But the Sadowsky is supposed to be a 'retro' bass, isn't it? Hence the ultra vintage (UV) name and the Vintage Tone Control function.
going by looks yes...
I could never imagine buying a Sei second hand. You'd have to be lucky to find one that suited because IMO they are simply too individual. While I was waiting for Martin to do the final set-up tweaks to mine, I had the opportunity to play another Sei. Like mine it was a 5-string fretless and immaculately built, but in every other respect - looks, feel and sound it had nothing in common with the bass that had been made for me. And if you're looking at great British luthiers you've got to at least check out a Gus Bass.
i totally agree with this..Sei are very specific to the customer..so to buy second hand (although i did) is a gamble.. if i was to buy a new UK custom bass it would be Sei though...ive played GB's, Status, but the Sei i had (that wasnt even built for me) was incredible.... just something about it that oozed quality and attention to detail....i cant really put my finger on it..just something very special...i miss it dearly..... i would buy a Sei over any bass in the world... Ok maybe Sukop would get a look in... a master bass builder indeed...

One word... Awsome...if you like an active super jazz...The Sadowsky pre is very good...and sounds very, well...Sadowsky...I played one in Guitar Guitar in Glasgow and the tone was to die for... The comparison your wanting an opinion on is hard because there very different.... i would go for it but im a jazz bass nut... im sure a Pbass man will chime in here as my Pbass knowledge is limited different animals...i suggest you play the Sadowsky and see if YOU like it....

70's versus 80's Fenders and the 'vintage' thing?
bubinga5 replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
i have always thought that its got more to do with the music of the 60's and 70's than the basses.. it was a magical time, and fenders were the basses of those times... -
If you're looking at the link I posted all of those are second hand. Whether or not they're expensive depends I think on what you're after. The instruments I've bought from them have all been either cheaper than buying in the UK or simply not available here in which case any price is a good one if you can afford it. I wouldn't really consider using them for anything other than Japanese brands that are at best difficult to obtain in the UK. Also the poor Pound/Yen exchange rate means that there aren't the bargains that were around a couple years ago when £1 = ¥200.
Big Red whats the shipping for a bass from japan? roughly...
I speak Japanese, if any of you have anything you'd like translated/checked out (within moderation, I'm not going to translate a 100 page instruction manaul on how to get your Yamaha stomp-box to go "Phwaaaa") send me a PM
Now there is not many people who can say that! thanks ill keep it in mind..

Anyone ever stuck a bass pickup on a Jazz?
bubinga5 replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Bass Guitars
ive seen a Low End bass with a double J on the bridge and a single J on the neck...dont know how this sort of set up reacts sound wise. but if Brian does it its not going to sound bad im sure...dont know of anyone on BCer who has done it with the other as your suggesting...... what exactly do you want to gain from this pickup arrangement, or what do you think you might gain from it? imho the neck position has a thicker sound anyway...so adding another pickup is like feeding a pig that is already had its dinner .... the natural position of string to the bridge lends itself to a thinner sound...maybe thats why Sandberg puts a humbucker in that position to fatten the sound? i could be wrong... -
My first proper girlfriend's dad, who was a guitarist and super-successful business guy person, was a massive Steely Dan fan. He used to make me listen to them all the time and I never did get into it. It was too well-produced I think, too slick. At the time I was listening mostly to Pop Will Eat Itself and Cud. I pretended to like it though, because he liked me and I was f***ing his daughter.
i had to give that a double cause i spat my drink out!!! wasnt expecting the last bit... well thats the whole point to me about Steely Dan and Fagan... beautifully crafted, tight, harmonised music..not for everyone but you cant deny its well done... for me they are brilliant musicians... Fagan is a snotty perfectionist... and i love that.. i prob got that wrong about being snotty...but he is a perfectionist...and it shows.... they did go from pop rock into pop soul jazz.. did this bother anyone? what do thee think of this live of an old school classic???
Don't get me wrong, it's well done. But it's too well done, the character you'd find with grittier production values is lost and the sound becomes fatiguing very quickly to my ears. The older albums don't suffer from this problem because whilst they're still very clean, there is a warmer sound to the records that is just great coupled with their music at the time. Aja is practically a masterpiece in this respect.
To be honest Ris i feel im lacking when it comes to listening to the production of an album...im sure you are too, but im too busy listening to everything else...unless it sounds really bad i dont really notice... are you saying it takes away some character from the music if the production isnt right?... give me some examples of two different sides of what your saying please... i would like to think if the music is good it will transend any production...if this track was recorded on tape i would still like it... i will add i certainly dont see it as a problem..just a difference in taste...
Thanks bubinga5, really appreciate your encouragement!! Hopefully, I will find a tutor in the new year!! Got some additional help at home. My big sis is a wiz at piano/ keyboard (she's the only one that can read music), my little sis sings with a jazz band as well as being a singing teacher (her boyfriend is a sax player). We are all involved in stage musicals, however I've had a longing to play bass for many years!!!! Just hope to stick with my bass. Long road ahead and all that, but enjoying it so far despite the hard reading. By the way, what are your fav cd's? Not the whole list, just a sample? Thanks again!!! Paul.
Paul...what i listen to i would say, is not important ..im a specialist, and thats only good if thats all you want to play...listen to as much music as possible and soak it up... all the musical groups...rock, funk, jazz, pop, latin... i will say though get some Steely Dan and study it.... get a good tutor...its great to be able to talk to a human when your learning..i just had a book that i couldnt ask questions to....a GOOD teacher is worth lots when it comes to learning...noticed i put the GOOD in higher case... i would encourage you to learn the piano too...it will make you a better musician...
