Yes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them play bass! Good luck at least you'll have someone to jam with... That may seem like way off in the future, I now dream of doing this with my 23 yr old, but he's off with his own band now!

Very similar to what I gave my son... Plenty to get him started, if he loves it you can always get into mesh pads and better controllers later, or even an acoustic kit!
...and another one.
Hi, welcome, I'm not a lefty, but no doubt Bluejay will chime in later though!
-
Welcome aboard, you've come to the best place you can if you're just starting out. As Len said, play with loads of people, ask loads of questions and enjoy!
-
I'm even simpler than those two, but welcome, this really is a great place!
Guys, I hope there are no perceptions that the working bass punter is being snubbed in favour of glamorous, name bassists. I'm pretty confident that isn't the case. I'd suggest we can flick the bass around to the other punters once Lars has worked his incredible magic....
Absolutely not at all from my perspective. This and what Bluejay says... If you need help with any more "name" involvement, as said in my previous post, I might be able to assist...
The lack of frets is really disconcerting though. Who pulled those out?!!
Not sure these are a recent disappearance? I've not seen it in the flesh since the LBS, but I'm sure they were missing then too!!

I think a bit of balance is required here. I don't play dog and duck gigs, nor do I currently play stadiums, but usually to 2-300 people at a time, and I am (as are the others in the band!) very happy to stop the gig, tell the "story" of the bass and pass the collection boxes around. It would certainly help if the punters knew it was a cause started by BC but supported by a huge number of well known musicians. (I may be able to help there, particularly with some 60's/70's players...) So, having some "star" endorsements is a great thing and would be exceedingly helpful, but we do also need the bass to continue its fundraising journey....

I've just been looking at the Google map, and noticed that the whole of the west country is missing! I am in London on Monday/Tuesday this week, If anyone can let me have the baton bass I can use it for 2-3 gigs myself in the next couple of weeks in Devon and liaise with other west country players?

This FAQ pretty much covers it:- What are the differences between 220VAC, 230VAC and 240VAC Mains Supplies and what voltage equipment should I use? "Depending on the voltage sensitivity of the product and the variance from nominal of the actual supplied voltage, it may not be advisable to use a 220VAC specific device in the UK or a 240VAC specific device in Mainland Europe etc. For instance a 240VAC supply can rise to as high as 254.4VAC and still be within tolerance, but the maximum rated voltage for a 220VAC product is only 242VAC. A 220VAC supply can drop as low as 206.8 within tolerance but the minimum rated voltage for correct operation of a 240VAC product is 216VAC It may work perfectly well either way but it could be, technically, outside the specification of the equipment with obvious implications." Bearing in mind the sensitivity of switched power supplies, I think this explains it quite well!
Huh? DV are a UK company, with lots of UK shops, no? And Thomman will supply something which works in the EU, which is the same voltage as here (near enough), so you may just need a kettle lead with a UK plug? Or am I missing something?
Well, missing a couple of things actually! DV liquidated and were bought out a few months ago by German company, Music Store. Rather than using UK distributors (who aren't best pleased, not least because some of them lost a good chunk of money in the liquidation, and have now lost the trade altogether), they now source their kit from Germany, As do Thomann. On MB's website:-
POWER REQUIREMENT 100/120V; 230V; 240V 50/60Hz (Voltage is factory preset according to region of sale).

Markbass amps/combos are manufactured to be sold and used in the country of purchase, and they are factory preset to that country’s voltage. Due to homologation issues, the voltage may not be changed.
The UK distributor, MSL, are the only company who can supply 240v units into the UK. Both DV and Thomann can only supply 230v. Like many manufacturers, MB power amps use switched power supplies which are quite sensitive to voltage variation, (not an issue unique to MB but it is why they are so country specific), so "near enough" sadly doesn't cut it, as a difference of 10v before you even plug the thing in to the mains can cause problems, not least of which, if it does go bang, MSL cannot help you as a. it will not have been supplied by them, and b. with the wrong power supply it is effectively not approved for use in the UK by the manufacturer anyway. So, all you'll be able to do is return it to DV or Thomann, and they will have to send it back to Germany for repair/replacement, and you'll be without your amp for a while, unless DV have loan/replacement stock. All that said, all my MB kit is 240v, it is brilliant stuff, I love it and I'd need some pretty good persuading to change to something else, and is available from dozens of other UK dealers, who will look after you well. I do get your point about the power of the LM250 blackline at 8ohm, however its still bloody loud at 150w. I did a side by side test recently of the new JB players school combo (damn stupid name if you ask me!), against the CMD151, and it kept pace really well with very similar tonal character, and while definitely not "as loud" (but be fair, it is half the wattage!), but really much pokier than many others quoted at the same rating.....

Can't go wrong with the new markbass blackline 250, but do not buy from DV or Thomann or will not have a UK power supply.....!

just downloaded it... looks great! just what I need! -
No worries! Trust me, this is no Line 6 alternative! I've not yet seen the Bass multiamp, but I have seen the guitar one, and I think it gives the likes of Avid Eleven, AxeFX, Kempner a run for the money...
Anyone got any more info/videos/manuals on this ? Had a quick look - not too much out there.
I'll see what I can get from the guys at MSL...

Just spotted this thread. I will have one of these babies to play with in the next week or so, so I will be doing a mini review as soon as I can. I've been told by MSL that regarding power, the figures quoted above were pre-release. It is apparently officially as follows:- Mono version Same as LMIII 500W@4ohm / 300W@8ohm Stereo version Same as 2 x LMIII - 2x500W@4 ohm | 2x300W@8ohm, but can also be bridged to give 1000W@8ohm So that doesn't quite address all of us who have a pair of 8 ohm cabs, but then 2 x 300 watts in the MB world, as we all know, is still probably gonna be hoofin' I'm certainly looking forward to pissing my guitarist off by putting a cab on "his" side of the stage! I'll update when I've had a play!!

OK so has anyone seen it in the flesh yet? My friends at MSL say they have at last started shipping and they are going to lend me one to play with - Yay! I will do a mini review when I have managed to get my hands on it! From what I have found out so far its a modelling amp on a completely different level (as you would expect from MB) its apparently got the current Markbass heads modelled, including LMIII, Big Bang and TTE 500 plus quite a few other "well known" brands, along with modelled cab responses and different mics, so should be quite versatile. According to MSL it includes effects like Chorus, compressor, delay etc and the filter and envelope from the Markbass Supersynth in there, along with several more features than already published, with options for a 500w mono or stereo (which is said can be bridged to 1000 @ 8 ohms). Oh, and they say that (at last!) it has a mute switch! Can't wait to have a play, love to know what you think if you've seen one?
Yes, after discovering problems in practice, I went googling and found that Neutrik admit they might not work for active set-ups. It's fair enough. I just wondered if the PW breaker cables would be any better.
I use the PW cable with my lakland 55-02 active basses, and can completely reassure you they are completely silent (well with my basses anyway!). pop the little switch out on the jack then it is completely safe to unplug silently. I guess the difference is that with the PW, the lead is still plugged in when the switch is activated, so a circuit is theoretically there still, where with the Neutrik ones you simply pull the jack out from the bass.
-
I have several OBBM leads in my gig bag and in the studio, so cannot agree more to this recommendation. However... when not using wireless on stage I use a PW switched cable for my main lead. Mine is right angled at the bass end, so no confusion there about which end the switch is. I find the switch (which may be different on the straight plugs) very easy to use (pushed in towards the bass is ON), and absolutely great for "silent" muting (no pop or noise when you do it!) or swapping basses. In the same way as turning wireless transmitter off/on, and if nothing is coming out of my MB rig it is the first thing I check. My current lead is about 18 months old and still working absolutely fine, and, while I have had faults with PW leads before, they have a lifetime guarantee, so this isn't a problem 'cos you send it back and they send you a replacement, no questions asked (as long as the lead hasn't suffered obvious abuse!). Oh, and the PW switch has never let me down, where I have had two leads with Neutrik Silent jacks (the red ones with the brass sleeve, which pushes in when you plug in), and both silent jacks failed within a year, so were swapped for standard jacks (and you cannot use the neutrik ones as a mute switch. However, don't even get me started about the PW flanged plugs! In spite of the design change they will eventually mess up any socket you plug them into!!

That looks good and robust. I have one of these http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_miniamp_amp_800.htm Still no limiter, and maybe not as well built for the road, but has 2 distinct stereo input channels which can be switched to any of the 4 stereo headphone amps, each of which has 2 x 1/4in headphone outputs. Very versatile live and in the studio, as as such, very good value if you don't mind the brand!
Most band members are too spineless to sack people face to face, usually seems to be text or email these days so a proper meeting may just be to see how you are getting on with the set.
+1 i was sacked by email in January from a Kate Bush Tribute band. Great music but completely inexperienced arses. I was better off out!
Also, tell them you have joined a Bass Forum FCS..!! ... they will think you are uber keen
Don't you mean THE bass forum! with all the help and support you'll find here, you'll be amazing! Worry not, if its bad news, get some more bass-time under your belt and try with a new band, they probably don't deserve you!
Little bit of a stretch to your budget but has 16 mic pres, full recall and iPad/iPhone remote capabilities is a used Yamaha 01v96. I'm using a first generation 01v with my function band (we had a limited budget and I bagged it for under £200!) and whilst its possible to bodge wireless control with a laptop and a router in between, I do think the 12 mic pres will be limiting for bigger shows, so I'll be hiring in on anything large. Easy to navigate once you get a feel for where everything is though, and (as with all the decent digi stuff now) all your outboard is, err, onboard!
Unless being dumb, I cannot find an O1V96 (even on Yam website? I'm probably gonna get tol not to be foolish now!) with more than 12 pre's? if I could I would agree, about perfect...
Qu16... which is what you really want.
No ipad... Qu16 - Yes, if money was no object, that would be the one, but double what we can really afford at the moment... Heyho!
I really like the look of this, is it rackmountable?
Just had another good hard look... it IS rack mountable, but not enough channels for us, we need 14 mic pres and a stereo channel if were' gonna do this properly, but that puts us up to the 16:4:2, which is a heapload (for us at the moment) more money and definitely not rack mountable...
