1. I've always wanted one of those - they're f***ing fantastic basses! I may have to pay you a visit to have a look if you get it....... Have a look here for dating/serial number information: http://www.ovationguitars.com/?fa=codethree One thing you might not be aware of with these basses - there's a strange proximity effect thing that happens with one of the pickups (can't remember if it's neck or bridge) where if you bend a string the note just disappears. I think this is common to all Magnums but I'm not sure - maybe somebody could comment on this if they know for sure.
2. I've never owned one but they are bloody good basses.
3. How about "Waltzing's for dreamers" by Richard Thompson? (It's on his "Amnesia" album & it's a bloody fantastic song)
4. Did anybody on the forum buy the 5 string Zon Legacy with neck LEDs that finished on Ebay yesterday evening?
5. I wouldn't expect a standard set up to include anything to do with the electrics; it'd just be neck relief, bridge adjustment & a new set of strings. The crackling pot is probably being caused by the track in the pot becoming carbonised - this happens when pots are left untouched for any length of time. You could probably sort it out yourself with a can of electrical contact cleaner.
6. I use a Jacques "Meistersinger" analogue chorus pedal which is pretty damn superb. Works great for bass & guitar & has a really useful blend control, as well as the best designed battery holder I've ever used on a pedal - just open the little door & drop the battery in. Love it!
7. Maple & ash would be pretty toppy, especially with a bolt-on neck. You'd be better off going with mahogany for the sound you want IMO.
8.
Exercises away from your bass are pretty meaningless, mate. You actually had the required strength in your fingers when you were 3. Its the efficient use of muscles that matters not strength (I like to think of it as grace not power - liek a ballet dancer vs a weightlifter). The only exercises worth doing to improve finger dexterity are those that involve you doing the thing you need the dexterity for; playing the bass. You need to play things that are not comfortable until they become comfortable. Then you are progressing. It takes time and there are no short cuts.
Abso-bloody-lutely!! Great post.
9. I'm still desperately trying to find someone to give me a lift up to Swindon to get these off you.
10.
For one truly awful moment, I read this as Squier James Jamerson Signature Jazz ...
Same here.
11.
Hey guys! So here's the story... Am in a band at school and we have a new setlist, I have been self taught for the first 3 years of my playing and have just begun taking lessons from a very good teacher... and he has placed me at grade 5 as far as my technique and playing stand now of course I was pleased with this but he also pointed out that I had fallen into some bad habits as regards to my technique and we have begun working on this to get me out of the ruts I'm in...
I'd be wary of any teacher who imposes a "This is the right technique" regime - what's not right for him may be very comfortable & natural for you. There are plenty of excellent players who's techniques are very idiosyncratic & would be frowned at by the "Correct Technique Nazis"..
12. I would walk away from any band that insisted on going through with woeful crap like this. I'd feel more comfortable selling drugs to toddlers to raise £1000 than having to write some "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam" horseshit. At least that way I'd retain my dignity......
13. £250 for the pair? What is the Ohm rating of the cabs & where are you based?
14. I've never been involved with a woman that hasn't, at some stage, deeply resented the amount of time that music takes up in my life. Ironically, in the vast majority of these "relationships" the fact that I was a musician seemed to figure quite highly in the factors that made me attractive to the woman in the first place. They all think going out with someone in a band is dead f***ing cool until they realise how much of your time it takes up. I've quit bands I was happy with in the past because of the sh*t I got from whoever I was involved with at the time, & looking back without exception I wish I'd chosen the band over the woman.
15. Sorry for the slow reply - I thought this had dropped right off the radar! PM'd
16. Bill Bruford. Danny Carey. Gavin Harrison. Simon Phillips. Jeff Pocaro. David Francolini. And a thousand others. I love listening to great drummers - I'd far rather hear a drum solo than a bass solo.
17.
So we have a reformed Magazine with the white Jaguar bass.....
When I saw them In Manchester earlier this year Barry Adamson's sound was sh*t until he switched to his Ovation Magnum.
18. I remember seeing her on TV back in the 80s (I think it was the Whistle Test) & her playing totally blew me away. When I saw her she was playing a Stingray & was getting an incredible sound out of it.
19.
As used by Steve Diggle before he moved to guitar and my cousin Gary.
Steve Diggle used to play your cousin Gary? What sort of sound did he get out of him?
20. Danny Thompson is a f***ing legend!! His playing with Pentangle & John Martyn was just sublime.
