1. i couldnt bear the thought of bass playing being constricted in any way, like it or not. Music is about evolution. we wouldnt have some of the greats if musicians didnt push a boundary or two.. cant get my head around such old fashion views, that some seem to have
2. i jest of course. i dont like knocking anyones playing, but it gets to a point where its so bad, i just cant keep it in. anyways its was about 25 years ago.. i shouldnt mock but i cant help it. i just hope that knowone in the 80's learned anything from this guy. love the SLAP on the top of his bass. thing is when he breaks his playing, down hes not bad at all.. 3. not sure if this has been posted before, but my sister sent me this. great live sound i think.. Synchronicity 2 which is second is great. always been a favorite song ....................... excuse me ladies and gentlemen, a slight technical hitch. thank god that wasnt my secret Shakin Stevens video. 4. it was Gjones, but hes had 3 necks on that original 72 jazz.. the maple pearl neck being the latest incarnation, he replaced in the 90's with original tuners etc.
5. for a start i love that guys playingm and thankd for posting dude. but there is no pinnacle imo. in music/ bass playing. music is too invinite a subject. its a bit like saying, is that girl/man the most beautiful person ever.. ? there are bassists/musicians you might favour, but the pinnacle of bass playing. impossible. not always of course, but i sometimes find the truely original bassists dont have amazing techiniques. they just use notes very cleverly and are hugely musical. Sharay Reed is one of them imo.
6.
What a load of pretentious sh*t.
thank the bass and musical world, that there isnt too much "pretentious sh*t" ? out there. where would we be.?
7. really cant see the hating hear. musically i dont think anyone was getting in each others way. cant say its my bag or what i would listen to. it certainly didnt hurt my ears. some wonderful playing from Patitucci, as there were others. i think the concept is worse than the actual reality
8. its $8000..!!??....thats over 5 grand.. rediculous. think that Geddy paid $200 back in the day from a pawn shop. Fender really do know how to take this piss
9. Pino without doubt. not just the UK's i would say Pino is one of the best in the world.. Julain Crampton is the bomb. and incredible bass player.
10. yeah that was very cool funk. me likey alotee.
11.
Great version LFDH
excellent.!!
12. yes they should be of equal volume when you set both pickups at full volume.
13. possibly not the best example but this playing is very cool on an unusual track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIdzGh01QIA
14.
AWB were a fantastic band and up their with the best but the best funk band ever? Better than the JB's, the Meters, Ohio Players, T-Connection, Funkadelic? Really? Let's just say they were great.
i stand by my post. i dont really care for hardcore funk. it lacks harmony. i am and will always be a soul man for that reason., and i can hear that in AWB. dont get me wrong i love Maceo Parker, but some funk is very lacking in aspects that i previously mentioned
15. My wife took out a CD of Nick Kershaw and she played this record. fantastic bass playing. sounds like Mark King to me.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67N6TLG2_L4
16. like Pete said, he plays like a vocalist, i was reading an interview when he said that he gets his influence from vocal and horns, from Anita Baker to John Coltrane to Miles obviously.
17. i think the best thing about them is that they came from a country that wasnt really known for its funk, but it turned out, they were arguably the best funk band ever. the power of the american influence
18. they turned Rufus's/ Chakas track into super cool soul imo. they had a serious amount of soul in there funk. you can hear Alans very tasteful slap playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHf-fQUF9yk
19.
One of my favourite bands, seen them many times. Great basslines in their stuff, always economical but just 'right' for the song etc. 'If I ever lose this heaven', 'Work to do' and 'Atlantic Avenue' amongst some of my faves.
ive always loved Alans bass playing. super funky. super tight, just right.
20. i was playing this record loud in my house, my girlfriend is not really into funk but even she was boppin her head. always loved there music. i can safely say that they are up there with soul funk greats..
21.
You mean because I should know already? It's certainly not obvious to me what makes him 'great'.
well i meant bass players generally, but of course. music is very subjective.
22.
Yeah of course! I'm just curious to see why bass players regard him so highly. I've met a lot of bass players who love his style.
i dont think you need to be curious to see why bass players regard Marcus Miller so highly. ? im no fan boy, but i think Marcus Miller gets caught up in the "hes just another slap bassist" but to me hes much more innovative than that. its not just his playing that is great, its all there to hear. i think hes gone past having a flawless sound and technique many years ago. its about his music. why cant people look past his slap.? there are lots of stuff hes played on that arent slap. there is so much stuff hes done over the years as a session bassist. even if you dont like his music, i cant see why anyone wouldnt at least acknowledge him as one of the greats. i dont like Elvis i still think he was great.
23. Yeah i really dug that album and im not really into solo bass albums. Jekyl and Hyde is a killer fingerstyle groove. a great allround productionm and some great music.. of course some of the bass playing is incredible.!
24. oh how different we are , i so dig Stuarts playing on that track, hes got a real groove but Mr X's fills and general traveling around the bass line is way more inventive, its alot more laid back as a track but man is the bass line more busy, in the best way. this is not taking anything away from Zenders bass line because its awsome, the difference is Stuarts bass line keeps me in the groove, Mr X's does that, but takes me on a journey. there is a huge difference for me.
