They do. Remember that strings are made of (magnetic) metal and pickups contain magnets. The magnetic field pulls the string downwards and restricts the string's upward movement - thereby reducing vibration and sustain. Lowering pickup height gives a reduction in volume but and increase in sustain. For most of us, there is a compromise height where we don't lose too much of either!
doesnt the string have to be very close to restrict movement.? interesting. i wonder also, if a closer pickup to string produces a more focused sound.?

Trick ...how to get new strings in 10 minutes....
Ha! A bit of a trick. When you remove a string it regains a touch of resiliance (for about 2 minutes) Also, the area where it's been " fret worn" is different when the string are removed (or loosened completely so where it touches the fret is a little fresher. But the string has still changed it's molecular structure from vibrating thousands of times so what is old cannot be new. It'll just be revived for short time and go dead by the end of a set.
Yeah but for the people who are broke, it still brings life back to dead strings. its not a new set and wont last forever, but give the idea a break. anyone would think reviving old strings was a really bad idea. Lowender while reading your techno babble, a little life went from my strings. jeez but seriously sometimes i cant get strings in time, so a quick refresh for a rehearsal is just what i need. -
How people play live and how they play recorded will vary enormously, few bands will put on an album quality performance, and in my experience top players will calm it a bit when they know a show is being recorded. I think there's room for a bit of showboating on gigs as it can add to the live experience especially if you can add a wow factor. Having said all that I broadly agree and find that I'm more scintillated by a very controlled performance which makes the odd fill seem jaw dropping in context, than an endless stream of chops which ultimately can detract from the song exactly as you say.
ive heard alot of Andrew's playing recorded, and he does like to flex his musical muscles. its nice to be a little humble me thinks
Yeah, a couple of times many years ago. Pub gigs to largely disinterested punters, not stadiums full of fans!
it was a few years ago.im sure it was you that i saw in gloucester. with a soul band. your bass playing was smokin. my sister said" where the f*** did he come from."

a very young Alphonso Johnson, George Duke, Billy Cobham and some stupid genius with a fag in his mouth. Alphonso's groove is unstoppable.!

for once im going to knock someones playing. as much as i love Andrew Gouche's playing, i cant help but feel that he really takes too much time flying around the groove. there is something to be said for the root note, simplistic as it is, but he seems to want to get to it , or get away from it, in the most extravagant way possible. i can dig it now and again, but its all the time. the thing is, there incredible fills, and amazing run downs to notes, but i want to be suprised by a bass line, ,. not just a barrage of mega bass playing. dont get me wrong i dig the discovery of notes around a chord, but sometimes its a little too much. and it really takes away the original song . me knocking Andrew Gouche.? how dare i. well i have.
The guy is super groovy - and he can play great solos too without resorting to obvious chops - I saw him with Scott Henderson at Ronnie Scott's and he was so deep in the pocket he really held the gig together - very musical and solid too - plus he has a couple of great pedals... which is all in this clip in his wicked solo at the end. And as a man I know said... never trust a skinny bass player...
thats me f***ed, although ive put on some weight

superb. Travis is holding that down.i cant help but listen to Larry's playing. hes a fantastic guitarist. great solo but you can keep the envelope filter and i will take the octave pedal thanks.
I thought the bass could maybe have done a bit more in that track to keep it driving but that's me being cynical Love the entire album. I love trying to work out which of the three bass players did what on the album too ha! The bass solo on track 3, Gorgio by Moroder is great!
yeah i dig that track too. i thought the 'game of love' was a fantastic record.

The next "big thing" in bass development?
bubinga5 replied to Ghosts Over Japan's topic in Bass Guitars
there are some really good suggestions here about ampflication. like wireless amplification on your hip.. but electric bass wise, i very much doubt there is any more you can do to a bass guitar to make it any better, there are guys making basses at the pinnacle of instrument making. yeah there are string through bodies, high mass bridges, headless basses, .. dont get me wrong, there all cool in my book but it always seems like over kill to me. i like a good preamp, but a preamp can really make a difference in your sound. a string through body wont. neither will a headless bass. i can understand the zero fret, and i can understand PLEKing, but these are all minor tweeks to the wheel. instrument making only really needs a certain amount of perfection. the innovation or music, comes from the artist in his or her music. how many times can you innovate the wheel, to drive it, how many times can you innovate a bass guitar, its a sum of its parts. dont get me wrong i love talkin bass, but it gets a bit neardy sometimes.
