This is turning into a MM5 love-in See if you can try a 5 string out for a while and see how you get on. Don't worry too much about the extra string, just dive in!!
Some of us don't play MM! I started playing bass in 1976, first "proper" bass (after the obligatory Westone Thunder 1a!) was a JV '57 Precision which I still have. When turned pro on the mid '80s I bought 2 x Wal Mach 1's, the fretless I still have. I bought my first 5 sting, an Ibanez Ergodyne EDA 905 (yes, an odd first choice, but it was cheap!), about 5 years ago, and took to 5 strings like a duck to water! I didn't have any problems with string spacing or neck width, love the really low tones and being able to play lower scales further up the neck. so much so that I find playing a 4 string a bit odd now, as if something important is missing! My poor old Wal and Precision spend far too much time in their cases! I currently have three 5'ers. As my main gigging basses I've been using a Spector rebop and a Euro LX5, both in cherry. I listed the rebop in the marketplace, but would consider parting with either now, as my third one is a cheapie passive Squeir Jazz, which I have now been using mostly. Odd but it just feels "right", and feeling now I should be playing Jazz basses, so currently on the lookout for anything interesting, like Fender, G&L, Lakland, Sadowsky, etc.. I'm near exeter, if you want to have a play on a few things give me a shout if you're not too far into Cornwall (I think your profile says?)...
I bought this with the tuners already in place. They are highly functional but they are also quite ungainly. That said they have never bothered me enough to change them. This is a spanking deal for the money but i'm not really in this for profit, just to get enough to pick up another bass I've put a dep on. I would rather sell on here because I've got some good deals and dealt with some nice people here but it'll have to go fleabay way next week if it doesn't shift. Tx
I have a rebop and a euro LX 5, and have started hankering for a jazz sound again. Does the US spector have a better range of tone, and would it help me to get there? I really do enjoy playing them, but the sound is wrong!

Hi Guys, This Rebop has been my gigging spare and occasional studio use for a couple of years. It is is in Black Cherry (or maybe plum! not sure!), in great condition as has spent most of its last two years in its ritter gig bag. I do love this bass, but I also have a Euro LX in the same colour, and I'm all GASed up, I really want to buy a Jazz bass, so sadly need to sell her! More here:- http://www.2things.co.uk/index.php?option=...4&Itemid=14 It's made of Solid European Alder, with the Original NS-Curved Body™, with a Bolt-On Neck with Pearl Dot Inlays with the Spector Deep Pocket Neck Insert™ (Like the Euro LX rather than the Legend!), and black hardware. The Pickups are EMG-HZ, and it has active EQ with a 9v (Aguilar OBP-1, I think!) preamp. This is such a nice bass! The neck feels lovely, the action is very low, so is very playable, has just had a setup and a brand new set of Elixir Superlight Nanoweb strings (I don't know why anyone would want to use anything else! Yes, they are expensive, but sound really bright and punchy and last at least 4 times longer than anything else!). It is in great condition, with a few small marks and slight buckle rash on the back, but no more than you'd expect for its age. The body is still as shiny as a new one (looks really cool, like a plum coloured jelly bean!). The Good - Lovely sound, has a much more controllable tone than the TonePump, but if you you would like it, I have a TonePump preamp which I will include in the sale (taken out of my Euro LX). Also, the previous owner put a battery compartment in the back panel of the bass, which makes battery replacement much simpler. The Bad - Well, not "bad" at all really, but the previous owner also changed the knobs from the original ones. I also have a set of the original black ones, which again I will include if you would rather change them back! The Ugly - Nothing really ugly, just two small body dings, as shown with arrows in the pics, but the neck is lovely, she plays beautifully, and looks great! The sale includes an ABS shell case, which is none too pretty, but completely functional! I really don't like shipping basses, so would much prefer you to collect, I'm near Exeter (or I can meet you somewhere on, or south of the M4, as far as East Chichester, by prior arrangement and a small fuel consideration). If shipping is the only option, then for £30 I will pack very carefully in her plastic hard case and I'll send by carrier. I will also ship overseas at your expense. I am after a Jazz style fiver, either a MIA Deluxe, Lakland, Sei, Sandberg or something of similar sound/quality with a nice narrow neck, and i would be very happy to look at a PX for the right bass...
Duh it's a Zulkefjhjhjhjhgj.
I'm tempted to shelve the idea of ordering a new Wal and buy this instead... Surely the decimal place is at least 1 if not 2 digits too far to the left!!??

Anyone know what this is...? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-String-Bass-/22071...=item33635e39a9 Not about to buy it, just intrigued!!
The Spector style of jack plug tends to be the type you need to replace rather than repair methinks.
Hmm yes, you can't really get "into" it can you! Cleaned it, but to no avail!, will try contacting Spector, thanks for all your help, guys!! PS. used the rebop instead, the gig was stunning! We were "supporting" the "Abba Girls", all went really well!

I bought a used LX5 on the 'bay a couple of months ago, and I love it, BUT, it has a really noisy Jack socket which I don't seem to be able to cure however much I fiddle! Correct me if I'm wrong, but the tonepump preamp uses the middle sleeve contact to switch on and off, and if the Jack plug is wiggled even slightly it makes a loud popping noise. Anyone got any quick thoughts, as I have an important gig tonight, and though I could relegate to my spare and use my Rebop 5, I would rather not! Thanks!

Well, I spotted the original post on Friday, and refrained from posting until things had settled a bit. I trust that, with as many loyal (pain in the ass) members here, if this ever came to pass, then we would be offered the opportunity to buy a share (check your paypal for downpayment), and the result would be worth well more than £1500 for the brotherhood herein....

OK, I submitted this post, then went back to check others, and problem had gone away...... (....plays "Twilight Zone" music...!!)

I have listed a couple of Basses for sale, and now want to tell people in the topic title I am now open to offers, but when I click the edit button, where it normally gives quick or full edit options, in my case it is blank. Can someone help please!!

I used to use trace elliot until, very poor needed to sell, and while I had no amp I used to borrow one of these from a friend, and used to keep asking if he would sell it to me (he wasn't a bassist BTW, he ran a PA and Disco company!), which he never would! I could not recommend it highly enough. Loud, tight, controllable sound, it is definitely worth more than £90, so an absolute steal if anyone is after a good amp, well powerfull enough for rehearsals and pub gigs...

Will a 62 Precision scratchplate fit a Squier JV P-bass

OK, I know money is tight out there, but I am quite surprised that I still have both hands!!! I know I'm in danger of getting a kicking here, but quite a few places where you may buy these won't even set them up for your princely £190 (or more, inc carriage)!! Here's one which is properly set up, fitted with schaller straplocks, premium strings, plays beautifully, and but for a tiny mark on the back of the top horn you wouldn't know it wasn't brand new, for just £120, lovingly hand delivered!! It doesn't get better than that!! This bass is absolutely perfect for a new player to five strings, or even a completely new player to bass (again possibly contentious!), and even perfect-er(!) as good quality backup bass. Someone must know somebody starting out, or moving to 5 strings who this would be ideal for! Sadly it'll end up on the 'bay at the weekend if no interest!

Will a 62 Precision scratchplate fit a Squier JV P-bass
MoJoKe replied to Twigman's topic in Repairs and Technical
It might fit, but it's more than likely that it won't be perfect. To be honest, for about the same amount you could get a custom one done that would be a perfect fit. Try emailing WD, I usually go through them for a scratchplate and they're very helpful.
Definitive answer here, as I had the same problem with my '57 P Bass... Sorry, no it won't!! Subtle but different shape, and none of the screw holes will line up. Don't waste your money trying out for yourself, go find a luthier with the scratchplate and he'll stencil a template and get a new one made! It was a while back. but I think I paid about £40, for the guitar tech at what used to be Sound Control in Bristol, to do mine. Hope that helps!
