Recommendations for fretless strings? I'm a fretless virgin!
RhysP replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I'd also consider giving nickel roundwounds a go if I were you - roundwound sound but kinder to your fingerboard than steels. If you want that classic fretless "mwah" sound you need to use roundwounds. -
Do the basslines/players on these tunes have flats on?
RhysP replied to NJE's topic in General Discussion
I would think most of them would have been wearing heels of some sort, definitely not flats. -
What is the best course of action?: A) what my gut says- tell the ungrateful pair of s****s to get F´d
Definitely go with your gut feeling. And don't bother with all this "Life's too short to be holding grudges" bollocks - take it with you to the grave. Grudges & bitterness make life worth living.

At the moment I'd have to say Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree.
From the OP, it sounds like the Singer/Songwriters are at demo level so pitch accordingly and my hint about mounting costs could be the difference between them and you doing it or not. If the ante is higher then get a more formal arrangement as above.
I'm actually recording the bass parts for an album (the artists third) that's being released at the end of July. It's a small project though that is being financed by the artist. The fact that most of the songs are in Welsh pretty much guarantees it isn't going to be a global smash hit, unless it goes platinum in Patagonia.
This does not sound a very formal session set-up so take it for what it is...an introduction and a chance to get involved and set your price accordingly. The first thing is to get another call, so take this into account in this enviroment.
This is what I was thinking - I'm more interested in getting asked back than making a fast buck.

Out of the blue I've been contacted by a local recording studio (where I've done some recording in the past) & asked if I'd be interested in doing session work for the singer/songwriters they get in from time to time. I'm very pleased & flattered to be asked but they want me to let them know how much I will charge for the session & to be honest I haven't got a clue where to start. Are there standard rates for this sort of thing? Do you charge by the hour or some other method? Any advice would be appreciated. Ta!

Which bass would you still go for if you already had too many?
After seeing Darren from the Pirate Twins playing a Status Series II with Thomas Dolby earlier in the year.....
Did you go to the Union Chapel "Flat Earth" gig? I'd love to have gone but it would have meant a stop-over & I couldn't get the following day off work. -

RhysP replied to 12stringbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Not a bass, but I would love to get another Chapman Stick to replace the one I foolishly sold a few years ago. (And if we're talking money no object I'd have a 5 string, a 6 string & an 8 string Zon Legacy to go with my two 4 strings). -

Superb! Schofield's great in that clip too.
Is it weird that my geddy lee sig has a lovely slap tone? I see how active pickups can help, but those complaining that passive basses don't sound good slapped, probably aren't doing something right.
Or maybe that's just their opinion.

Decided to get rid of my Ashdown ABM C110 combo as I just don't need a 300 watt amp anymore. I've owned it from new, bought it from Cranes in Cardiff in March 2002. Only gigged once & used for a handful of practices. Superb condition - only a couple of marks on the metal corner pieces stops me calling it pristine. This is one of the older UK built EVO models and sounds superb. I'm not really sure what these are worth so I'm going to ask for £250.00. (If this is really way off the mark please let me know) Collection only please. No trades.

It's stuff like this that makes me want a DB
There's no secret to Danny's playing. All you have to do is practice for 6 hours a day and play every gig & session that's offered to you. Repeat this for about 30 years and hey presto! instant Danny Thompson. Easy.
I don't have 30 years left........... -
It depends whether the signature model has some sensible & practical modifications to the "standard" model, and if it's a bass or guitar I'd consider using anyway. For example, I wouldn't buy a Geddy Lee Jazz because I don't like Jazz basses, even though I'm a huge Rush fan. I've had a few signature model guitars (Gretsch Brian Setzer & Elliot Easton models, Jackson Phil Collen model) which have been great instruments.

Who does this finish make you think of?

It makes me think of of Pete Way. -
Allan Holdsworth/Jimmy Johnson/Gary Husband Gig
I remember passing up an opportunity to see Holdsworth when he was playing with Level 42 - I can't even remember why now
You didn't miss anything. I saw them & he just looked bored & embarrassed most of the evening. He certainly didn't get a chance to play the way he's famous for. The most memorable thing he did all night was mess up the guitar solo in "Lessons in Love"!! -
Saw them in cardiff last night and they were mind blowingly good. Jimmy Johnson's tone, direct into the PA, is unbelievably perfect.

Alun I was there....! I don't know what you look like so couldn't say hello (otherwise I would have. I had a long chat with Jimmy at the Ronnies gig and he put me on the guest list for Cardiff (by chance I was visiting my brother who lives about 400yds from the globe). He's (Jimmy) a really lovely guy. I thought the sound was a bit duff in Cardiff but they coped with it amazingly well and the crowd in Cardiff gave them a hell of a lot more back than the Ronnies crowd. I thought the ensemble playing was fabulous.
I'd just like to say that I hate the pair of you. I'd have loved to have seen that gig but I'd have had to tell my sister that we weren't going to the Rush film & she'd have killed me. Did they have a good crowd then? -

I'd buy one if I thought I could play it as well as Danny Thompson does. That, however, is extremely unlikely..... -

Hawkwind - some great (and under-appreciated) bass playing
RhysP replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Calvert? I met him years ago,and have a battered book signed by him (Hype). Think it was HMV . He was a great, smashing polite bloke. He was gonna busk in the subway in Hammersmith telling people not to buy Hawkwind records i i r c . Don't know if he did. Next day , we both walked past each other in green park. We were both scratching our heads in a 'haven't I seen you somewhere before?' moment.
Hawkwind were never the same without Calvert IMO. He was unique. His solo stuff is great too - "Captain Lockheed & the Starfighters" is a long-time favourite of mine.
