Have you heard any of the "bare knuckle" pups? A mate of mine had a bass with them in, sounded like a great trad kind of noise to me.
those Bare Knuckle pps sound very nice... and cheap at 135 for the pair..
Had similar issues over time. I tried SD's and didn't like. Always found them a bit brittle. I have gone back to Fender Custom Shop PuPs - sound great with the audere preamp
The Fender CS pups always sounded good to me.. where are these available? Really like the Bartolini Jazz SC pickups though.. and there much more ergonomic than most jazz pickups..

Never would i pay 1000 for a new Fender when 1 you can them used for sometimes nearly half that.. 2 When you think how good and sometimes better Japan made basses are, there is no contest..IMO.. you can loose so much money when you buy a brand new bass and then try and sell...and most of the time the used ones feel better and are better set up by guys on BC... i know where my money would go..

Im going to put a better pair of pickups in my jazz bass.the Japan pickups arent cutting it.... just wanted some suggestions..i had a pair of Nordstrand NJse 4's in my old Custom Shop and they werent as good (to my ear) as the Custom shop pups that were in there so i want a single coil design.. i was thinking Lindy Fralins but ive never tried them... money is not an issue so can you give me some recommendations.. i really want a good trad sound... i really like Bartolini's but ive never tried them in a Fender what have you got/had in your jazz basses?
Can someone educate me here please ! . . . . Will all the Audere electronics (as I can see sat on the back of that Audere control plate) and a 9v battery all fit in the control cavity behind the control plate of a standard Jazz bass ? . . . Or do you have to employ a luthier to undertake some woodworking to create more space or carve a new battery compartment ? ? . . . . Its just that I've got a really lovely Squier VM fretless that I recently picked up second hand and cheap (cus it had a bad scratch on the front) which I intend to cover up with a vintage tort scratchplate ! . . . . Anyway . . this is a lovely fretless bass and I like the idea of the Audere preamp on a fretless . . . but, as I say, looking at the website, I just cant believe all that componentry and a 9v battery will fit in the cavity ? Any advice much appreciated . . . . Also, how long does the battery last on a Audere rig ? . . . Cheers,
the batt in mine has been in for a month and still going..... i just make sure i take out the cable from the bass when not in use..Installing an Audere is very easy.. and the battery fits in my MIJ Jazz..its a squeeze but it does all fit...i think its only vintage instruments where it may not fit... all you do is snip the pickup wires, put them into the corresponding terminals, solder or twist together the grounding wire and your there..

the humming can be stopped by sheilding the pup and control cavity with copper foil.. if you want any i have sh*t loads but you will have to buy some spray glue

good story and pics. not sure about your mutilation of the mother bass but hey.. let us know how it turns out.. ps. is it not too thin tone wise all the time with just the bridge pup?
It's funny, guitar builders spent a lot of time thinking of how to add cutaways for playability. Now they're removing them again..... progress in reverse.
new designs and modern gimmicks like light wave tech etc, will never catch on.. you know why.. because there is not much to fix.. you tell anything wrong with a jazz, MM, Warwick,P Bass etc.. you can design things to a point.. from that your fixing something that aint broke.. IMO.. its the quality in whats there already
one thing i've always wondered is how does the extra wood on a singlecut affect adjusting the neck relief ?
thats a good point..im thinking they dont need a truss rod though..?

cant stand them..and IMO totally pointless, looks awful and weighs more.. does a SC Fodera sound better than a DC Fodera.. me think not... dont get me atarted on that Warwick thing..
That G is way too far into the board. 100%.
yep for sure.. but do you think it matters.. not saying either way but does it make a bad bass?
Fair enough mate! Different strokes and all that. I bet they sound terrific but I find myself being reminded of Fender's efforts with the FMT Jazz's and they didn't do it for me at all. It's the fancy wood tops, not my thing really... with the possible exception of this:
my lord..
So is it just me that thinks the G string is inbound from the edge of the fingerboard in relation to the E string? It could be the camera angle but I'm fairly certain it is an imbalance in neck/string alignment.
the E string is thicker.. of course the G, will look further in than the E..
-
i think you will find its the actual pickup that is tricking your eye, and not the line up of the pickups... i very much doubt USA Lakland would miss a thing like this.. in fact i would bet on it..
I've seen these but I don't like them, at all in fact, they look cheap IMO at least. Also I didn't think of them as the natural successor to the DJ, but I suppose there was a large market for afterstock preamps in the DJ's so I guess that's what they're doing.
oh Ris this is where we part..i bloody love that red jazz!.. man i want to ply one of those... i doubt they look cheap up close or in the wallet

I really like this bass.. never seen a DJ like this.. very retro looking..totslly changes the usual look of a DJ. ok its a USA...Never played a bass with Chisonics either.. bet its a cracker.. Great band these.... anyone know them.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7aDstrDMf0

Man these guys can keep it tight.. Frances Hylton's playing is so good... they still sound good without drums or horns..others make soul jazz funk, but not quite like the signature Incognito sound.....makes me proud to be British..!! I like the Audere better than than the J Retro.. better made IMO, and a little less complicated. imo
