When he played for Chaka Khan on Naughty, He insisted on playing the same part over and over, until he thought he got it right. To go as far as stopping for hours to rehearse the bass part n his own, until he got to where it sounded good. Im not sure he's correct in some ways, as Stevie Wonder at that time was playing some epic bass synth lines, that could easily match anything he was or has played. Everything on full, then EQ from your amp. Whats the point in making it sound like a P Bass. ?

I have a great Maruszczyk 5 string Jazz Bass. I wasn't very happy with the Delano pickups, or the Sonar 2 preamp. Then i put a set of DR Fat Beams on this bass. Good lord above!!!. This instrument is now an absolute beast. i play a 45 -125 set and it is hard to describe the tone through the Aguilar. Its totally changed the instrument. Im not sure what strings were on before, but the preamp and pups sounded quite lack luster. I think the heavier gauge counts. I am only playing the bass passive, so I'm not sure what the Delano sonar 2 preamp sounds like until i can get a 9v battery tomorrow. but passive, it sounds pretty fat, just a great sounding jazz bass. Lots of growl, pretty much a Marcus Miller tone. Its easy to underestimate what a fresh set of strings can do. But I've had this experience with DR strings before. they are just superb. I know the making behind these particular strings that makes them so so special, but i won't bore you with it. IMO the best electric bass strings ever made. Compression wound, round core, stainless steel greatness. I swear by these strings. and there getting cheaper as Marcus has gone to Dunlop. the bass in question.

Anyone remember it.? This is such a great great great….. Billy Cobham record from Focused. Its so very funky. There is no point in mentioning Billy Cobham's sublime drumming, as many know what he's about. The groove is as tight as can be. I think it makes a difference with the tension/tone and the way the string behaves or lasts. Feel free to disagree. while putting on my new 5 string set, i noticed as i was winding on the tuner peg the string would try to naturally twist. So. When winding and the string is loose (when the string gets tighter) hold as hard as you can on the string by the nut and let the ball end fall/twist into its natural position in the bridge ( ooh you filthy buggers). THen pull the ball end in to the bridge and tighten up. Im pretty sure if you don't do this it has a negative affect on the winding of the string. Thus effecting the natural position of the windings of the string. wether its unwinding or winding too tight I'm not sure. Just a thought.

I owned a Custom Shop LTD Edition 1970 jazz bass, Only 100 made. Natural pearl block's, binding etc. and I've got to say It was quite a fantastic instrument. Didn't have the oomph that i wanted, but it was really nicely made in that old school Fender way. it wasn't perfect but thats what i liked about it. Was very consistent across the stings and the harmonics rang out. I was playing it in cheltenham in this pic. Was quite light as i remember. Certainly did have a little growl, but i do have my string on the low side. Would i get another Fender. MIJ,CIJ,Standard USA. Yep. Custom Shop hell no. There are basses like the one i own now, including many other's the list is endless that blow them away imo.

Yeah it is KP, very clever no doubt. Its probably my dislike of theatre, I'm not a fan a musical's, or Opera and I rarely concentrate on lyrics in music. (there are exceptions of course). My wife is always prompting me as to what the song is about, and I'm like, oh yeah that really opens up a different dimension to the song. but i get pretty absorbed in the sounds of the instruments and the rhythm . I've always been the same. My Dad was the musical director for the Hastings Orchestra in New Zealand and i listened to classical since i was 3 to 10 years old. maybe thats what programmed me. Then instrumental Jazz and Funk came along. Then again i love Gene Kelly and his singing dancing. . work that out. I prefer this. (yes again i post this).
