good god i sounded like a "ive played with a famous persons son and im a twat"....when i read that post.. what do i know about rock...not alot.. im not saying bashing isnt out of the Q...but there are times for both...ok sensitivity is the wrong word for the man..he still has some awareness of what was needed and what wasnt... i wonder if john could do a jazz gig.. Now that would be smokin.. -
anyone got doubts about the Sadowsky tone..oh yes its the Mezzoforte tune again...the "in the mix" sound is good enough imo.. but when he solos the Sadowsky tone its unbeatable..the slap and pop tone is very special. i love the sound of this bass...i will get another Sadowsky one day... i think it sounds as good outside the mix as in..poss the best distinctive super jazz sound available today IMO... ok you may not like the feel and it didnt feel right 'in the shop' what a crock of XXXX..in the right hands a sadowsky is a beast... just my $ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc4oPqmCbFA
I bought my Lakland 55-01 used for £400. It's a fantastic bass for that money. Hangs with anything under a grand (and to me it's better than the musicman stingray 5 i used to have). Also, if you can find one, there's the Cort RB5/Josh Paul signature. If you can handle the tight string spacing an Ibanez atk305 is worth a look too.
i agree..the 55-01 is a killer bass.. the Elrick/Cort is great aswell..both are great but the Laky tops it for feel i think....if you can get one for that money i will be very jealous..ive been after one...those basses are well up there...if you change the old bart pre and pups, i would even say they are up there with the USA Laklands..i know that sound obsurd but ive played both and there isnt that much between them.. i had a 55-01 with a nordstrand fatstack and another nordstrand pickup, i cant remember, with a glockenklang pre amp and it was way better than my Sei..that is in tone..

this is a perfect example of a band listening to each other...the band that i rehearsed for were erm...not like this...which is a sh*tt*r...oh well it was only stroud as shakin stevens said about Alan Partridge's biography "Lovely Stuff" ..
And imagine all the great records that wouldn't have been made if not for everyone bashing away. I'm reading Neil Young's biog at the moment, and no question, there's a guy who liked everyone to be bashing away, often without rehearsal (certainly after the mid 70's anyway). Always a thorny area for sure, but volume has it's place. C
Maybe i should have said in the context of the music of the music i like and that we were playing chris...ive been in a band playing led zep and even then there was a time to bash and a time for silence.... John Bonham bashed away, but he new when to and when not to...i was round his sons house about 6 months ago and he said he was really a very sensitive drummer when he was practicing... -
One of my pet grinds, this topic I've lost count of the times over the years where the situation has been; - Very little or no sensitivity to approaching how a note, a song or sound is initiated, expressed, the duration of the note - Very little attention is given to the team as a whole - Very little or no attention is given to letting the song breath. As a result, a wall of sound is produced that Phil Spector would have been proud of. This results in indifferent teamwork The casualty is quality. At the very start, each band member seems to be totally focussed on the next thing they are going to play or sing. NO ATTENTION APPEARS TO BE GIVEN TO ACTIVELY LISTENING TO EACH OTHER AND RESPONDING TO EACH OTHER'S CUES. I can count on one hand when this has not been the case and a band actually pays attention to 'light and shade'. The volume issue is secondary to these initial problems IMHO. If everyone is actively listening to each other, then the volume would tend to be appropriate to the given situation by default. I honestly don't believe it's unrealistic to have a vision of good musicianship as a pole star in a musical career. It certainly drives me on to aspire to better performances and ongoing attempts to materialise the concepts of; - Groove - Articulation - Technique - Emotion / feel - Dynamics - Tone - Phrasing - Appropriate rests, or space I don't often (if ever) get the lot together, but I keep trying to keep my eye on the ball. What drives me on ? the vision / dream / hope of that nirvana and the beauty when it all falls into place and the band works as one unit, in the moment. Those sweet moments will make it all worth it. T
this is the best posts ive ever read on Bass chat...it has nothing to do with the fact that i agree with it swear!!!!! -

im not really talking about live stuff..im talking about working out how we gell with each other...this was the first rehearsal that they were giving me and i was giving them... imagine you were recording and everyone was bashing away.... i wouldnt make love like that, so in turn i wouldnt make music like that...the two are very similar.. -
I agree about some people who seem to just listen to loud music for the sake of it being loud. I dunno whether they enjoy the vibrations or what but there is a point at which it really is just too loud to hear it!
this is great in a live situation but when you are trying to rehearse its not good for working out things...of course i love it loud..but when your trying to articulate musicians that work together as a well oiled machine, which is what it should be period.. its a hindrance.. im not a pro but i think when you got paying customers you should be tight.. -
Have you ever been in a band that just plays too loud....i went for a rehearsal recently that wanted to do some classic funk covers...i turned up and started playing with these guys, and everything and i mean everything was too loud...im a big believer in sensitivity, space and articulation when playing with anyone.in any musical situation....when i turn up to an audition, im auditioning them as well as them auditioning me...it seems to be one sided when doing this sometimes the drummer was bashing the sh*t out of the drums, the guitarist had a Gibson and was used to playing rock, so his rythm playing was anything but...The male singer didnt have a good voice, and was just belting them out...they told me there used to playing in rough pubs, not that that has anything to do with it...ok there may be a trained ear in the crowd but most are pissed of high and dont care...the only one i thought was good was the organist but he was lost in the mix.. on top of this they were pissed...i never play drunk...i have too much respect for the music...that and i cant play drunk. do you have to be a pro, to play with people who understand the dynamics of good music...maybe im missing the point? anyway i didnt enjoy playing with them...i had the Aggy very very loud, but struggled to get an audible bass note out of it......ive had friends who used to listen to music so loud, i thought they werent really interested in the music...just the effect of loud music.., and i could never understand it..ive always listened to music so i can hear it properly... ive never listened to music on my stereo very loud..i want to hear whats going on..ive have always analysed music, unless its at a party of something. IMO articulation and space and a bit more thought goes so far... i guess im being a snob and its just fun after all? i just like what i like...

bubinga5 replied to Herbie The Rad Dorklift's topic in Bass Guitars
Flats on a Pbass..i would say thats what you poss dont like..i love that tone, but i prefer a zingier tone....Put some DR high beams on the P bass...if that doesnt work for you get a Jazz ive played a Pbass with DR's or most roundwounds and it had that zing and it had the punch... -
