretty poor & it was incredibly noisy, even at low levels. I think they'd moved production overseas by then.
  17.
IMO Zons do the graphite thing way better than Modulus..
The Zon Standard range are the import models & have three piece maple necks, not carbon fibre.
  18.
Sound is vital. How can anyone not care about what they sound like?
But it's completely subjective isn't it? What some people think is a great tone others will hate. I was at a jam session the other month where the house bass player was using a Precision through an SVT & I thought it sounded bloody awful - boomy, farty & indistinct. There were other players there who were wetting themselves with delight over it though. Doubtless those same players would hate the clarity & definition of My EBS combo & Zon basses. There are also varying degrees of "caring" about your sound. I've never obsessed about it like some people do on here - the amount of gear that people go through in the quest for the mythical "great tone" never fails to amaze me. I've only had four amps/combos in 32 years of playing, and the reasons I sold one to buy the next were all mainly practical reasons & had little to do with the sound.
  19. I'm 46 with a herniated lumbar disc & I recently bought the heaviest combo I've ever owned. I just point at my back & get other people to move it.
  20. It's just not cost effective to have a wide range of interesting colour options available on instruments that are aimed at people with incredibly conservative/traditional tastes. The large majority of Fenders sold are probably sunburst ones. It's a real shame because some of the Fender custom colours are fantastic.
  21. If you're going to do it properly you need to do it on a tape loop like the original.
  22. I've played a lot of Wals & briefly owned one. I swapped one of my Rickenbackers for one in the early 80's and was so unimpressed with it I swapped back again a week later. There was nothing "wrong" with it, I just didn't get on with it. They are nicely made basses but I have to say I really don't get the mythological status that has built up around them, and certainly can't believe the money they change hands for. I can't help but wonder how much of this is due to Wal dying, and would they be as sought after today if he was still alive. At the end of the day they're like any other bass - some people won't like them for various reasons but for some they will be the ultimate electric bass.

Just bought a Peterson Stroboflip from Graham - great price & delivered pretty quickly. (Also bought a couple of EBS pedals from him a few months ago but forgot to leave feedback - no problems with that deal either).
  24. I have a fretless but don't have, or any interest in having, an acoustic bass of any kind.
