I cannot listen to much of the 70s prog I loved for years anymore, it bores me to death. Six, however, is an album I still play regularly. It ticks all the Prog boxes for me but doesn't sound like it was made by a bunch of drippy upper middle class university boys. I would also class Magazine as a prog band.

Ghastly looking thing - the Epi Jack Casady is much nicer IMO.

To be honest I don't want to hear any instrument play a solo - certainly wouldn't bother me if I never heard another guitar solo again.

I played a gig in a run down old venue once. When we started playing we had a decent crowd but by the time we'd finished there was NO ONE THERE! Spooky.....

It's just personal preference. I always found the more options I had on a bass the more time I spent farting around with them & obsessing about my sound.

If it's got a passive pickup & the EQ is active then the bass should just sound like a normal passive bass when the active circuit is switched off. I would say however that more options does not necessarily make for a better bass, in my experience at least.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty certain that is one of Peggy's Rob Armstrong basses. He was definitely playing Rob Armstrong basses around this time. He's holding it in the back cover photo on Richard Thompsons "Hand of Kindness" album.

Always use LaBella Slappers on my Zons when I had them. Tried GHS Boomers on my Bogart when I had that & they were pretty good too.

Out of all of those I'd think the PA would be best.

There are some great guitar forums out there, but they tend to be based around particular builders. I've been a member of the Gretsch Discussion Pages & The Hamer Fanclub forum for years. They also have general interest & other guitars sections so they're not limited to just those particular makes. The specialist knowledge on these sites is astonishing.

That looks like a bad de-fret job to me. Also, I'd question whether that fingerboard is actually ebony - the open grain looks more like rosewood. I've had lots of basses with Ebony boards & never seen one with an open grain like that. I've owned quite a few Gretsch guitars & they use something called "Ebonised rosewood", which is basically rosewood stained to make it look more like ebony - that's what that fretboard looks like to me.
