1. I was thinking of building a pedalboard, but instead of using Velcro to hold the pedals I'd paint it with magnetic paint & use stick-on magnetic strip on the base of the pedals. This seems like a good idea to me but I've never heard of anyone else doing it so I wondered why not. Will the magnetism cause any problems with interference or damage the circuits in the pedals in any way? Apologies to the electronics experts out there who will no doubt think this is a really stupid idea!
2.
Hah, so much for the rioting last night though ey?
There were a couple of houses set on fire in Canton (where I live!) by all accounts, but they were empty properties & the fires were dealt with before they got serious.
3. I used to use SIT strings on my Hamer 12 string bass when I had it & they were great.
4. Let's wait & see how all this rioting on the streets malarky pans out before deciding to gather loads of expensive bass equipment together in one place, eh?
5. If you want high end zing & burp check out EBS gear. Not cheap but bargains can be found. I got my EBS Gorm 350 watt combo as ex-demo for £500 & it's superb. I'm listening to Pat Metheny on radio 2 as well.
6.
I never knew Jaco died from beating beaten up. I thought he was stabbed. Can someone explain how he died.
He was trying to get into a late bar in Fort Lauderdale & was beaten into a coma by the bouncer. He was pronounced dead nine days later.
7.
Japan seem to be making better Fenders than the Americans right now.
They always have. There's a rather lovely Mike Lull 5 string jazz on Ebay at the moment: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mike-Lull-5-stri...=item2eb6d4b2b3
8. You'll need a hi-viz jacket & steel toecap boots.
9.
I like him. He's an awesome player and he actually speaks a lot of sense.
This.
10. I play my fretless with a pick sometimes - so what? I've seen Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree play his Wal fretless with a pick too.
11. My main guitar/bass to amp lead I bought sometime in the mid 80's. It's a Monster cable but I changed one of the jacks to a right angled Switchcraft one. It's the lead I used for all my gigs (when I was stupid enough do that sort of thing) & I never had a any problems with it.
12. "Last Chance on the Stairway" & "New Religion" would be my choices.
13. Saw them in Cardiff last night & they were superb. Completely sold out - never seen the CIA so packed. Seriously sweaty gig! The sound was fantastic - clear as a bell & perfectly mixed, if a little too polite volume-wise. Enjoyed what I saw of Airbourne as well, only caught about the last 20 minutes of their set. They had a bloody good sound too. A very enjoyable evening.
14.
in my book the coolest ever bass player is this woman.. in looks and playing..
When I saw the picture you posted the first thing that came into my mind was:
15. Excellent stuff! Guthrie is a f***ing monster player!!
16. I thought there was a Steinberger in the Smithsonian as well.
17.
Definitely Mr Levin on this, played on a P bass with a disposable nappy pushed under the strings according to the man himself.
"The Super Wonder Nappy Sound", as documented in Levin's excellent book "Beyond the Bass Clef".
18. Looks like he's using an Ibanez of some sort in that clip. Peggy has used loads of different basses over the years - Fenders, Riverhead, custom headless models made by Mike Vanden & lots of others. last time I saw Fairport he was using an Ibanez but he does use Crafter basses now apparently. A superb player, one of the best IMO.
19. That's a lot of trouble to got to for such a sh*te bass sound.
20. I've said it many times before, but the inconsistant quality of DR strings is atrocious, especially when you consider the price of them. Never had as many problems with a brand of string as I've had with DR. Electric guitar & acoustic guitar strings as well as bass have all been the same. Stopped using them ages ago.
21.
It's not too tough to get a sound out of any instrument and I should imagine as a stringed instrument getting a tune out of it would be fairly straight forward... I should imagine the difficulty would come with playing it properly/traditionally and being outside the comfort zone that western music offers. I'd really love to learn the Sitar actually! If you get unstuck, just buy one of the old Danelectro sitars. It's what can be heard at the start of 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' by Stevie and the solo of 'Do It Again' by Steely Dan.
Can't speak for the Stevie Wonder track, but it was a Coral Sitar that was used on "Do it again", not a Danelectro. 22. Bump for a superb bass at a daft price! Somebody buy this - Hamers are superb!!
23. Enjoying playing is far more important than being any good..... Welcome aboard.
24. EBS Octabass is the best one I've tried but they all burble a bit. The Octabass won't go nuts if you play more than one note at a time, it'll just sense the lowest note & add the octave to that.
25. I play guitar but to be honest I find keyboards far better to write on than guitar. I'm a much worse keyboard player than I am a guitarist or bassist but I just find keyboards more inspiring; I'm certainly a lot less likely to come up with a load of cliched rock riffs on keys than guitar.
