maybe it because his sound is front of the mix...for me enthusiasm and overplaying sometimes go hand in hand...too many fills for the groove for me..just my opinion

I cant say that i hate any basses..if they play well im there...i like the thought of taking a certain 'genre' associated bass and taking into another genre...Sometimes this is not possible..but ive always thought you could smoke a funk tune on a Riky...Im not that keen on the shape myself but i would still play one...Ive never been keen on the weight of Gibson basses but i still like em... Cheap and nasty basses arent good..im not talking cheap basses..im talking cheap basses that are just sold with no thought whatsoever to the end product, or the user... there just sh*te.. oh and vastly overpriced basses...although i wouldnt turn a free one away
Sounds to me like they are trying to deter people from asking for extras that are time consuming to make and distract them from building basses. Also, they have staff to pay a living wage in an expensive city, and probably expensive rent to pay in a prime Brooklyn location. This is the real world, not some far east sweat-shop.
Well Sadowsky dont charge these prices..and there from NYC...There is no reason other than Fodera are riding on a prestigious name...
-
just noticed the truss rod cover...wait for it...$499
-
ridiculous...sorry IMO, when luthiers charge these prices i think there just taking the piss...what makes a piece of plastic much more expensive than any other luthiers piece of plastic...

are these jam nights based around songs that every one knows or is it total improv, how does it work?
That's a fairly US-centric view, where they can't easily get the Rotos, or the Hofner, strings. LaBellas are hard to get over here, which why I use Roto 88s and GHS nylon flats. But Thomann carry them all (I think).
Labellas are easy to get in the UK from the great StringBusters...
Improved according to whom?
Sorry wrong spelling..i meant 'Improv' -
are you not in a band Golch.maybe try and get involved...IMHO..more basses arent the answer..the answer lies in wanted to make music or play music with the bass... absence makes the heart grow fonder, so maybe a break will do your love of playing some good

We are like bus drivers, and I do not want to get on a bus with a bus driver who likes to improvise. i dont think there is any thing wrong with playing an improved part out of vanity, as long as that vanity doesnt overtake the song...i love to hear great bassist showing off from time to time and so do some of the audience... -
I've been remiss in not making it clear in my OP that I mean in a live setting. So if you play in a "popular music" type band, when is a good time to improvise on stage? And what is the reason for your improvisation?
i think its really hard to say..depends on the song... I think the reasons, if im honest are mostly to satisfy what i think would sound good..there are not too many out there that listen to the bass alot,.. i think that changes depending on the genre being played...i was watching Julian Crampton play and evryone was clapping when he had finished a little improv whatever....ok it was Julian Crampton, but more people are aware of bass than you think... some people wont even notice youve improvised, but some will....you can bet some audience members wouldnt notice if say a piano, or trumpet improvised...but it doesnt stop musicians doing... its all about having fun IMHO...of course this is hopefully all in good taste and not to the detrement of the song and largening of the ego... -
Unfortunatley Andy the GAS is a life long illness which has no cure...you cant stop the symptoms, but an Alleva would certainly slow them down.. .. Personally i think a bass like that is worth getting...it really depends on how well you gel with it.....the bummer is IMO it takes time to gel with an instrument...

Improvisation on Bass - Completely Pointless
Is there a point? Unless you play jazz I can't see one. The occasional inspired extra note here and there, sure, but studying improvisation on a bass!?! It seems ridiculous. Learn to cook instead, it's much more useful and pleasing for other people. It sounds like a recipe for cheating your audience to me. Only musicians will feel any "magic" happening, and that magic will be VERY rare. The audience won't get it anyway, and why not compose something beautiful in the first place. For me, improvisation on a bass is for jazz and pompous tits who convince themselves it's entertaining. I wish they would realise NO-ONE GIVES A sh*t.
You may not care, but lots do, including lots of the audience....its not for everyone granted... i will sometimes throw in a line that is totally improv, but it is not mantained...its maybe a line running into another chord...maybe you mean 10 min improvisations? Even then if its good i will listen.. where is your creative side? -
i live not far up the road..where are we talking?
