You're not joking, one on eBay £299 BIN
Really? Always wondered why Boss never reissued the Slow Gear; I think it must have been one of those things that didn't sell at the time but now everybody wants. Anyway; something similar: why not just use a volume pedal for swells? Too labour intensive for you?
I always thought Dare was real innovation in terms of classy synth pop - so much so that I even sold my first bass, a lovely little white Fender Musicmaster & traded it for a Sequential Circuits Pro-One
I'd say you got a good deal there - Pro-One's are superb synths. Do you still have it?
Will need to take a gander at Travelogue. Not familiar with anything they did pre-Dare.
You've never heard "Being Boiled"? I remember Sounds describing them as "A Hawkwind for the 80's" in an early live review. As it turned out the "Hawkwind for the 80's" was Hawkwind......

They did f*** about with the body shapes in the 80s - if you look at the cover of "The Fender Bass" by Klaus Blasquiz the two basses on there have the same body shape as the one in the Ebay auction.

That's fantastic, really enjoyed that. Clip 2 is great as well. I've only ever played with brass once and I loved it so much.
Some people are better or more naturally talented than others. For example, i have learned to play bass within two weeks, and i could now, pretty much play whatever you wanted; Funk, Indie, Rock, Metal ect. Whereas my friend has never had drum lessons, and he can play them better than most drummers i have seen. It just depends how musically inclined people are.
I've got to put this in the quotes thread - it's one of the funniest things I've ever read. Bet all you guys who have spent years having lessons & refining their playing are feeling pretty stupid now, aren't you? Two weeks.
Amazing combo! Worth mentioning however that while this is a fairly small combo it's power, volume and clarity is that of many full rigs. This will fill venues with no problem! Shep
Have a bump on me. I've got one of these and it's a superb bit of kit - £450 is a great price for a serious pro quality combo.

My Chapman Stick was made of oak. That was interesting wasn't it?

I missed both parts of the documentary - I'll try & watch them on the BBC iplayer before they get taken off. I was lucky enough to see Queen in 1976 & it's still one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Wasn't a big fan of their stuff after "Night at the opera" but those first four albums are just superb.

Can anyone point out a good example of fuzz/distorted bass?
RhysP replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Effects
"Think for yourself" by The Beatles (from "Rubber Soul"). First bass line I ever learned & a great old lo-fi fuzz sound. -
That was a disappointment - I thought "Bubble Burst" was going to be some kind of fancy custom finish. I've had two (both 1970's 4001 models) & just found they were not for me. Still think they look great though.
I think that more important than the 10,000 hour 'rule' is what you practice. If you spend 3-4 hours a day playing riffs and lines that you can already play and enjoy, you won't benefit as much as someone who studies new material for an hour.
This. 10,000 hours of pushing yourself with a properly structured learning schedule is going to have vastly superior results to 10,000 hours of noodling about playing the same old sh*te. I've never properly practiced scales or anything like that, and that's why despite playing for over 30 years I'm bloody rubbish.

If the bass plays fine & the wear isn't causing any problems I'd leave it. You could always have the frets dressed if it's bothering you.
It's not a very exciting angle Andrew, but I'd be interested to know how long any of the pedals can run with battery/DC power.
Good question, and something that is rarely if ever mentioned in pedal reviews.

Never mind, I'm sure you'll be able to afford a new bass one day. Lovely collection you've got there.

Anybody going to see Geddy and friends next month??
It's all going well until they say Working Them Angels is some of their fabulous tremendous best work
I'd agree with that actually - fantastic song. I'd put "Snakes & Arrows" up there with their best stuff. -
The strange and disturbing world of RICK-O-SOUND
Yes' "I've seen all good people" sounds like Chris Squire's Rick has the Rick-O-Sound outputs panned separately- or is it a guitar doubling his bassline?
Doubled on guitar. Squire did that a lot, using Steve Howe's ES175 to double his bass parts. -
I'm partial to a nice bit of flange myself.
I did see an idea for stereo on a guitar with two pickups angled so that one was closest to the low E and the other closest to the high E which in theory would pan the strings across part of the stereo image. I could imagine that sounding good on strummed or finger-picked chords.
The Kramer Ripley in the 80's had a system where each string had a pickup & a pan pot - the output was stereo & the strings could be panned to anywhere in the stereo image. God I remember some useless sh*te. -
What multi fx pedal would you recommend?
Oh God, I wish I hadn't started now! I prefer individual pedals to multi effects units, but the Boss ones are quite good. There's one for sale on here at the moment & is a good deal: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=137206. I like the TC Electronic G Major (or G Force or whatever it's called) rack mount multi effects unit, and they can be got for a good price secondhand. I don't really keep up with what's available in the multi effects market - there are people on here who could help you more than I could. Have you tried doing a search for "Multi effects" on the forum?
-
Seriously enjoying John McLaughlin's latest album "To The One" at the moment. Etienne M'bappe's playing is awesome & his tone is fantastic. Listening to a lot of McLaughlin's stuff again at the moment; "Industrial Zen", the superb "John McLaughlin Trio live at the Royal Festival Hall" & "Belo Horizonte".
-
How many different effects are you actually going to need? If it's only 2 or 3 then IMO you're probably better off buying individual pedals. If you need more than that then there are plenty of good multi effects units available that will be a lot more flexible & sound better than the POD effects. Always worth checking the "Effects for sale" section on here, there's always plenty of choice. This is all just my opinion mind; you might try a POD & find the effects are just what you're looking for. (I don't use my Bass POD anymore mainly because I think the effects suck - I record with a DI from my amp & am in the process of buying some pedals that'll do the job properly).
-
If all you'd be using it for is various effects then I'd say there are better options than using a POD. I've got a Bass POD XT & while it's useful for getting a decent recorded bass sound I've always found the effects section to be pretty sh*te, especially the choruses. The synth stuff isn't great either.

I'd love to hear some of the incredibly original & groundbreaking music that is being made by all these people on here who have cast off the shackles of conventional music theory & embraced raw naked atonal creativity.......
-
Cream Rush Beck, Bogart & Appice The Police Motorhead etc...... Plenty of great three piece bands have managed to scrape a living without their bassist playing a five string. Not saying don't give it a go, just saying it's by no means a necessity.
-
I would have liked to have been able to tick more than one box in the first section. I had up to £1000.00 to spend on a 5 string recently but would have spent considerably less if something I fancied had come up - the range I was looking at would have been about £400-£1000 but I couldn't do that on the poll. As it turned out nothing that interested me came up on the forum & I ended up buying my Bogart 5 string from Ebay. I'm not one of those people that changes their bass more often than their underwear - I'm perfectly happy with my Zons & now I've found a 5ver that I'm pleased with I won't be buying another bass (unless something terrible happens to one of mine). I have bought, sold & traded some things on here but I'm not a regular user; I do like to browse because some lovely & interesting stuff occasionally appears amongst the sea of Fenders. If I am selling something now (usually pedals & accessories rather than really expensive stuff) I will put it on here first before it goes on Gumtree & Ebay. There does also seem to be an increase in the number of people joining the forum solely to sell stuff - you never see these people post in any topics & I think that's a bit naughty. If it was my forum I'd have booted them off.
