sorry but you dont need lighter strings a or a tweeter... and its nothing to do with you technique.. please.. a few questions bro does the bass have any treble response at all. what amp are you using how old is the bass is the bass passive/active...im guessing its passive knowing westfields.. is it a jazz ive come across a couple of basses with lack of treble responce and its been because of the pickups being old and maybe getting dirt etsin them... it happens......im not saying this is your bass Paul but it may be... IF this is the case and the bass IS passive the pups are not expensive to get a fairly good set...
I've always wanted to get the double thumbing technique down. I've tried some of the youtube tutorials but I just can't seem to get it. As for other techniques, I just watch one of Andy Saxton's videos and wonder where to start haha
i like the technique..im sure there are many other variations that call for more... but for this is there anything here you couldnt pop? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnngPvedXEM on reflection i guess its more convenient to up stroke with you thumb than hike the finger over for a popper!! marlow is sooo smooth...

For me sometimes techniques can get a little out of hand...of course this down to the player...i want the hear music not an ego... if the double thumbing is done musically (not often) i love it... straight up slap and pop done right is killer.. in the nicest possible way i think most guys who double thumb or try and add to many sub divisions into there bass lines are a little over the top... but this is from a perspective of a song...not a solo...

Think i just sold the Bass to some youngsters..
I play both (though more bass, I just find it easier to write songs on guitar). I'd say the difference is you can get to the point where you can play bass in a group before you reach that point on guitar. That's just cos the bass can anchor the harmony and rythm by just bangout root notes on the beat. It's boring but it works. To be good at either is just as tough. Not that I'm claiming to be a good guitarist you understand I just know a few chord paterns and use a capo. I also found picking up the guitar reletivly easy, but I've always just put that down to playing bass for 8 years first!
In my humble opinion this is a also true... a root note is easier to find than the whole chord of course... but when someone gets past that stage is when the bass tends to catch up...single notes, travelling around the chord and chord changes are just as important...but more so because your holding down the rythm section too... -
I always say its easier to learn, but harder to play well
+ 10000 that is very true.. -
im sure there are techniques you are using now without you thinking about them...Especially with alot of those SD tunes Pete... You use (IMHO) what you feel you need to or more importantly what suites your style... fingerstyle is what i use but in the context of a song/ if you feel it need a little bit more aggression , throw a little slap in there... harmonics are cool.. hammer on, pull off's, vibrato, stacato..there all techniques you prob use day to day... suck eggs an all that..

good call Pete...WOW..that was mesmerising.... anyone notice Stanley on DB?????? ive always found Vic to be a bit more technical than M. but i prefer MM playing..... but who cares...what a fantastic couple of bassists.. even being a jazz bass nut.....ive got to say i prefer Vic's tone..but i love that lower mid bass tone... i would kill someone to see that live.. i love the ole question answer thang.......im going to give this a few watches..
+1
Yeah but its harder to understand...or put those chords together... well it takes a bit of time...the point was not really the knowledge... bass/guitar are hard in equal measures..i cant get my head around putting chords together on the guitar......lack of trying maybe.. but choosing notes for a chord or chordal progression i can do.. depends on your musical personality maybe? -
"to some youngsters" I'm a 17 year old bassist.
Some being ..SOME.. i do apologise... i was referring to maybe youngsters that werent as experienced as you guys, with the instrument... -
Was a funny thing.. i was round my sisters earlier and my dad was on the piano.. i brought the bass around and there were a few teenagers being daughters and sons of my sisters friends..im talking 18 - 23. i had a quick conversation about the role of a bass in music.. they said they hadnt really thought about it.... they were a mixed bag of hardcore house and Lady Gaga..(w hich has some great disco bass lines by the way) My Dad started playing a rendition of SummerTime up tempo.. i got the impression that they didnt think that it had much to offer until i stopped playing half way through...and started again... then they seemed to realise the important melodic, rythmic foundation that the bass has... "for me" i said, the bass is the most important instrument in most bands..( i felt like a frickin old twat) i went on to say it is the rythm and the harmony in one instrument..and whey were genuinely interested..they may just been being polite... its easy to sit in the crowd and watch.. unless your a muso or a bassist, it takes a bit more effort to understand what goes into, not just bass playing, but instruments as a whole....and the effort emotion and thought that goes into playing and learning.. thats all i have to say about that matter..

Ha ha..Ultra Rare...of course its ultra rare. its a custom...Martin doesnt make the same bass twice... a little misleading me thinks.. You could say all Sei's are rare..but that rubbish of course it is a very high price but if they want to pay it they will be getting a fantastic bass
No, that's not true, I often get PMs from guys who clearly know nothing about the bass in question (usually a Precision) asking for my opinion on a bass in the FS section. You'd be amazed just how little some members know. This is why i get arsey when mods tell us off when we question a seller re provenance etc, If the bass is what the seller says it is, why is there a problem? If not, then the question was justified. There have been a few occasions recently when mods have intervened in totally legitimate questioning (the great 'Fender Custom Shop Jaco Relic' fiasco being a good example), and I think this style of moderation is part of the reason why the forum trust has declined. I'm not having a pop at mods here, seriously, but I do miss the old days when we were able to ask genuine questions without fear of a red card. C
this is very true..ive been asked and ive asked guys including Beedster about stuff for sale...Difficult to know everything hey.. and there is always someone who knows more...thats one aspect of BC i like...
