Had a quick scan...looking to find foolproof bass setup guide
bubinga5 replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
the only things ive ever needed to set up a bass are a pozi, and allen keys and a metal engineers ruler... the rest of my kit contains side cutters, a tuner, polish, fret board cleaner, a vernier, and a cloth...oh also a head torch and a draw full of snap on tools, oh plus a multi meter and some glue..did i mention my tool belt with router and a lathe?? and a pencil behind my ear -
I think this is more like 'Miles with Miller'. Miles had the arse with his record company through this period and let Miller write and play almost everything, just turning up to record his parts. I have nothing with Miller on - don't really like his 'thing' and seeing his name on a cd cover puts me off buying. Great player, crap music
Bilbo im suprised at your "crap music" comment....music is in the eye of the beholder, a musician of you experience should know that.. if he didnt slap would you look at him differently?
that's interesting. i'm not familiar with the history of his signature bass - i thought they started around 1998. thats 81/82. could it be it's his fender jazz which have been modified by sadowsky?
his signature bass was based on a 70's jazz bass...some say its a 75 but i believe its a later model a 77.....also the original electronics were Bartolini not Sadowsky..(i could be wrong on this) this may have changed later? not sure of the plate he had fitted to house the electronics...would love to know... i will find out from my erm...source

Is a Gibson Les Paul bass a good deal for £500?
bubinga5 replied to Dogame's topic in General Discussion
sorry bro i disagree with the 'Squire eating a Les Paul alive'...ive played both and the Les Paul is a power house..the early ones were an awsome bass, but heavy...they are a bit of a one trick pony yes, but it really depends on how you play it...i can get some funky sxxt out of one.. i could be wrong but this should have bartolini pickups...and as i said check the weight, they were heavy back then.. you all prob seen this before but like i said its the way you play it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4151Xvhje4 -
Great clip man but you'll kick off the 'Marcus is great/sh*t', 'I love/hate his hat' debate, which seems to rage endlessly on basschat!
yeah i know..never heard the hat one though...

i would go for the JO...didnt like the pre in the MM, but played one with an east and it rocked..the Fender standard is a great bass..but i think the Laky is a better buy...Sandberg also..dont forget used basses..i also love the KSD jazzes, there fantastic.. BTW its the single coils on the MM that are noisy, the pre is just a little harsh.. stu did you ever sell the Moon?

thats a tricky one...depends how much you like the SR5's tone...i had one and loved it...The sadowsky will give you a better return though...
How would you value the basses, price-wise....? At a guess, I'd think the RV4 would be £1800 plus, and the DJ4 about £800...?? The Sadowsky would need to be REALLY REALLY spot on considering the competition around that price...??
well i think there all over priced but then i never buy new and never would...The sadowsky was very good, but i remember when they were -1500...i would never pay 1800..im suprised they sell any to be honest... I reckon the Lakland 44-01 is well worth the new price, just such a capable bass for a grand..its only the Sadowsky's unique tone that stands them apart. not £800's worth though.......the laky's tone is still IMHO awsome...Laklands are great value...that would be my choice -
just sharing what funk soul you may not of heard.. Erykah's version of Chaka's Stay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryLzh5Wfu7w Marcus Miller in true modern R&B stylee...with lallah hathaway on backing.... Infatuation....when it gets going, his playing on this is smokin..shows musical slap at his best.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FES8lmPufcI My favorite album of all time with the master Jackson on bass... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNArTCG6j2A Apart from 'between the raindrops' this my favorite Steely D tune..Mega cool funk with the masters of musical perfection..love the guitar break in this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olbmJMJA4Lc There is not much that moves me like this band...not a popular tune...but 'Cant let Go' when it gets going is a superb EWAF song. everything is good about this..groove, harmony, singing, bass playing....always wondered what it would sound like wth stevie wonder doing guest vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLetyIPrbEc Gene Harris ala Stevies 'AS'...wonderful take on this classic..the bass playing is cool as fxxk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b20pX_9F8vI When i first started playing bass i found Billy Cobham, i have lots of his stuff, but for me this is his best best groove......awsome!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN9Vaml0dZE...feature=related Stratus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYH4PC710ac you prob seen this before but its fantastic.. i love george duke hes the man...i also love Lee Ritenour..hes an amazing guitarist.. masters at work..
No that's not really what I meant (although it's a good point and probably true). I mean when you hear someone put in a stand-out bass take, you can hear that they are enjoying it, you can hear that they're familiar with that style of music and they've created an authentic sound but at the same time their own take on it - not just stringing together a bunch of cliche licks and coming up with some JobFinder / Casio auto-rhythm version of the beat or whatever. I also think it's pretty disrespectful to the great artists of any given genre to suggest that you can do what they do and also what everybody else does in all other genres, and be authentic at all of it, without caring about it or listening to it in any detail. It's nonsense really.
i agree with you..but im sure there are guys that feel lot of different styles, and do it very well...thats what makes them great session players... Willie Weeks, Chuck Rainey, Nathan East are masters at this..but i guess that what makes them greats...

jamie..the first thing i will say is dont let the bad experiences of the band get in the way of your playing and enjoyment of music...the bad experience is not music..dont let your love for playing bass be damaged by this ( i pressume) politics .. seems like quite a intense thing you have gone through...dont sell your gear...i would say have a bit of time to think about it, then make a decision... keep it on the side line, unless you really need to sell for financial reasons..i was in dire straits a while ago...everything went but my bass gear...at the end of the day its your call, and its your passion...if it is your passion, dont let it go... if you dont mind me asking what was the bad experience? i was in a situation where i was being pressured to sell my Sei...i literally would have slept rough than sell my basses, thats how much i feel about them...sounds silly i know, but i have such a connection with my gear....remember gear is easy to loose but to save up for new gear takes a mile and a half
I've done the money thing so for now I'm just playing what I want. Having experience of other styles of music certainly helps the writing process though. Love Nathan East BTW. Probably my biggest influence for the last few years.
Nathan East one of the best...i loved his playing with Anita Baker..it was just (at the time, and now) the best ive ever heard....a totally amazing soul(at the time) bassist...he has so much...did you read the interview in BG??
I think you can usually tell when a musician doesn't really like the music they're playing. If you're playing music that you wouldn't actually listen to in your own time, it's obvious. Over the years I have played in bands that span many different genres but in each case it's been music that I like a lot. I couldn't do a Top 40 band or a country band or a rock band because my heart wouldn't be in it. So for me it's not a case of "stylistic or versatile", it's more a case of soul or no soul.
Bro is this a live thing..i mean can you tell by there body language?
For me,the album version wins every time. I think everything about it is better, from the bass to the vocal delivery and especially the break after the chorus, which although they are cool on the single, because this was the song that got me into Jamiroquai (and I listened to that album to death)the first time I heard the breaks on the single, later on,I was like "Huh?". So yeah.... Album version.
Doddy on a side Q...do you think Mr X worked out every fill? or round abouts the structure
-
Yes...fantastic basses..what you can get them for is stupid...pro bass for not pro money...spend a bit more on pre and pups and it will knock most basses out...i had a 55-01 with nordstrands and a glock pre and the tone was better than my Sei..
-
this has been debated before ive been asked to play some Jamiroquai in a band soon.. not sure if they want to do athe long version or the single version... ..just wondering what SpaceCowboy bass line you like best..(not that i would lift them).....for me Mr X's bass line is (ok busier) but far superior in melodic playing, to the single version..ive always thought it was RHT...something about the melodic fills and mastery ive heard so many times... its played on a 5 also....i asked Bluey at an Incognito (meet Bluey time) concert, if Randy Hope Taylor played on this track and he just smiled and said nothing...hmmm.. but it could be all in my imagination.. here is both...i do love the simpler Zender playing though..by the way the vid with Zender on the Warwick is sooo cool..but the album bass playing is sublimely intuitive bass playing... Single Version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcSChVOEa9Q Album Version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRYVODHgKY0...t=1&index=9
Screw versatility. I have no interest in being able to play 100 different styles which are only any good for music I don't really like. I've stuck with what I like and what I'm good at and will continue to hone those stylistic skills. It might be because I see myself first and foremost as a composer/songwriter and a bassist/guitarist/synth player second. For me the song is the most important thing and I only really feel comfortable and interested writing in styles that I like. The bands and songwriters that I like most tend to have a "tunnel vision" about their music which is what I think gives them their edge. IMO there's a danger in versatility overshadowing your individuality. The few bass players that I admire as players both have extremely unique musical voices - Mick Karn and Peter Hook. That's what I look up to.
this is my thinking in a nutshell...i guess my love for Meshell springs to mind...i also write...from the piano comes a style, and its a keys version of the bass in my mind, but with chords, but the dynamics are still there.. i also think that anyone who concentrates on a certain style/passion/genre def has a certain edge in there playing..but then again it depends on the talent ...just look at Miller...he was/is a sessions guy for a long time... there is no defining answer to this...as always someone will enlighten me with there wisdom...thats why i love everyone on BC.. i have respect for both..
-
i have always had a certain style...i could never be a session guy as i just dont enjoy playing music other than what im passionate about...i just dont dig it...i can play rock, reggae, but i cant be enthusiastic about it...maybe i need to grow up...
