1.
Wait, does this mean you do a full set-up every time you change your strings?!
Yes, if it needs it. I'll always check the intonation & neck relief when I put new strings on & adjust it if necessary.
 2. They were great quality instruments. I played a few in the early 80s, including a stunning fretless. There was a model that was quite an unusual shape, I think John Martyn used the guitar version for a while.
 3. The Beatles without a doubt. Never liked Daltrey's voice, always preferred Pete Townshend.
It's a gorgeous bass... but I'm not sure it's really a "Geddy Lee" any more? Isn't it mostly the neck that identifies that sig model?
That's what I was thinking.
 5.
Just wondering but why would he need a capo unless he was playing open-string chords?...
Because open strings & fingering patterns would remain the same as he plays them now relative to the capo. It's certainly the way I would do it but that's because I use open strings whenever possible.
 6. Tune your bass down a full step & use a capo for the half step & standard tuning stuff.
 7. There was somebody looking for one of these in the 'Items Wanted' section the other day.
 8.
Yup, that chorused fretless on Song For Sharon just wafts over the mind like a meandering summer breeze in a velvet hat
Max Bennett plays bass on 'Song for Sharon'.
 9. I don't know but I wish we hadn't bothered - I think the first one is much better.
 10. It's not so much a problem getting a guitar with a Floyd in tune, once it's tuned it'll stay there as the strings are clamped. The problem is that detuning certain strings on a guitar with a tremolo system will alter the tension on the bridge & put the whole guitar out of tune. The quality of Floyds on cheaper guitars isn't brilliant, though it varies. The main problem with licenced Floyds is that the pivot points are usually made from a softer metal so they wear out quickly & problems with the guitar returning to pitch can occur.
 11. If you're wanting to go for heavier sounds it might be worth looking at Blackstar amps.
 12. First of all - what's his budget?
 13. If you're going to be using different tunings I'd avoid getting a guitar with a Floyd Rose, or any other type of trem system to be honest.
 14.
Indeed. Apart from Bjorn Borg, no one ever looks good in a headband.
You're obviously forgetting Mark Knopfler.......
 15.
No one has mentioned an album that Jaco played on by Pat Metheny called Bright Size Life....
Visog mentioned it in post #47 actually. I'd agree that Bright Size Life is up there with his very best work, superb album.
 16.
Have you not heard how poor the sound of most digital radio stations are - especially when compared to their FM counterparts...?
Digital radio is bloody terrible.
 17.
Not on the Radio, but I once had an album on CD by LoFi Allstars and track 7 (i remember the track number but not the name) had a completely different synth section in the middle to every other version I've heard (Itunes version, everyone elses CD). My CD was identical in every way to all the others I've seen (not a special edition etc) but for some reason had a different version of that track on it... bizarre.
I've got an old CD copy of Cheap Trick's "At Budokan" album where the solos in "Ain't That a Shame" are totally different to every other version I've got or ever heard.
 18. 10cc played at Cardiff Castle in 1975. I didn't go (my elder brother & sister did) but we lived pretty close to the castle so we could easily hear them from our garden. A couple of the photos used in the documentary were from the Cardiff Castle gig.
 19.
Loved the bit about how they recorded the "choral" sounds on "Not In Love" (the only song I knew by them before watching the show). Three weeks of recording tape loops for each note, and then playing the mixer like a keyboard. Of course, now it would be trivial to do on a sampler, but incredible imagination to come up with that in the pre-sampler era since even a Mellotron wouldn't be able to do it (no long sustained notes due to the tapes only being a few centimetres long).
Mellotron tapes are a hell of a lot longer than a few centimetres.
 20. I admire the guy for carrying on at all after all he went through.
 21. Maybe we should send Geddy & Alex a link to the recent "Do you REALLY need a drummer?" thread.....
 22.
As I Have said a million times, you had to be there. Blue
Only a million times? It seems like a lot more than that.
 23. Buy a Japanese P bass & get a decent vintage style pickup for it. Buying a US fender of any age is a lottery as the quality control was/is so hit & miss.
 24.
This is a very good point - my SG bass would be no good for slap style. The other consideration is that a lot of the more readily available Gibson basses (SGs, T-birds) tend to have quite a dark sound. Obviously you can EQ the amp to counteract this, but you may find the guitar's basic tone lacks the combination of "clank" and "burp" that are normally blended on a Jazz bass for classic slap tones. (But then I'm a Gibson fan, and not a slap player, so take my advice with a healthy pinch of salt!)
This is exactly why I think a Gibson is not a great choice for slapping. If they were good choice for for slapping you'd see a lot more people using them that way.
 25.
Thanks you very much. It is very interesting short review. How about the Thunderbird? Has anybody tried to slap on it?
Thunderbirds have got very narrow necks, if you don't like your Jazz I can't see you liking a Thunderbird.
