What's all this 'good stuff' and 'bad stuff'? There is no 'good' stuff, or 'bad' stuff, only stuff you like or dislike. There's certainly 'popular' stuff, which can be defined by measurement, but it's an unreliable guide to whether you'll actually like it or not. Just enjoy the stuff you do like and all will be well with your world.
yep its all subjective... beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but i dont think that can be a rule for music always..... there can be music that is maybe not as good quality as some others, or as interesting, compelling, inspiring...

im thinking that younger people grow up and make there own minds up as to what they find interesting as i did... i very much hope that music production in the future isnt governed by the want of fame, and easy ways of making music for that reason... all of us on this forum work hard to play bass because we want to make good music .. nothing of real substance comes from something that you dont have to work hard to get....
-
yes your right Kongo.. but my problem is that the good stuff is being pushed under the surface... the younger generation should have great music as the norm, just like i was shown when i was watching tv as a youngster... top of the pops had bands like madonna, thompson twins, the smiths.. ok there was some sh*te, but knowhere near as much as there is now......, people like mr cowell with his very popular tv program are teaching kids that this is the acceptable face of music... and its total rubbish with no substance....some people might not care, but i do because im passionate about music as an art form... just like any other form of art, quality should be the norm.. popular music is for the masses, but its being watered down

my god i think some of the best music ever written came from the 80's.. i recognised it as good then and always will........of course this depends on what bands you are refering to... i think people like Prince defined the 80's as well as bands like the human league, simple minds, level 42, the Police.. as well as many underground musicians i was and am still into...,... these bands music will last forever imo..and all of these guys were seriously musical people.. even pop music at the time like Curiosity killed the cat, which lets face it were a boy band came out with some seriously good pop records... yesterdays madonna is todays sh*t called lady gaga... sorry for any offence but i really cant hear any good music in her at all.... these were bands that were in the charts.. alot of stuff in the charts now possibly wont be remembered in years to come... or maybe they will, on a different level of appreciation..?
I don't deny the entertainment appeal of the X-Factor, but it does represent a part of the music industry and TV that I truly, truly loathe. I hate the way it gives the appearance that something can be gained from doing nothing at all, I hate the way it conveys a sense that largely talentlessness individuals can be offered careers (most often fleeting) when other far superior songwriters, singers and musicians should be offered the opportunities instead. It seems terribly unjust and somehow, and yet it gets dressed up as harmless Saturday night TV and accepted. I think Gary Barlow is a drab songwriter, I think the rest of the panel are devoid of talent, I think Cowell has an unhealthy stranglehold on music and I think the fact that we offer this kind of thing to young aspiring musicians is damaging. It's a money-spinner and every time I hear about it which I inevitably do through either the media, family or friends, I can't help feeling incredibly angered by it.
this, i just wasnt as eloquent...
Taking music too seriosly .......Steely dan ........UGH , I am sure they composed songs by throwing a bucket full of random chords in the air and playing them in both the order and the time sequence that they landed .
i think those random chords worked quite well though..

my other half and her friend have just been watching the X Factor.... ive been accused of being cynical and taking music too seriously... the only people i can turn to for some back up are my fellow bass players.... i hate to be judgmental and a music snob, because everyone enjoys music on different levels.. but i cant help but be annoyed by the total false absolute rubbish that people seem to be taking as the norm... what bothers me is most of the viewing public. especially the younger generation... are being indoctrinated to think this is all that music has to offer... when i was young i was brought up with stevie wonder, chaka khan, steely dan..... ok i was into shakin stevens for a while... :Dbut when i used to listen to music as a nipper it was magical, and that feeling has stayed with me until now and always will... i cant help but think television as a media is peddling the fast food version of music... our younger generation is taking this as the norm when it comes to music, so dont expect much more... over years to come good music is being watered down, personally i expect music to be special, and i dont see anything special in the sh*te that Louis Walsh etc...is producing 40 years ago, the younger generation had the beatles in the charts... excuse my rant...would like to hear other opinions

imo.. i still think an SR5 H has a very specific sound... not versatile imo. you may be able to change the eq but it will still sound like an SR5.. . but what it does it does so well.. super fat focused tone with that awsome subtle growl...
I wouldn't necessarily say it would need to be short scale. Check out Meshell Ndegeocello in this clip (she's playing bass from 3:00 into it). She's 5'0" tall.
yeah but this is Meshell ndegeocello.. maybe not the best example

i have a 96 non export 75 ri jazz.. i needed to replace the tuners because they are crap, imo.. rattle when not under tension, not too much of an issue but that just me.. i put some USA 75 tuners.. your bass must have been played hard and a huge amount for the frets to be worn... like others have said, leave the bridge.. nowt wrong with it with some good pickups.. imo, japanese stock pickups really dont let the instrument do what it can.. a good set of fender vintage, wizards, or if you want a true awsome tone put in some lindy fralins...
Anything by 'Chic' matey. My soul band, perhaps now a bit funk too, have just started playing 'I wish'...great fun to play. Other easy cover suggestions would be 'Express yourself,'Move on up'' or 'Long train running'....but if they're proper funkateers then funk up Chameleon or some Jamiroquai ...May the funk be with ya brother!
yeah i was thinking Good Times by Chic... might be an obvious choice though, and doesnt really have many changes in it... thankyou dude...
-
as the title says i have a rehearsal in 2 weeks for said band.. they are doing originals and some covers.. they have asked me to play the bass line to amy winehouse's valerie.. no probs there.. but they have also asked me to play a song of my choice.. .... i immediately thought of 'i wish' by Stevie Wonder... kick ass bass line that most people know and i can play with confidence... just wondered if you guys had any other suggestions, that might be suitable.. needs to be fairly recognisable, up tempo, nothing too simple, and funky... any thoughts..
-
it might be another boring PBass copy but i bet it sells... especially in the US... Labella have a huge following over there for there strings.... i would play it... would i buy one.. would i f&^k....
