The best bass playing you have ever heard.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Randy HOPE Taylor on Incognito's Magnetic Ocean. His playing through the record is great, the details like little double stops and general groove perfection. but his solo at 2.45 is just……!!! -
thanks guys, Its a set of DR Marcus Miller 5 i was after. From Amazon there bloody £50 with postage. Jesus.!!!! String Busters are cheaper me thinks.
I think that the 'collectibility' of vintage instruments is more down to sentimentality and myth than anything else. The main brand which does well in the vintage market is Fender, which is probably because they are the biggest company in the market, they're the most copied company in the market, they've been around for longest, and people remember wanting Fenders when they were kids because their hero played one. There is also the perception that Fenders of various periods are better (pre-CBS, etc), but because all of the pre-CBS models have been snatched up and now command astronomical prices, people moved onto the later basses which are now all more expensive, and now even the 80s stuff is starting to rise in price, which is funny because as far as I was aware, everyone seems to think that the 80s stuff is crap. Because of this, the market is huge, demand is huge, and sellers can ramp up the prices because people will pay them. Warwick doesn't have any of that stuff. They've only been around since the 80s, no one makes copies of their instruments, and the only people whose childhood heroes played them are people in their mid to late 20s because of the Nu Metal wave of the early 2000s (I'm one of them). The number of buyers for Warwicks is tiny compared to Fender, so if people try to sell Warwicks for high prices they just don't sell, because the demand and the mythology just isn't there.
good point well said.

There are a few albums i have heard different versions of this from Frank. He sounds like Donny Hathaway to me. He plays the piano and vocals on this. check out the bass playing on that 5 string. its so tasteful.what an excellent bassist this guy is.
Those layers sound like something done on a looper. Nice groove though. I think League's enthusiasm is genuine, he just really digs doing that stuff. He always comes across as being incredibly humble too. Often the case with true musicians, especially in jazz circles, I've found.
yep.

Like i say. Thanks for any info.

Do you notice a lot of difference in your string gauge and tone.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I always thought the heavier the gauge the richer the tone, but also takes more effort for ones attack on the strings. -
The Elwood 5's will keep up easily with Sadowsky Metros. My Elwood 5 is so playable. They leave Fender in there wake.

The best bass playing you have ever heard.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
this is panty wetting phenomenal finger style from the master on a 5 string. his slap is obviously fantastic but i reckon his finger style is better. When he plays he really plays. He plays a stock Miller Fender 5 string on this record. he told me that when i met him. yes that is my claim to fame. -
I dug into this ages ago and it turns out it was some little known, London based producer that played on the album version of Space Cowboy. I'll see if I can find the relevant link again!
if you can dig any deeper than i dug 40hz your a better digger than thee. could it possibly be that its not even an electric bass being played.? -
Just a short question. Just asking what you think of the Delano sound. i have a Delano Sonar 2 and a set of j5 Delano pickups?

Johann Asmundsson imo is such a fantastic bass player. Ive always love Mezzoforte. I bought the live in Reykjvik DVD and i was blown away. great playing on that Sadowsky, but when the drummer plays his bass with his sticks. i was like.! well thats something i dont see in a band very often. Great tasteful slap playing the man anyways. Check his solo slap playing @ 2.20 followed by the great drummer Gunni Briem playing his bass on the sticks. Check out also a certain percussionist from early Incognito.

Its a Hamer Impact, from 92 i believe. apart from a alembic Rouge 5 i saw once, this my favourite bass of all time. You don't see many Hamer's about these days. There were 12 of these specific instruments made with the EMG soap bars.they are so rare and thats why i want one. Rare as a rocking horses fart. It must sound epic. they must cost a fortune. That flame maple all the way through the body to the neck. what a bass.
Ernie McKone was one of the original guys playing on the old Acid Jazz recordings, playing with a group called Push, he was also usually the bass player with the band credited as 'Acid Jazz Alliance' on those old compilations they used to produce. More famously he was also the guy on all the Galliano releases. It doesn't sound like him to be honest - he usually found himself a really deep pocket with a little 1- or 2-bar ostinato and mostly stuck to it. I always figured he had a background more in reggae music from the way he played, he was a lovely groover though, and could bust it out when required if you've ever seen Galliano live.
You beat me too it. Austin. Push have always been a favourite of mine. I saw Galliano with Omar and Ernie at the Jazz Cafe playing this record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx0mc5fa15k -

This is near bass playing perfection for me. Willie Weeks on Donny's classic Little Ghetto Boy. talk about dancing around the chords, his playing is just wonderful on that P Bass. he reminds me of James Jamerson. possibly where he got his style and influence from.
Have I misread the OP's post? I thought it was Zender playing right through on Return of the Space Cowboy. ?
Stuart didn't play on this version. I still to this day am not sure who did. I would love to know. I thought it was Randy HOPE Taylor but I've been told its not by Incognito's Bluey. There is a thing in my mind thinks its an incredible player called Ernie McKown. he played bass on this incognito record. I've just got a hunch it was him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJKQS_p9q5k -
At last after many years I'm going to see The brand New heavies. Me and my sister have Tony Momrelle from Incognito and the incredible Rita Satch at lunch time in Cheltenham. then the Motherf***in Brand New Heavies at 8.00 pm. with 13 friends who love them as much as i do. The great music from Jan K, Simon, Andrew etc just kept coming and coming. I'm amazed they started the group in the early 80's.?!!
