1. My long lost Sei is hands down the best bas I've ever played. It just felt very special. This seems to me like a very unique instrument and a personal spec selection.
2. you don't see many of Chris's basses up for sale. i think I've seen 2 in 8 years on Bass Chat. beautiful
3. I really dont like EMG's or the Delano's. to hifi for my ears. The EMG actives are just wooahh.way too much. The only other pickups I've liked are Fender custom shop in a passive jazz or Nordy soap bars. Or dimarzio make cracking pickups, especially the Area J
4. They are a pickup that is not super bright, like i said there soooo many different windings that Bartolini offer. they will make what you want. But they are really nice pickups imo. I would take Bartolini's over any other pickup, including Lindy Fralin's. it may sound odd but a factor for me is the actual plastic casing. nice rounded edges on Bartolini Pups.. I had some Nordy HC's in a jazz, and resting my thumb on the sharp edges of the plastic wasn't very comfortable.
5.
Do you mean the extra long ones, full-on 5 stringers? I just happen to have a pair in the Projects Box which came out of my Overwater J5 fretless. Beautiful things, not overly dark at all, but I decided I wanted a load of extra attack and graunch so swapped out to EMG j5s. If you fancy them, let's talk!
pm'd
6. My sister had this on in the car today and it is awesome. The bassist is Hubert Eaves on an MTD i believe. ,The whole album is fantastic. Ive had the album for years but it really hit me today how good it is.. its just cracking walking bass at the start, then his laid back groove throughout is very cool. 7. i so dig Leland. He is a proper bass player. his grooves are amazing.
8.
It's really funny, I'm always incredibly impressed with Wooten's playing, precision and his technical mastery of the instrument but I've still never heard any of his solo playing that's really moved me on an emotional level (unlike, say, Abe Laboriel's solo stuff which shares a lot of similar elements). One of those players I've tried hard to like/love but just never managed to. I always kinda feel like I ought to but it just never happens.
thats why i love the second vid, its so musical what he plays. imo
9. Im aware that a lot of players don't like the Bartlolini's smooth darkish ( depending on the winding) tone they give. But i really would like a 5 string set. I had a 5 string set on the Sei Jazz and they were so great. Anyone else like Barts on a Jazz Bass. and do you like Delano's.?
10.
I don't like the Aguilar's at all. Better than stock US jazz pickups but way behind many others Ive tried They sound generic and soft to me Get Fralins, best Ive ever tried bar none!
yep Lindy Fralins are incredible pickups. Very expensive also.
11. Pino's fretless playing on Go West's. Call Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIdzGh01QIA
12. I'm going to get told off for this but both the Delano sonar 2 and 5 string Delano pickups are for trade, or sale. i want some Bartlolini's. bollocking inbound.
13. its a money making exercise. Some great instruments came from said bass players. but the brand's are monopolising on the fame of certain players. Thats not a bad thing the Roscoe Beck is such a great bass, as is the Marcus Miller 5. i don't want to offend anyone about the sig basses that should never be played. One word though. Flea
14.
I loved the slap sound from Marcus back in the early days (this track). More throaty, maybe before he had the preamp fitted? Similar sound on the Dave Grusin album 'Mountain Dance', which was recorded about a year earlier. I find that musical ideas just pour out of MM. His Fretless solos are very musical and lyrical.
He had a Stars preamp fitted in his Jazz at that time. Just before he met Roger Sadowsky and then Roger recommended a Bartolini.
15. This is just mind bending groove when the drummer starts playing.. detailed bass playing from a true master of our instrument. You know what though i still prefer Marcus Miller or Meshell ndegeocello. BUT when he plays as well as this my ears are open. his 2 part playing on Earth Wind and Fire's Cant Hide Love. its just fabulous.!! some of the best bass playing I've ever heard. The great thing about Victor Wooten. his playing is just flawless, there are no little mistakes.. you couldn't get a rizla paper between his groove. He reminds me of Stephane Grappelli a lot, he was another stickler for absolute perfection in his playing.
16. i love them. i will be listening JT.
17.
Really like the bass on this - do you know who's playing?
Its Pino Palladino.
18. Yep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4lCTVFTXCw
19. First off i think the guy is a genius. What a singer/ organist. Not in the same POP way that Prince is/was, but a very special musician all the same. Always has great musicians playing for him. Well Pino for one.i just think the music he makes is fantastic. Its all about the music. Ive loved this guys music since Brown Sugar when i was in my 20's. i can't say he doesn't remind me of Prince and got his influence from him.
20. A funky record from Down to the Bone with Julian Crampton on bass that stays on the same groove for a while, but when the chords change i think its brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VtQ962tH20
21.
Hmmm. My favourite music style is funk. These guys can lay down a tight groove, that's for sure. However, for me, I was waiting for the piece to develop a bit more - to go somewhere else and come back again. Maybe I'm too used to listening to and playing pop-funk, but I found myself listening for the hook in that video. After a while, I found myself thinking: - Yes, that great. What happens now, then? Lots of Meters in there.
i don't think that groove is about chord changes etc. its just a groove. i used to to think that, about SOME funk, not all. but then my taste from that specific Funk evolved into Soul Funk and Jazz. like Incognito. This groove is unstoppable with some awesome changes. Fantastic bass playing. Maybe too future funk groove for some, but imo it still has groove. 22. She is such a fantastic musician. She's such a great all rounder. Possibly the best groove bassist, great pianist, her lyrics are profound. but i miss her early music. Plantation Lulabiies, and my favourite, Peace Beyond Passion. that album is in my top 5. its just incredibly well produced, played. just superb. I don't mind her later stuff, but i guess she evolving. maybe i should too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxnsl4E8ea4
