1. IMO this is one of best grooves I've ever heard. Donal Fagen, Tom Barney again. Walter B. When i play with any musicians i want them to be as tight as these guys. its a big ask but if you don't ask, you won't get it. always best to look further than what you can play and push yourself imo. what i mean is timing, nuance, I'm obsessed with timing and playing around the beat, in an honest way and not a flamboyant one. this is just an excellent groove. 2.
I like this clip. Freddie Washington's GOT IT.
Yep that was fantastic.
3. Can you get notifications for replied posts you might get from BassChat through email or any other way? you'd think i might know this wouldn't you being a member since Bass world back in 2006
4.
This I think it came from you or one of your threads. I love a lot of bassists but I've yet to find a performance to excite me as much as this
Ive never heard this record. its a cracker by the way. That is Meshel Ndegeocello on bass. if there is anyones bass playing i can recognise its Meshell's.
5.
S Zender and RH Taylor certainly excited me as bass players at that time, I believe they played in ways that had not been done before. I remember constantly listening to "blow my mind" so simple yet fresh. Whilst I'm in awe of M Miller and his peers, I lose the emotional attachment to their music when it becomes about the bass over the style where someone like Zender plays the most beautiful and groovy lines that support the song rather than sit on top of it (if that makes any sense)
Im all for bass players that play for the record. Why wouldn't they.? ok its nice to have a bit of flash. sometime they do but i prefer guys like Pino,. for me, perfection when it comes to understated groove bass playing. If he ever played on Space Cowboy i think my headphones would explode. I still think Marcus Miller when he plays finger style is just one of the best bass players alive. But he is not Pino Palladino.
6.
Snarky bass player is a good player, no doubt; but his gurning iritates me. I've seen the Puppies live a couple of times and both were great gigs; but ML just comes across as an arrogant know-it-all, who's just a bit too pleased with himself. He's worked hard to get there and I take my hat off to him for that and his playing;.....but please, lose the attitude!
Ive seen them live twice. and he didn't come across like that at all for me. I'm not saying he can't be Bassnut. I saw them at the cheltenham jazz fest and after they all went to a bar across the road and i got talking to him.he even bought me a drink, he came across as very level headed to me. believe me i can recognise some unbalance in a personality when i meet them .. i found Cory Henry, who was the organ player that night quite arrogant. but I was thinking, you just don't know what is going on in these peoples lives. He might of been knackered, pissed. who knows.
7. I have heard my favourite bass players like Meshell, Randy Taylor, Mr Miller, but I've got to be honest i adore this persons bass playing. its so musical and dynamic. Of course i don't know who the f*** he or she is but, damn they lay down some fantastic bass. I love Zender's playing but this person is in a different league imo.. Wonderful wandering playing I've only seen in Willie Weeks . Whats your favourite ever playing on a record.?
8.
Stop bickering, everyone!! Start posting some good grooves.
yep there is no point. Talking of Michael and Snarky. yep its been posted before . micheal's solo bass playing is superb. but Shaun Martin's playing near the end is quite something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RluNrXjP3zY its Epic Snarky Puppy.
9. Blue i respect your opinion,.but great jamming/music doesn't revolve around money or business. music is more pleasurable when you... 1. enjoy music 2. forget its a business no pressure. just play what you want how you want. some of the best musicians i know play in there bedroom, and believe me these guys are phenomenal musicians. They just choose not to get into "the business". as naive as it may sound i love playing bass in my room, or with other musicians. take it as it comes. to take it to seriously is taking away the enjoyment. and enjoyment is what music is all about for me.
10. i vote for a young Michael Jackson. His voice for a 9 year old and the power and control he has is very very special. I've never heard any voice that has this much presence in older singers, never mind a 9 year old. Its funny i really love his voice more back then, than i do when he was singing later in his career.. His voice on this record is natural and beautiful. Proper Michael imo. Just incredible talent.
11. Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Patti Austin, Anita Baker are just fantastic. Anita being close to my heart. . Patti Labelle and Michael Mcdonald's voices are great . Patti's voice has huge huge huge power.! when she lets go its just. from her gospel roots.….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsH63qJlIMM
12. I took the bass round to my dads last night and it was a shock to hear what a professional musician sounds like. My Dad was musical director for the New Zealand Hastings orchestra back in the early 80's when i was born. Im like, lets play around some changes. He just blew me away. He was just playing gospel, blues.Classical. He was from the old school, mum made me play when i was 10 years old. He reads music like i speak, Trying to keep up with him melodically is very hard. Anyone have any parents who are musically gifted.?
13.
Nice. Shades of Fela Kuti or King Sunny.
Please enlighten me bud..my ears are starving as always.
14. Michael League, from Snarky Pup, one of my favourite bassist's Jonathan Maron from Groove Collective on the Yamaha,,Bob Lanzetti and the amazing Louis Cato on drums. This is as tight a groove as i want.
15. sorry to shift off topic. but everyone(maybe) should hear this guys playing.Jonathan Maron, his groove is great. the solo is just so musical @ 2.50. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnbMcfe_KcY
16. Its a small detail but i love the way the bass controls are sunken into the body. Details like that remind me of Martin Peterson (Sei) basses. My Elwood has such an impeccable finish. Details like foam in the truss rod adjustment hole. The screws that hold the body to the neck are drilled to hold specially made washers and screws. These basses are very well made. Ive been a huge Lakland Skyline fan, and had a 55-02 for a while. Loved it. But these instruments are better, and cheaper. My Elwood is 3.9 KG's. Im having an Aguilar obp3 stack knob installed and this Jazz bass is going to me a Monster. Bartolini's also. Incredible basses at twice the price. no doubt.
17. For sure with those mids, AG70's are a winner.. I'm torn. Damn you JT you pickup temptress.!!, you got me gassin.!!
18. This gives you a limited idea of what there songs are about. its an insight to there profound genius, thoughts and lyrics. You might have to know your Steely Dan to recognise some of the terms. http://www.steelydandictionary.com
19.
Another one for you B5..
I do wonder though if the HC's sound that good, why would they offer up the single coil version? Thanks for the vid JT. Im selling the Delano J5 pickups and the Delano Sonar preamp. Now I'm waiting for my post to be deleted.
20. Talking of Skate vids, Sorry to hijack the OP's thread. i was a skater in the mid 90's, Public Domain was a classic, with Ray Barbie, Eric Sanderson, Chet Thomas. McRad was the band. love the record.
21. The ultimate (for me) Steely Dan Live. a very funky Kid Charlemagne. Tom Barney on bass. Jon Herrington on the amazing guitar solo.
22. I would go for the AG4j60 or the AG4j70, The 60 has a nice scooped mid, but nice high's. The 70 has more high mids . I prefer the AG4j60, its a smoother tone to my ears. but I'm torn as i love that 70's punch. Prefer single coils also to be honest as i don't record much.. so the HC's are not for me. The 4j Hot are not to my taste at all. I was thinking about a 5 string set for my Jazz bass. I was also thinking of putting in a OBP3 pre but i might wait and see what its like passive. I do really dig the Aguilar sound. Next I'm going to get an Aguilar T shirt with matching pants and socks. By the way Jonathan Maron is a MONSTER bass player. His playing with Groove Collective is quite amazing. Great vid thanks JT.
