I bought the DVD too...still find it hard to believe that they didn't notice that Rainey was playing slap. Becker and Fagen never missed anything so I doubt that something prominent like that would pass their attention.
imo, of course they knew. they just let it go because it sounded great. Rainey's slap was not really out there. just a little more aggressive for that certain part of the song. I think Chuck was spot on. -
What groove is better from these magicians of bass?
That is what I would describe as "sensible" crazy money, if that makes sense. Always bear in mind , if you buy really expensive hifi equipment, you also have to budget for the price of a property with a space you can use as a dedicated listening room, because unless the environment is correct you won't hear anything like the true potential of the equipment. I have had most of my own relatively modest system for several years, and none of my components are the latest thing by any means- my CD player dates back to the mid-1990's( but it is recognised classic), and the newest thing is my Exposure amp that I bought about five and a half years ago- but a good sound is a good sound , regardless of the age of the equipment, and I am very happy with the overall sound it makes. I know people who have spent a lot more money than me and ended up with systems they are far less happy with. That doesn't mean, however, that I don't recognise the superior performance and potential for enjoyment of much more costly and impressive gear than my own. If I had a more normal and settled home life I would probably have bought a much better system by now, but there seems little point when I seem to hardly get time to listen to it. .
i think a good separate system is only as good as the room your sitting in. and as your point suggests, you really don't get the true potential in most home situations. i live in a detached house, so i have some great M Audio monitors for when the girlfriend is out, and some AKG's when she's in. i have a pair or 1980's KEF speakers that are fantastic, i think there called Cantor 3. huge things -
I think Lindsey's guitar playing and amazing voice are great on this live classic. as is Mick's drumming. fantastic stuff. an absolute class act.

I have always loved this series of programs. loved the one on Led Zepplin. thing i love about this programme is the depth they go to discover the band, the music, the interviews, etc its just a damn good watch, if you love a particular band. just so happens this band are a true gem of a band for me. sorry the title is The Making of AJA, but its actually Classic Albums as you will see. i have it on DVD. its on SKY next week but i beat them to it. i hope you enjoy it if you haven't seen it already. hope you guys can share others that are good. a friend of mine has Krell separates and sone fancy B & W speakers, it is incredible. possibly as good as you would want, sound wise. he spent £9000 i think. £350,000 is very silly. its like those in ear headphone's i saw fro £1900. what sort of moron would spend that.?? -
you piss taking buggers.

Beaver Felton is the man, such a nice bloke to talk to, really knows his stuff, and there MM gallery/stock is fabulous.
MDF is wood sweepings and glue!
i almost feel sorry for a bass made out of it. i would take it home and love it.
-
i awlays wondered what a bass made out of MDF would actually sound like with high quality pickups etc, as it has such an even density throughout. ? just a thought. not sure how much of a percentage of the wood is glue mind. and how that would effect sound.
Basswood is indeed an extremely good wood for making guitars out of, and more and more manufacturers are recognising that, particularly for six string guitars,. Sounds great for some basses too, like the previously mentioned Bongo. The great thing about basswood is that it is relatively lightweight and very resonant. I think most of the stigma some people attach to using basswood( or tilia, lime or linden , as it is also known) is because it is very plain in appearance and relatively inexpensive compared to some other commercial timbers. It is , however, a wood that has long been recognised for its' acoustic qualities , and as far back as the middle ages it was being used to carve woodwind instruments. Nothing wrong with baswood on the right bass.
Usually why you find basswood bodies are usually painted, or topped with a nicer wood like some G & L's.. i won't go into what wood sounds good debate, but imo it sounds just as good as any other with high quality pickups, and good strings. but thats another subjective debate.
Unfortunately, my friend, you have contradicted some folks very definite ideas about how and in what manner a muso should spend his money when choosing a bass.
to be fair mate, i don't think that was, what some guys points were at all. but never mind.
Am i alone in having no idea what this is supposed to be?
Oh come on Geoff.! man you just don't get Jazz do you.
You don't know what respect is.
-
possibly because its a softer wood, so can be easily dinged. Companies usually use a hard laquer/paint as to rectify this. Like the Bongo. thats made out of basswood.
-
Well my ESP f series has a basswood body. It's definitely no solid wood, it's seriously like a piece of MDF with a nice top, I know this because I threw it off stage.
im confused.
-
Yes mate I'll put some up! Depends what basswood really. Basswood can range from solid unknown wood to MDF and chipboard
? BassWood is a name for a species of Tree mate. also known as American Linden. bit of nerdy info for you.
Dunno mate. As you can tell by my name I'm all about the jazz. Just never been into p's and never really dug the sound. Maybe after a few bad experiences. But it's only personal preference eh. The old 60's and 70's p's I quite like, don't get me wrong. But the P bass is so ripped off nowadays every cheap guitar brand brings out a nasty basswood p bass, I suppose seeing all those ugly cheap things turned me against em a long time ago.
why do people think BassWood is bad .? there is nothing wrong with BassWood, seriously I've played some kick ass Jazz basses that were BassWood bodied, its very similar to ash but without as much grain. anyways, you got any more lovely pics of this Fodera.?
It's not a mantra, and I'm not a star-struck fan, I have a couple of albums on cassette and a free CD. However, I can recognise and appreciate damn good music and musicians, and understand why people like them so much. Most musicians should be able to do that. I detest Weather Report, but I can appreciate them. I can't stand Bach, but I understand why he is so revered. Open your ears and the stuff between them a bit mate, yes?
+1000

bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion

Bill Sharpe is just amazing imo. one of my musical heroes. anyone who might not have heard of him, he was the pianist for a band called Shakatak, . you might recognise a song called Night Birds . imo this is epic in anyones book.
