1. It has to be my best bargain ever, it's a superb guitar too.
2. It's "cliquey" for f***s sake, not clicky. Right, carry on...
3. Richard Thompson guitar tuition CDs, bloody impossible.
4. I pretty much play acoustic guitar exclusively these days. I've already got a lovely acoustic guitar (an Alister Atkin Rosewood OM Standard) But I've recently been toying with the idea of getting another one, maybe a dreadnaught. For as long as I can remember every guitar & bass I've bought has been secondhand & I also just fancied treating myself to a brand new one for a change. I was well aware of Avalon guitars & how good they are but couldn't justify paying £3000 & upwards as my playing is basic to say the least. Anyway, last week I saw this on Ebay. It's an Avalon Pioneer D2-20 dreadnaught - solid indian rosewood back & sides, solid sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard & finished off with beautiful flamed sycamore binding. The Avalon workshop was selling it as an ex demo model but to all intents & purposes it's a brand new guitar. The luthiers at Avalon gave it a full set up & even installed an extra strap button for me free of charge. If it wasn't ex demo the guitar would cost £2995 - I got it for £999. Took delivery of it on Thursday & it's an absolutely stunning guitar in every aspect. Couldn't be happier with it. These are the photos Avalon took of the guitar at their workshop:
5.
Never heard of Lettuce. Just listened to the first couple of minutes of that live set.
They've done lots more stuff, that's just the tip of the Iceberg...
6. The Trace Elliot pre shape sound is one of my least favourite amp sounds of all time. Never understood why it was so popular. I really don't like Smiley Face graphic settings in general though.
7. I've not heard much Keane stuff but I remember seeing them on TV at some huge concert (maybe Live 8?) & thinking they were bloody great live.
8.
I did give some thought to the pickups being too high and dropped the bridge unit a couple of mm, bit to no effect. There's a pack of Elixir Nanowebs incoming, so I'll swap them over when they arrive. The old set of Elixirs were on for nearly a year and the only reason I changed them was the E was getting dull...the rest were OK. I did a bit of searching online and found a thread on Talkbass where a guy had the same issue with a set of DRs. I just don't get how a string can be dodgy, let alone two in the same set. Hopefully, when the new set arrives, problem will go away. I'm kind of done with Dunlops now. You get what you p(l)ay for, I suppose.
I've had whole packs of DRs that were completely f***ed from the outset, bass strings & acoustic guitar strings. I stopped using them because I had so many duff sets, the acoustic strings especially. Absolute garbage considering how much they cost. Went over to Newtone strings for bass & acoustic & haven't had a problem since.
9. The song. Most of the stuff I listen too doesn't even have bass on it.
10. I was in an originals band once where I used to play the theme from Steptoe & Son as the intro to one of their songs.
11. They get lots of great reviews. The 200 watts is peak power though, the RMS is a lot lower.
12. The shape looks quite a lot like Queensryche's "Triryche" logo.
13. My bass. I've never been that interested in amps, so long as I can hear myself & it doesn't sound totally sh*te I'm OK.
14. I've been playing for 36+ years & still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
15. If you like the bass & it'll get used then why not?
16. My worth as a musician is the same as it is in every other aspect of my life - f*** all.
17. I was in Manchester for a conference yesterday & today. Went to The Band On The Wall last night to see The Tim Garland Electric Quartet - great gig & a great little venue.
18. I'd like to have been either an excellent songwriter or an excellent pianist.
19.
...if I pull the knob I get a 12db boost...
I'm sure you do...
20. Discreet uses a cajon bag to carry his One 10, as I'm sure do many others. Here's a link to his thread about the cab - the cajon stuff starts on page 4 at post #112 if you can't be arsed reading the whole thread... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/284370-ncd-barefaced-one10-review/page__st__90
