1. It doesn't look any less comfortable to play than a Rick....
2.
I didn't notice the pickups, I thought they were the Bartolini pickups used normally - can you tell me a bit about these? Looks like they have a 'bp' logo?
They're Bartolini's Ped, the older ones that Zon used to use had that little bp logo on them
3. Back in 2003 I went to see (ex Zappa guitarist) Mike Keneally play a solo show in a little club in Cardiff. During the first half I noticed a guy standing to one side of the small crowd who looked familiar. When the interval came I could contain my curiosity no longer and went up to the guy & said "Excuse me, are you Dave Gregory?" It was indeed. Had a brief chat to him about Skylarking as I'm a massive Todd Rundgren fan & I knew he was too. A really lovely bloke. He got up & played a few songs with Keneally at the end of his second set & he really is a bloody great guitarist.
4.
The crucial 3 albums; Skylarking Apple Venus Nonsuch Followed by; Wasp Star English Settlement Oranges and Lemons
Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with that.
5.
@tertiumquid : Good ol' Italy @ped : yes it is. I was not aware that there Legacy are very sought after because of the special pickups. The sound is to die for, aggressive, warm and extremely musical.
It's the Polyfusion preamp that makes them sound so good too. I used to own two Legacy four strings - best basses I ever had.
6. Seems like a good idea for somebody that would like to access internet based radio stations but for some reason doesn't or can't use a computer.
7. I would assume the lower the action the more rattles & buzzes you'll hear when unamplified, especially if you don't play with a featherlight touch. I don't know personally as I've always preferred my action on the medium to high side.
8. It doesn't really bother me. I always buy Hiscox cases for my guitars & basses anyway as the majority of branded cases are crap IMO. Fender tweed cases are impractical, heavy, badly balanced things anyway - the first thing I did when I got my CIJ Precision was get rid of the tweed case.
9. I don't really have any "must-haves", only "must-nots".
10. If it's not being amplified then most players wouldn't regard it as a problem.
11. Finding a pick that suits you if the most difficult thing, I've been using picks on bass & guitar since I started playing & I'm still trying different ones. I have found that, contrary to what I first believed, really thick picks are not that good. I started using thinner but rigid carbon nylon picks a few years that I really liked but I now use Pyramid cellulose picks in medium & heavy gauges & I really like these. I love these but unfortunately they are very difficult to find. I've always found thumb picks to be more trouble than they're worth. Don't get too hung up on how you hold the pick. I always found that the pick naturally rotates in my grip so that I end up using one of the rounded corners rather than the pointed bit. It used to bother me until I found out that's how Pat Metheny holds his picks - if it's OK for Pat it's OK for me.
12. Seems a bit cheeky to me seeing as they're a cover band as well.
13. A friend of mine used to have one exactly the same as that in the mid 80s, it might even be the same one.
14. Forgot to mention the Warwick Corvette, which I think is the ugliest bass I've ever seen.
15.
I genuinely don't get the over-priced thing.
"Overpriced" = "Can't afford it" in the majority of cases.
16.
I don't have a list of specific things I hate, I think some things, like single cuts & fancy woods, work on some basses better than others. Having said that I saw this the other day, http://fodera.com/anthony-jackson-presentation/ Which as far as I'm concerned is very nearly through the far end of the spectrum of ugly & in danger of emerging out the other side.
That is what I would refer to as a "Turd on a stick".
17. I'm always happy to blather on about stuff I don't like as I have a very deep well to draw from.... As far as basses go: Sunburst finishes Tort scratchplates Blocks & binding on necks. The metal control plate on Jazz basses Jazz basses generally Spalted wood tops Burl wood tops Single cutaways That stupid, tacky, cheap looking butterfly logo that Fodera use Hofner violin basses PJ pickup arrangements Oil or wax finishes on neck and/or body Candy apple red finishes White finishes I'm sure there's more...
18. Colin Moulding used an Epiphone Newport & a Wal. I can only take their earlier stuff in small doses before it starts to irritate me. Skylarking, however, is one of my favourite albums ever.
19. I wouldn't buy anything from him just for saying "Everything is cool bro".
20. Acoustic bass guitars are a waste of time for open mic type things, you just won't be heard over the other instruments.
