Don't know what your opinions on carbon fibre necks are, but: http://www.mansons.co.uk/shopping/categori...-4-bass-guitar/ Awesome bass & £51.00 change from your £2000.
I think his instrument has captured many a young lady.. fnar fnar
And he has the polaroids to prove it, apparently.....

I've never even tried to play it. Ever. I heard it, thought "that sounds like hard work" and left it at that.

I'm 44, in constant pain & waiting to have spinal surgery but I'm still thinking of getting an SVT rig....... Seriously, put your health first, you don't want to make your back worse. I've felt like I'm 84 for the past 18 months.
You know, sometimes it just reminds me of those 12-year old kiddies playing Jamiroquai stuff... OK, they KNOW the notes maybe, but they aren't tight at the end (and, with a bit more practice, I think, they could..), but, when, especially, being a bassist, what's the point then? But, then again, they get sweetest applauses (Basschat is not an exeption, sorry..), just because of what? Just because they're young and they try to come over the stuff, that normally shouldn't be taken by a kid?
That's the most patronising thing I've ever read.
You know, I could probably taken one of those Hadrien Feraud's solos, then get it down to the deepest f*ckin' bottom, but, rhythmically and musically (phrasing and stuff), I KNOW I couldn't make it, so, what's the point then? You'd praise me just for trying? Thanks, but I don't need that.
Maybe I missed something, but I didn't think this thread was about what YOU need or what YOU think is the point of anything. I'm not a supreme bass god like this Faithless guy Zoe, but I honestly thought you're playing was pretty good there.

I suppose even the beards & Fair isle jumpers of the folk musician are an image of sorts, aren't they? OK, I give up on this one.
I am alluding to your using a non-commercial genre of pub music in defence of the argument that dress is not important in a band, when everyone has been saying it is if you want to get beyond the pubs, is a bit like putting your b0ll0cks in a golf ball washer.
Where did I say the folk gigs were in pubs? A lot of the things I see are in small to medium sized theatre venues. I'm not talking about some sh*tty acoustic strumalong in the back room of a bar.
When was the last time you saw acoustic folk music a Wembley Arena?
Eh? Where did Wembley Arena come from? I must have missed a few posts.
Err the lasers and lights are part of the image.
But not in way that I think is relevant to this thread, which is about what people WEAR when playing.
Would you go to a gig if the band played behind a curtain in a dark room and there was nothing to look at at all?
If it was somebody I really liked then yes I would. Being quite a big fan of acoustic folk music I go to a lot of gigs where there are no light shows & the performers are just wearing their everyday clothes - I'm there for the music, not a bloody catwalk show & that goes for all styles of music I like. Obviously I'm in a minority here as a lot of people seem to be suggesting that the clothes are as important as the music. Maybe it's an age thing.
Do you go to listen to a band or to you go to see a band? Alex
That's just semantics. I have a blind friend who, when going to a gig, says he is going to "see" a band; it's just an expression. Speaking for myself, the primary reason I go to "see" a band is to hear the music, and hopefully (depending on the type of music) they'll have lots of nice lights & lasers to give me something to look at. What the people on the stage are wearing (with VERY few exceptions, such as acts like KISS, where the image is actually more interesting & entertaining than the music) is of no interest to me whatsoever.

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
RhysP replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
Hofner violin basses - would ANYONE have bothered with one of these horrendous pieces of sh*t if one of the bloody Beatles hadn't played one? I honestly don't think so. Sunburst finishes, especially Fender sunburst finishes. Black finishes*. Candyapple red finishes. Tortoiseshell scratchplates. *Unless it's an all black Precision or Stingray with a maple fingerboard. I'll allow them. -
I disagree. It certainly adds to the experience in my opinion, particularly live. Look at bands like The Cramps, The Ramones or more recently, Rob Zombie (White Zombie), Marilyn Manson, Slipknot etc... Adding a theatrical and visual aspect to the music you are playing, reinforces it all. Sure it can look dumb to people not into it, but for those who are, it's what they identify with.
It depends on the scale of the performance. I agree that visuals can make a huge difference to a gig (one of the most enjoyable bands I've ever seen live is Kiss), but Slipknot or Marilyn Manson would look pretty stupid dressed in full stage gear playing to 100 people in the function room of a hotel for a wedding reception. I've got to admit, if I ever go somewhere that has a live band playing & they come out on stage in matching outfits or suits* I head for the nearest exit. It makes me think "Grumbleweeds" or "Barron Knights" , and that makes me cringe. *Jazz combos excepted.
Get up 15 minutes earlier and play for 10 mins per day.
I really wouldn't feel like playing bass at 4.15am, and my partner wouldn't be too happy either.......

dead batteries, and corner shops in East London
BTW... rechargeables are not a good bet for low current drain applications (e.g. active bass). They also run down all by themselves very quickly.
Some bass manufacturers state that rechargeable batteries should not be used for their active circuits. -
I want that love again, that feeling when you play a bass line properly and it just makes you feel all warm inside! Whenever I pick up my bass I play the same stuff, get annoyed with myself and then that makes my playing worse. Sorry if that sounds a little unclear, I'm sure someone somewhere knows what I mean!
That's exactly how I've been feeling about my bass playing for a good few years now. Unfortunately there are 1000 other things in my life need attending to before I can even consider getting a bass out of it's case, let alone playing it, so I've done nothing about it.

Me. I'm in Cardiff.

I love carbon fibre necks - my Zon has an evenness of response and tone that I love. I don't really agree with the "artificial sounding" comments as I've heard plenty of wood necked basses that sound far more clinical than my Zon. I think they can feel a bit too rigid for some people, which is fair enough. All this stuff is subjective, so it really is a case of trying to see if you get on with one. (The other thing I love about them is not having to mess about with a bloody truss rod anymore - want to change your string gauge? NO PROBLEM!!).
My Dad ended up walking away from a former large box shifting store (rhymes with Pound Patrol !) with a brand new US Gretsch Firebird 6131 (RRP £1699) for £399. They had it marked as an Electromatic (Made in Korea), he even asked them if it was the right price and they said it was !
Now THAT'S what I call a result!
This is what happens: People that can play will turn it down; people that can't will play as loud as possible.
Ain't that the truth.......people who are completely unable to tune a guitar or bass seem to play the loudest and longest. Excruciating.

About to pull the trigger on this ... (78 Precision)
RhysP replied to PapillonIrl's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd think long and hard about that one. Despite the prices they are going for these days a lot of mid to late 70s Fenders are pretty awful; heavy, lifeless planks. I wouldn't even consider buying one without trying it first. If I was going to buy a Fender Precision I'd go for a Japanese one or a newer USA model. I really don't understand it; not that long ago you couldn't give a 70s Fender away, now the prices have gone through the roof everybody wants one! -
thanks for the feedback guys.do you know of any players that use fretless basses for heavier styles?i can only think of les claypool and steve di gorgio from the metal band death.might be worth me checking out some people for guidance,t
Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree - not the heaviest band out there but they have plenty of loud & heavy moments.
