the potentials from musical expression are vast imo.. emotions are being communicated, different qualities of touch, articulation, color, intensity, energy, when i hear a good bassist he is manipulating my emotions. and thats just the bass, never mind the other instruments that make up a band... i care not for the way someone looks, im all for someones playing when i hear Earth Wind and Fire im in heaven, thats real musical expression for me. original and comes from the soul. -
can you please explain what you want to say with this, andrew?
yes i can. i think people who play any instrument have different goals, as to what they want to achieve. im in no way saying any approach or attitude towards music/bass is better than the other, its subjective and personal. but my personal feeling is that music or expression of music is something that should communicate. how well you communicate is up to the individual.. -

maybe a good example is this. im aware that these are some very advanced bass players, but my example is extreme to highlight my point. Bernard Edwards plays Good Times, by Chic on a Stingray, then Marcus Miller plays the same song on a Stingray.. it would sound totally different .thats personality for me as im sure it is to most of us. there is nothing wrong with playing that great bassline to the letter, but to have some unique slant on it, is great -
I suppose it depends on a few factors..... How long has your friend been playing.... Does he have the skills to have a "voice"...... Does he have the confidence to make something his own..... Or does he want to be true to the original. I suppose it's the difference between competence and expression. If I look at the gig I did Friday night.... I played my basslines well and accurately but I have not yet developed my own expression. The bassist in the band after me who has 30 years experience was very much making basslines his own and was a joy to watch (and I learned a lot from watching him). If your friend is competant and is enjoying what he is doing, I don't think it's fair to be too critical of him just because you feel he lacks a creative flare. Let's face it 99% of punters don't notice what is going on down the low end as long as things are pounding along nicely!
hes very competent, and i probably sound like a bit of a knob, critisising someone playing but it was constructive critisism. im not saying im the best player in the world but i recognise the detail, and for me the details when you put them all together, make good music and they make it your own. i guess it comes down to knowing your instrument fully, and then putting some personality into it. -
i was watching a friend of mine playing a cover of Donald Fagans Night Fly. and while i digged his playing , i couldnt help but think that he was just going over the motions of this bass line.. its so important to me to have your own personality, its such a subtle thing, but its so important.. i hate knocking anyones playing, but i said to him, hey you should loosen up and stop playing the bass line exactly like the original. im not saying you should change any notes, its more in the accents, and feel of the bass line. does anyone feel this way.?
Not even that close to Prince to be fair but what he is doing is bringing performance and entertainment back to live shows- choreographed band routines etc which is a nod to Prince and his side projects and through Prince, James Brown.
hes a nod towards Micheal jackson in a distant pop way, but i think time will tell.. Bruno may come out with some music that will blow us all away, just like Thriller did.. but im pretty sure he will never be as epic as this guy.. Prince spoke through his body and his instrument.. there was a big gap between MJ and Prince imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjpiBm2Q-gc

ok not what your thinking.. this guys playing is always a joy to listen to.. nothing too much, nothing too less. hes just right.. always interesting.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR4Mq1PqUpQ&list=PL639850C70005D547
I doubt the music industry would allow it, purely because there are so many other acts trying to get coverage.
i think times have changed musically, for people who are learning/listening to music, or being a performer.. back when Micheal Jackson was a youngster, im sure it was very hard to make music, learn music, listen to new music.. and if you did, it it mostly live.. im a big believer that being a talent in the mainstream back then, was way harder than it is now..

Nordstrand gets my vote.. this bass in particular looks supurb.. imo..

Its just about the broadest question you could have asked, seeing as this is the broadest market, when it comes to electric bass.. budget is always a good question to start on..? seeing as you already have a very good passive 4 string, what about an active 5 string.?

he aint that good.. doesnt come close to that genius imo..
Don't really like the song, but refreshing to hear slap on what sounds like a P rather than a J with both pickups on.
yeah sounds like a Precision to me.. could be a Jazz with the back pup rolled off mind.

i heard this record and thought wow, what a great funky pop record.. nice to see some slap bass on a pop record in the charts.. well done Bruno.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxXBL7wYjLI
Don't like the pickup spacing at all on 75s . Infact I've hated the pickups on every Jazz I've tried.
there not all 60's spacing, i jhave an MIJ 75 ri with 70's spacing
