Do you notice a lot of difference in your string gauge and tone.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I always thought the heavier the gauge the richer the tone, but also takes more effort for ones attack on the strings. -
The Elwood 5's will keep up easily with Sadowsky Metros. My Elwood 5 is so playable. They leave Fender in there wake.

The best bass playing you have ever heard.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
this is panty wetting phenomenal finger style from the master on a 5 string. his slap is obviously fantastic but i reckon his finger style is better. When he plays he really plays. He plays a stock Miller Fender 5 string on this record. he told me that when i met him. yes that is my claim to fame. -
I dug into this ages ago and it turns out it was some little known, London based producer that played on the album version of Space Cowboy. I'll see if I can find the relevant link again!
if you can dig any deeper than i dug 40hz your a better digger than thee. could it possibly be that its not even an electric bass being played.? -
Just a short question. Just asking what you think of the Delano sound. i have a Delano Sonar 2 and a set of j5 Delano pickups?

Johann Asmundsson imo is such a fantastic bass player. Ive always love Mezzoforte. I bought the live in Reykjvik DVD and i was blown away. great playing on that Sadowsky, but when the drummer plays his bass with his sticks. i was like.! well thats something i dont see in a band very often. Great tasteful slap playing the man anyways. Check his solo slap playing @ 2.20 followed by the great drummer Gunni Briem playing his bass on the sticks. Check out also a certain percussionist from early Incognito.

Its a Hamer Impact, from 92 i believe. apart from a alembic Rouge 5 i saw once, this my favourite bass of all time. You don't see many Hamer's about these days. There were 12 of these specific instruments made with the EMG soap bars.they are so rare and thats why i want one. Rare as a rocking horses fart. It must sound epic. they must cost a fortune. That flame maple all the way through the body to the neck. what a bass.
Ernie McKone was one of the original guys playing on the old Acid Jazz recordings, playing with a group called Push, he was also usually the bass player with the band credited as 'Acid Jazz Alliance' on those old compilations they used to produce. More famously he was also the guy on all the Galliano releases. It doesn't sound like him to be honest - he usually found himself a really deep pocket with a little 1- or 2-bar ostinato and mostly stuck to it. I always figured he had a background more in reggae music from the way he played, he was a lovely groover though, and could bust it out when required if you've ever seen Galliano live.
You beat me too it. Austin. Push have always been a favourite of mine. I saw Galliano with Omar and Ernie at the Jazz Cafe playing this record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx0mc5fa15k -

This is near bass playing perfection for me. Willie Weeks on Donny's classic Little Ghetto Boy. talk about dancing around the chords, his playing is just wonderful on that P Bass. he reminds me of James Jamerson. possibly where he got his style and influence from.
Have I misread the OP's post? I thought it was Zender playing right through on Return of the Space Cowboy. ?
Stuart didn't play on this version. I still to this day am not sure who did. I would love to know. I thought it was Randy HOPE Taylor but I've been told its not by Incognito's Bluey. There is a thing in my mind thinks its an incredible player called Ernie McKown. he played bass on this incognito record. I've just got a hunch it was him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJKQS_p9q5k -
At last after many years I'm going to see The brand New heavies. Me and my sister have Tony Momrelle from Incognito and the incredible Rita Satch at lunch time in Cheltenham. then the Motherf***in Brand New Heavies at 8.00 pm. with 13 friends who love them as much as i do. The great music from Jan K, Simon, Andrew etc just kept coming and coming. I'm amazed they started the group in the early 80's.?!!
IMO anyone who can come up with music like this can look as pleased and arrogant as he likes.
im in agreement with you Chris. its very well put together music.

what Yamaha is he playing on this.?

IMO this is one of best grooves I've ever heard. Donal Fagen, Tom Barney again. Walter B. When i play with any musicians i want them to be as tight as these guys. its a big ask but if you don't ask, you won't get it. always best to look further than what you can play and push yourself imo. what i mean is timing, nuance, I'm obsessed with timing and playing around the beat, in an honest way and not a flamboyant one. this is just an excellent groove.
This I think it came from you or one of your threads. I love a lot of bassists but I've yet to find a performance to excite me as much as this
Ive never heard this record. its a cracker by the way. That is Meshel Ndegeocello on bass. if there is anyones bass playing i can recognise its Meshell's. -
S Zender and RH Taylor certainly excited me as bass players at that time, I believe they played in ways that had not been done before. I remember constantly listening to "blow my mind" so simple yet fresh. Whilst I'm in awe of M Miller and his peers, I lose the emotional attachment to their music when it becomes about the bass over the style where someone like Zender plays the most beautiful and groovy lines that support the song rather than sit on top of it (if that makes any sense)
Im all for bass players that play for the record. Why wouldn't they.? ok its nice to have a bit of flash. sometime they do but i prefer guys like Pino,. for me, perfection when it comes to understated groove bass playing. If he ever played on Space Cowboy i think my headphones would explode. I still think Marcus Miller when he plays finger style is just one of the best bass players alive. But he is not Pino Palladino. -
Snarky bass player is a good player, no doubt; but his gurning iritates me. I've seen the Puppies live a couple of times and both were great gigs; but ML just comes across as an arrogant know-it-all, who's just a bit too pleased with himself. He's worked hard to get there and I take my hat off to him for that and his playing;.....but please, lose the attitude!
Ive seen them live twice. and he didn't come across like that at all for me. I'm not saying he can't be Bassnut. I saw them at the cheltenham jazz fest and after they all went to a bar across the road and i got talking to him.he even bought me a drink, he came across as very level headed to me. believe me i can recognise some unbalance in a personality when i meet them .. i found Cory Henry, who was the organ player that night quite arrogant. but I was thinking, you just don't know what is going on in these peoples lives. He might of been knackered, pissed. who knows.
