Hi Guys, My 1985 Fretless Mk1 Wal was built for me as the first of a bookmatched pair, and was signed off by Ian Waller, with its beautiful and quite unusual Olive Ash facings, and an unlined Indian Ebony fingerboard. I chose the facings and the second set were stashed in a filing cabinet until the following year when the second, fretted, one was made. The neck is a "C" profile, rather than the more common "V", more details further down the thread. I always said I would never sell this beautiful bass, but sadly needs must to fund the build of its 5 string replacement. Having made the change to 5 strings I now find the change between 5 and 4 difficult when playing live, so she must go When I bought it I was touring extensively so I upgraded the standard Hiscox type case to the fitted flightcase (which is so solid it could probably withstand a nuclear explosion!), which will be included, and the bass weighs 10.2lb I am perfectly happy to ship anywhere at your expense, or meet oyu somewere for a handover and I am open to sensible offers around £2700. Lakland Hollowbody fretless Trade for fretted version!!
MoJoKe replied to sshorepunk's topic in Basses For Sale
Glad that fretless neck is staying fretless. I didn't know it was so easy to get another Lakland neck ... I think my fretted 55-94 might soon be going in the other direction Andy
I have 2 x 55-02's, one STD ash/maple neck the other a sunburst DLX with a rosewood neck. I pondered on the fretless migration for the DLX as the std ash is lighter and has the better feel of the two. My fretless is a Wal Mk1 and while I always said I wouldn't part with it for anything in the world, it never gets used these days as the transition between Wal and Lakland is too great for me to swap live comfortably, and I now totally play 5 strings, so am now going to sell the Wal to fund a 5 string build. I'd be keen to hear how you get on if you do this. The only comment I would make is that they only do a "lined" fretless neck for the 55-02, which didn't sit too well with me as I prefer the look of an unmarked and unlined neck with just side dots. It may be different with your 55-94 as these are generally more custom in their options... -
Lakland Hollowbody fretless Trade for fretted version!!
MoJoKe replied to sshorepunk's topic in Basses For Sale
Lakland have just quoted me $400 for a 55-02 fretless neck... thats about £256 plus shipping at today's exchange rate... it wasn't gonna cost that much less than this for Hugh Manson to de-fret the current neck, and doing it this way I will have some choices. I can't imagine a fretted neck would be any more, as the fretless neck is lined anyway... -

OK, having further thoughts about this... I also have a Wal Mk1 Fretless which I rarely use, as I find the trasition between 5 to 4 and back quite a challenge when playing live. I may trade the Wal another time, but I would be keen to explore the possibility of trading this 55-02 for a 5 string fretless, Lakland (55-02) ideally, but must have 35" scale, so I have a fretless/fretted pair. Much more useful! Let me know what you've got! -

Trade my Lakland 55-02 DLX for your JO/DJ5 or 55-02 Fretless
Does this have the Lakland or Bart PUPs and pre?
Hi Rumble, This is a completely standard 55-02 DLX dated August 09 from the serial number, it has lakland pickups.. I bought it here in January from one of our chums, its immaculate and it still has the plastic on the rear plate. My two basses are so similar in sound/feel, I just think I need something different, and I prefer the look/feel of the stadard one, which also has lakland pup/pre -

I am really loving my laklands, but have 2 x 55-02s, and of the two prefer the maple neck feel, but otherwise the two feel/do the same so is there anyone out there who would like to trade my absolutely mint 55-02 DLX in three tone sunburst/rosewood neck for any (equally mint) Jazz 5ver? I've been using a CMD 151 for a couple of years now, on its own its great in pubs, and I use it with a 104HR when doing bigger gigs. Its even small enough to practice with. Absolutely hoofin sound, plenty of power and sounds lovely with pretty much any bass I play through it. couldn't recommend more highly! I have also been known to unplug the internal speaker and just use with the 104... really versatile rig!

What's like a 5 string Stingray without being one....??
MoJoKe replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Bass Guitars
Depends how close you want it? The Lakland 55-02 is nice but they don't sound as Ray as you would think.
True, but better than most basses that aren't a Ray , and when you want Jazz or a whole bunch of other sounds they're all there too! Because you can split the bridge pickup its incredibly versatile -
Lakland 55-02 has 19mm spacing, like you I can't really get on with narrow spacing. Give the Lakland a shot.
+100 or so... I used to play Spectors, but didn't like the spacing and they didn't sound at all like a fender or MM, which was what I needed. I tried a 55-02 in a shop a few years ago and dismissed them as the thing had appalling action, but tried another in January, and have now replaced 2 x spectors with 2 x 55-02's, one sunburst DLX and one Standard in ash. They are lovely basses, give them a go! -
Is it just me or does your Lakland eat batteries for a pastime....?
MoJoKe replied to MoJoKe's topic in Bass Guitars
OK resolved by Mansons. The contacts on the jack were touching the screening paint on the inside of the cavity... very slow drain, but nonetheless a problem.... thanks for all thoughts and help -
So you're trying to offload a mk1?
Was this to me? Not sure as not quoted... If it was, then no! not necessarily... I had two bookmatched Wals made to order in the 80's. I stupidly sold the fretted one in a time of financial desperation in the early 90s, and regretted ever since. I swore I would never sell the Fretless, but as I now only seem to play 5 strings it spends its life in a case. If there was anyone out there with a 5 string fretless who would like to trade I would love to discuss... If I had to sell it to buy a 5 string, I would only advertise and sell this after I had bought!

I missed this... Its still on iPlayer until midnight tonight

Copies can be so different. I know a guy in bristol who will make you a new one if you can accurately trace it (including screwholes...). he did a new one for my JV precision.

anyone out there wanna discuss a Mk1 fretless trade for a mk2 or 3 5 string fretless. Beautiful olive ash facings, was built for me in '86, beautiful condition, pics on request?
