Mr Phillips on drums. what more could you want. fantastic musicians all round. Toto dipping into Weather Report at 5.45 !

What a great band. . and i love them. I've heard some incredible vocals from mature women as I'm sure we all have . but this is quite something for some one so young.

I'm aware that that a lot of guys have seen this vid. but i reckon not this one. Such a great vid of a great trio. its one of the best Pino vid's I've ever seen him play on/in. his groove is just off the wall. so whats the time sig.? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d7XVWY7Kms#aid=P6F2vq5FLgA i think its in 11/8 and goes to 4/4.

my dad was the musical director for a NewZealand orchestra, as he is very old fashioned. and heavily into Bach, Stravinsky, Debussy. he wanted me to play the piano. i didn't want to at the time.. but i did years later, after 12 years of playing the bass. i showed him this piece of music 2 years ago, and it made him cry. orchestration is hugely powerful, ..it can be used in such a powerful way in other genres, as Ambient has posted. i love this piece of music. it does put a tear in my eye. its the strings that i find very moving. Wojciech Kilar. Love Remembered. a very modern piece of fantastic orchestration. http://www.youtube....h?v=77sgxma6UbM

its a never ending discussion i think.. and some really good points made.. i shall now bow to Digus's expertise in everything bass.
Because until one HEARS what these things sound like, one don't know sh*t.
ha ha. oh Nige you have such a soft way about you.

yes but there is no Shuker or Sei even at there top end, that you will have to pay 15 + grand for.. by the way i didn't mean to offend anyone who goes on stage with these instruments. i apologise if i did.
The price of Alembic basses is a result of the sheer amount of hours it takes to make each instrument. All their basic costings are done on the number of hours it typically takes to make each bass. Add to that the fact that this labour-intensive work is done by highly skilled craftsmen and women using the finest quality woods , proprietary hardware and electronics , and then you start to see why they cost so much. And as for Sei basses versus Fodera or Alembic, I've never played a Sei but I'm sure they are excellent instruments , but where those two revered American bass builders score over them in terms of desirability is the overall appeal of their designs and the characteristic sounds of their basses. Build quality is not the only consideration. Particulaly with Alembics, no other bass will adequately substitute , they sound unique. Fodera less so ( I'm not a huge fan myself, just not my thing ) , but they inspire devotion in some players. There are all kinds of excellent bass builders out there, but most of them fail to capture people's imagination in the same way that Alembic and Fodera have done.
sorry i just don't buy it. some alembics are nearly three times the price of a Shuker, or a Sei. and Alembic don't put three times as much effort in to there making there basses than these makers. . they ride on there image, and can get away with the huge prices of there basses on that fact. its nothing to do with capturing peoples imagination. its about very cleverly forming an image, with top players, endorsees etc. and riding the wave and overcharging because the can. just like Fodera, fantastic instruments no doubt, but overpriced. yep. i think its very naive to think otherwise. i personally would feel like a bit of a wally, walking on stage with a Fodera or an Alembic.

i have one in my Jazz and it is awesome. total turbo for the jazz bass sound. does colour it slightly though.
Photos would be good, but Japanese 62 re issues had that earthing strip. Not uncommon basses but good. Should also have a strap pin on back of headstock. Serial number and crafted or made in Japan should be on back of neck, just above where it meets the body. There is a Fender dater site as well, just google it. Cheers, Karl.
only the AVRI's have the strap button on the headstock, unless its a non export. and it won't be Crafted in Japan. it will prob say Made in Japan. it will possibly be made of Basswood, or Alder on the non export model. i have seen so many of these and they are good. what colour is it.?

Oh, just remembered when I went to see Steely Dan back in 1974, they had him in their touring band too.
Sounded too far ahead of the beat for me and generally not sweetly timed. It might have been that the backing was so quiet. It's just a perception thing though, clearly for most it sounds fine. I'm not keen on his tone either
i can't say that I'm overly keen either on the tone, but for the song, i think its necessary. as for timing, the only thing i can think of, is its a P bass, and has a fatter spread of note, so is maybe not as focussed as maybe a Jazz. that and maybe the recording.? I'm only guessing to be honest. and I'm not one for telling people what they can hear. different ears and all that.
