What are the differences between this and a £600 Fender?
Not alot IMO.. certainly not £1700 worth.. not even close.. ive had a £3000 Fender and an £600 MIJ 62 Jazz really wasnt that different.. still a cracking 60's CS though

i think the proper guitarists step back and understand the bass, and approach it accordingly..like any good musician should with any instrument IMHO.. ive seen a few great guitarists, play my basses and they were really good..no flash, just great harmonic fingerstyle ability.. others just started tapping.. he couldnt really hold down a groove.. i cant blame him, it just wasnt what he was used to...

Had Mr Bensons music on today after a long while the first music i ever heard was from this man..i think it was Last Train to Clarksville if i recall.. i remember being blown away and mesmerised by his playing and the rythm of this track, at the age of about nine i think... the solo work is astounding.... i always remember hearing how the hardcore jazz crowd were in dismay, when he wanted make a bit more of a crust, and go a little more commercial..abet still playing with Earl Klugh and others... i personally think he made some of the best soul pop records ever made... He is such a humble man, who shows his appreciation to who he thinks influenced him and a love of musicians he learns from today... now thats a musician..IMO i went to see Incognito in London about 8/9 years ago and the special guest was George Benson... that was a great night.. This is a great interview.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAwxZ0Bp5hE Last train to Clarksville http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyj7B4wFoo just a fantastic track.... with Earl Klugh..im sure its Mr Miller on bass..i just love this sort american jazz soul.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUPHZsLGtXw The best lesser known stuff like C Smooth and others dont come up on YT...?? This is such a wonderful track and what a live vid...!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi3EtuDxUf4 end of waffle..
It's ridiculous isn't it! Conversely, I walked into a shop a few years ago and asked to try a late 80's Stingray (2 Band EQ, it would have been a steal if I'd bought it for the price and to this day I still kick myself for not buying it, hands down the best Ray I've ever played). Anyway, the shop assistant picked it up and did the same thing you described, and threw me a load of slap/tap licks no doubt in an effort to impress me. Once I finally got to play the bass, he had half an ear on what I was doing and after a while he started to pick different basses off the wall to see if I liked them, including on fretless bass with a brass fretless board which was one of the weirdest basses I've ever played. Well we sat and talked for ages until the store closed, he was really a lovely guy and obviously just very enthusiastic about my playing as well. Those are the kind of people I like, he literally had me play every bass in the store!
good story Ris..i should add ive had some wonderful shop experiences..I went into Guitar Guitar in Newcastle and the guy was, retail wise. at the top of his game.. LEt me look around, after a few minutes came over and asked if i wanted to try anything, to let him know, and he would plug it in for me.. i said i prob wasnt going to buy... no problem he said.. and asked if i wanted a coffee!!! yes, he asked me if i wanted a coffee.. thats unheard of!!! then again i bet Pete would make me a coffee.. i asked to plug in a bass..he came straight over and set it up..Brought me over a stool and said enjoy the bass..i tried a few basses... we had a chat for ten minutes at the end.. i then left.. it doesnt get any better than that... PERFECT!!!

Anyone know a good online bass tutorial i can recommend to someone.. From beginner to advanced with vids ..(or at least with sound samples)....Has to be pretty comprehensive.. and step by step that can be slowly worked through.. ive seen a few on you tube but its always a nightmare trying to find them all and there not very well laid out..unless someone knows of a good one, thats easy to follow..
I'd go with the pickups first. I dropped in a set of DiMarzio Ultra Jazz and they made a huge difference-especially with a series/parallel switch. If you want more, maybe try an outboard pre amp.
I agree with Doddy..theres no point in having a great pre if it cant be voiced well
why didn't you stop him and say you wanted to try it out ?
although i thought he was a bit of a tit, i didnt want him to feel sh*t if i acted negatively towards him... i think i smiled at the end and said something like 'great'..how two faced am i!!!! i could have said something to put him off doing this sort of thing again but i swear to you, i cant bare making people feel crap.. i feel horrible after.

I was in a music shop, big in music retail recently... i was working but was on my lunch.. went in, asked to plug in a Sadowsky.. the guy said sure.. while i was looking at the other basses,he had plugged it in..and proceeded to show me his skills/chops etc.. he threw everything at me, slapping, tapping, etc.. and to the rest of the shop.. i wouldnt have cared if he could play like Wooten, i just wanted to try this bass out.. i just couldnt get my head around why this guy was playing this bass to me?.. you can imagine what i thought... If i wanted to buy some shoes, would he have tried them on first and danced for me? i can imaging this was a minature version of what Clarky and others, went through at the Guitar Show.. hundreds of guys like him... why cant people be more humble???? EOR...
And the fact that he's Stuart Zender! Figure your own sound and style out, thats the real fun Si
Couldnt agree more.. its great when you hear a tone you like but its much better to forge your own personality...

Thanks.. as youve suggested, i think i will try and fabricate some for myself.. cant be very hard...

A bit late for what? This is not correct..Guru was equal in writing the music, and was also a great DJ in his own right.. he was the driving force behind Gang Starr..

Why are people basing there hate around the slap bass they have seen at some show.?..baffling...?? as far as im concerned slap bass used properly and with taste has its place, like any other technique...sorry but this is a pointless thread..
