My first video blog... Maruszczyk Jake P-bass review
bubinga5 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Great video Michael. Really enjoyed your explanation and enthusiasm. My Elwood 5 is fantastic. . Everything about it is good. With the Bartolini,s it's just epic. -
I'm thinking of this. Or maybe something cheaper. http://www.gear4music.com/Recording-and-Computers/Focusrite-Saffire-Pro-24-Firewire-and-Thunderbolt-Audio-Interface/B6Q

Ok thanks BbRX. so would I better off getting a firewire or thunderbolt.? Also do all these interfaces have there own comparable DAW,s.?
The problem with USB on the Mac is that the bus structure is quite convoluted, so that your USB interface may be sharing the bus with other devices without you knowing it. And just because you have multiple USB ports doesn't mean that they are separate buses. From the photo it looks as though you have the same MacBook Pro as me - (13" Mid 2012). Looking at the bus structure in the System Profile there are 2 separate USB buses - but one already has the keyboard, trackpad, IR receiver and Bluetooth controller attached to it, and the other has the built-in FaceTime camera. Also despite the fact that the Mac supports USB3 on one of the buses, this is ultimately connected via an internal USB hub to one of the main USB2 buses, so despite supporting the USB3 protocol the speed will be throttled back to USB2. And every other USB peripheral that you add will be competing for USB2 bandwidth. That's why FireWire and Thunderbolt are always better options on the Mac.
Ok BRX i know about music theory and bass guitar but that just went totally over my head.

Ok it looks like I have Thunderbolt, Fire wire and 2 x USB.
-
You know I'm not sure im my Mac has firewire or not. My older Mac did. . And what do you mean its obsolete?. I've always used the USB. I do wonder why the presonus was so hit and miss.
-
I have a presonus audio box and it is a pain in the arse. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the Mac recognising it but I've had enough of it. Can anyone recommend me a good interface for the Mac Pro. All I want to do is make some youtube playa long,s/vids. Any ideas.?

Yamaha TRB II 5 String Bass MIJ 1998 £400 *SOLD*

The bottom line is as always with talk about instruments. There are so many variables when it comes to any opinion on a bass it's tone, or its playability. I don't like Fender 5 string Jazz basses. They to me have a floppy B string. But, put some tight strings on it and really good quality pickups on it. Hey presto. There you have a great B. Nothing to do with scale length or the string through the body nonsense.
Don't think an 800 quid bass can be classed as cheap.
I was referring to BRX,s post. You can go even cheaper. I bought a Yamaha TRB 6 for 500 and the B string was epic.

Early days - what should I be aiming for?
Definitely listening to lots of music picking out the basslines and trying to copy them. It trains your ear somewhat to recognise the notes. Also learn the fretboard.....by this i mean where all the notes are as it helps when you move on to scales and modes.
what number 6 said. -
For me the perfect JazzFunk record. It is so bad ass. Amazing flute and sax player. This track is so very funky. Great horn section, great understated bass playing. Tips on the best side of early jazz funk for me. Great guitar solo.Great drumming. http://youtu.be/wrsr5WKstos

Ok I've plugged the bass straight into input 1 on the back of the Korg. It works. I do know there is a problem with the input jack on the Aggie.Very scratchy. No the bass volume is up. I get the feeling there is something not right with amp. Stoo, when you say the amp is not giving enough signal makes me think. There is a definate drop in signal because of the scratchy input jack. It also effects the gain knob which is also scratchy and makes alot of unwanted noise when touched.
Unfortunately IME there are no cheap and good 5-string basses. There's more to making a good 5-string than simply widening the neck and pickups and adding an extra bridge saddle and machine head, which is all the cheaper end of the market does. Even if they are currently out of your price range, go to a specialist bass shop such as Bass Direct, Bass Gear or The Gallery and try some around the £2k mark. Then you'll see why you've been unsatisfied with the budget end of the market.
I couldn't disagree more. A Lakland 5502 has one of the best B strings I've ever heard. Ive played Dingwall,s, Pensa,s, Sadowsky,s. You can get 55s for what... £800. The graphite neck helps, the 35 scale helps, the USA electronics help of course. But to say you can't get a great B string on a budget for me just isn't true. Lakland 55s are world renowned for there b string. What about an SR5.? Amazing B strings.!! My Maruszczyk has an amazingly focused B string. No flop, sounds really tight Both of those are 34". Dont mean to be rude but an I'll informed post BigRed.

I'm not sure what you mean on your first point. Both instrument cables are fine. Checked both and I can play bass with them. The tuner out should be fine as I've never used it. I'm very confused. The seller is a BC member so maybe he could shed some light.
-
Ok the issue might be I'm a dumb ass. But I can't seem to get the tuner working. Ok I'm plugging from my bass in to the amp. Then from the tuner out, on the amp in to the input 1,on the back on the Korg. Turn both on. Nothing. The only time it works is when I turn up but obviously that's the mic. I have the Korg on bass and on input 1 on the front ..Am I doing something wrong. ?
Err. . . . do untwist the strings.
sorry the windings

This is good tip fro a master builder. Don't untwist the windings. http://youtu.be/cLcwYNHDnPY

I think some people are missing the point with a low B strings tone or tightness sometimes. Electronics and pickups have a great deal to do with it, and how a low B string responds. It's not all to do with the way the string behaves or its tension. It's how that vibration is picked up and handled electronicaly. Crap pickups or preamp can make a thight b string sound mushy, floppy. I've had floppy B string,s that sounded amazing. Ie a Fender Jazz 5 mim with a glockenspiel. Great sounding b string. On the other hand I've had a Fender 5 mim with DR low riders that sounded not so good. To many variables me says. A physically floppy B string can sound amazing, with a good preamp. Pickups. some technique adjustment may be needed. I think there is some confusion between the feel of a string and it's actual tone that can be achieved.
