I don't think it's wrong to say that I wouldn't recommend it. As far as improving your ears goes... If you play enough normally you will develop the skill anyway.I don't think that doing it in the dark will make it happen any quicker. I've worked with a lot of great musicians and all of them use their eyes as well as their ears. It is necessary to look at the neck, especially if you are making big jumps.
its nothing to do with learning quicker....more affectively maybe... you dont need your eyes to hear music.. i think practicing bass in this way is something maybe i do...and know one else..i still think its great for your ear, and im a better bassist for it... i guess everyone is different, and learn in different ways... i still think there is a different connection when you take away the eyes and learn an instrument from touch and sounds.... nothing wrong with using every sense you have, but i think we are closer to our emotions when there are no eyes to see the maths involved...

HA! ENTERTAINING ALL THE (sorry) same...
The idea of playing in the dark has been floating around for a few years, but to be honest I would never recommend it. I don't see why you would limit one of your senses. I don't want the Stevie Wonder was blind argument, because I don't think it's relevant. If you spend enough time with your instrument you will get used to the positions on the neck naturally, and be able to look away from the neck. Let's be honest, everyone looks at the neck of their bass or guitar when they play.
Doddy do you not think it may enhance your abilty to recognise notes through your ears and connect this into your fingers....and make a better connection in that way... i think its wrong to say you wouldnt recommend it...its not going to do any harm.., and certainly wouldnt hinder you in any way...enhance your ability to recognise notes and interverlas maybe.. this has got nothing to do with doing it for the ability to not look while your playing...im saying it isolates the middle man.(being the eyes) from the aquation....being the closer connection from your ears to your brain... you dont hear through your eyes...im aware that this is a sense we have, but in music we dont really need it... no Stevie Wonder here..but its true... i dont need ears to draw.. Suffocate one sense and another tends to flourish..
Cheers bubinga - I had even really thought about the MIJ's... more food for thought! I was more just wondering if anything has really changed sicne the old J-Bass days to what you get now, mainly in relation to the neck, as it really was stunningly easy to play.
yeah im sure things have changed...the windings of the pups from Fender years ago were lost...builders like Alleva seem to have captured that vibe... to be honest like i said Julian Crampton plays an MIJ and when i saw him play live, his tone was something to behold.... stock MIJ jazz too.. check this MIJ that Meshell's playing...
Evening all I had never really liked the look of Jazzes (the metal bit where the controls are for some reason has always put me off? dont ask me to explain why, I dont know lol) so never really ever got round to playing one. I also bought a USA Precision cos I like "the" Precision sound when I had some readies knocking about, didnt bother trying a Jazz then in the shop even when both would have been there (the P and the J) to try out against each other. After going to the Deftones gig at Brixton on Weds night (Awesome) I thought id have a little shufty in the usual places on Denmark St for anything of interest. As usual for me V&R had the stuff I most identified with, tried the Ric 4000 and then clapped eyes on http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/7152 The helpful chap there said I should really give it a go, I thought : hmmm... Jazzes aint my bag... even though I have never tried one... hey thats a bit unfair, im not giving them a chance... lets give it a go. And WOW. That is surely the BEST neck ive EVER played on a bass. EVER. EVERRRR. Very fast, the right width, the right depth, everything about it was incredible. Felt comfortable and the tones you could get out of it were amazing. Are the modern Jazzes of a similar ilk... ie. fast thin necks, easy to play etc? I might have to get me one after this experience but a vintage one is not going to be obtainable due to the price attached to them.
well..yes..the price tag....erm...... in my opinion, there not worth it.....i dont care how good a neck feels....or if meshell is playing it for me in my lounge...there is better, less £££'s,,...im fed up with 60's jazzers costing so much...although i dont knock people who buy em...i just think its silly..... as always some say that you cant get near an original 60's 70's jazz...they lost the magic of the pickup windings years ago...? there is some magic in the old fenders, but ive had modern Fenders which are superb...its the way you set them up, what strings you use and the way you play em... a great 62 RI MIJ jazz new £800 ish...a 62 Jazz is well over £8000.. i know where my money is going... i will spend the rest on a Sukop and have change for 20 packs of DR's with lots of change for a months sub of Razzle.. save your money and buy an MIM or a MIJ...Julian Crampton is happy... the USA 75 RI necks are superb but i wouldnt pay the £ for one....
Never thought of doing that, but it really makes so much sense for improving your stage performance skills. If you`re used to not having to look at the fretboard, you can concentrate on performing. Plus, this must make your playing more accurate. Definately something I`m going to try, great tip. Did do something similar though. The band I was in in the 80s - well lets say we liked a pint, and knew we wouldn`t be able to play gigs without a beer or six, so we used to rehearse drunk, so we would get used to playing in that state, so when we gigged, having that beer or six wouldn`t affect the performance. I`m sure there was some kind of logic there.
Ha! fantastic... not really the same thing but i get the logic... its not really on stage performance, more the relationship between your hands and your ears with out your eyes to guide you...... i dont really care about looking at the fret board but what your ear learns is what notes are important in certain musical situations..

i think you can over think changes from 4 to 5 and 5 to 6..im sure going to 7 and 8 is the same....its just an extension of what you know(maybe) already...just a bit of getting used to..of course there is the physical element.... also depends on the bass...ive played a Sei 5 that was as easy physically as a 4.... what music you playing, do you really need a six?... i really enjoyed playing a Yamy TRB 6..confused sometimes, but time with the instrument cures this. but the music i was playin didnt call for it....bloody heavy too, but thats not all sixers.... as always try before you buy....this is the never ending bummer with buying basses or any instrument...if you dont like it its too late... go into your local shop and annoy them with a playathon...offer them money to try out a sixer until your happy.. like Yoda would say... save you money in the long term it will

cant beleive this is still going...im going to give him my Modulus in a minute!!!!! erm...ok he hasnt replied..take it back...

The bottom line is, if you enjoy where you are and what you play...thats whats great... one day i will further my ability to play...IMHO playing bass or any instrument is a journey that is a personal thing... and as long as you entertain which im sure every one on BC does.. your left with what you want to achieve.... its you and them....hopefully we are fulfilling both.. love this Sllddx....... It comes from a balanced mind that is not interested in the argument, only the truth. ive always thought balance comes in many different forms of the life we live.. but thats another story..

I mentioned this in another thread and was wondering if anyone does it..although many do....i had an idea for great ear training and your mind/hand positioning, so for the last 5 years everytime i practice which is every day nearly, for an hour i put the head phones on and switch off the lights... its great for getting to know the intervals and hand positions you apply to your instrument... i can imagine its great training for a fretless...if i was into fretless.. anyone do this?

i think on the whole if im honest, theory is the lord...but one dont come without tother... i know as an audience member what i would prefer to see... a few notes being played with groove, even if its two throughout... above all though is some flare... groove on its own is not all the time enough...the end of the day its an expression of you and the way you like to play...groove with flair is what really shows your personality.... i know my theory (to an extent) not like some of the guys on here, but groove and flair is what entertains me.... you can make one note sound good if you got it in you... i got to be honest i wish i knew theory like Jakes Bass and Bilbo..(i believe you guys know your sh*t ? as well as others) but ive always taught my self and its difficult when your not in a geographical position to get a good bass teacher, and you dont have someone to ask when some theory gets confusing.... listening alot has helped me and i can solo because of years of playing in the dark...i get lost though sometimes,(yes when i cant find the light switch) and wouldnt want to be let loose live, if i hadnt worked it out..thats where i think theory would help me and make me feel more confident doing something off the cuff... like i said in my humble opinion, a great bassist has all of these....but groove and flair i wanna watch....
Bubinga, I'm not sure if this is always a good reason to get into a credit agreement sir. This is undoubtedly a great guitar, but it's not the only great guitar on the planet, and there will be other great guitars in a years time, or however long it may take you to save up £800 or so. Who knows, if you did get this on credit, whether you will still have it in a years time, if you're anything like me . I think there's some legal stuff about selling things that are still on HP....someone will know here. All I'm saying is the eye can want for pretty things and can get us into all sorts of trouble. Perhaps patience is best?? As an aside, the guitar I've had for the longest is the first one I ever saved up for and bought outright.....
Yeah your right i know..but its nice to know the option is there...just interested other opinions for those who have pulled the trigger... then again its not like i havent got a very good Jazz bass anyway... want another 5 though.... GAS really is an illness.. joking of course...
-
Farmer does a credit check come into play? Pitfalls?... my credit rating is not the best...
-
well you could say its being in debt...but i think thats a bit harsh as there is no interest like most banks and other companies will give you.....how many people have mortgages? its not like its thousands of pounds...yes of course you have to pay the amount billed but its still great for people who are responsible and would like great instrument but are rubbish at saving.. OR...on the other hand maybe its better to be patient, and work hard to save up for it.... then again the instrument may be sold by then...? im wondering Marks views on (for example) half way through payments, someone gets made redundant etc..? i will ask mark and maybe he can chime in...
-
Anyone been tempted by Bass Directs "take away" bass buying option...i guess they check your credit rating and all....there is a lovely JO 5 with Audere and Barts for £899... not a bad price with those upgrades... seems great if your not good at saving... http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...d_Joe_OS_5.html i really think its the best bass shop in the UK..Marks even got Ken Smiths coming in!!! Bass heaven..and only half an hour away.. yey!!! if i had unlimited cash this is where i would go... better than the Gallery IMHO.. any thoughts..
Glad you enjoyed it guys, took me a lot of persuading the American part of the company I was working for at the time that this was worth releasing on DVD and CD!! It did come out, as has a lot of great Montreux material since (including a great Weather Report show) on Eagle Rock (can plug them now I don't work for them anymore)! Own trumpet blowing over
no please explain the trumpet? did you have a hand in getting this dvd out?
