1. these dont come up very often...IMHO the original pre is good and these basses are the best of Fender...smokin bass.. whats the weight Charla?
2.
You would if you were a chef. Same thing.
..he does it for a profession..doesnt mean he loves the taste
3.
It’s all music and you’re not listening to it you’re playing it. That’s a completely different thing. I can't read well enough and I'm not a "one take wonder", but I've loved the recording that I've done and would have liked to have done much more. It certainly beats spending a day in an office!! Paul Turner can back Take That one day and Jay Kay the next, Herbie Flowers can play semi classical pieces with John Williams in Sky and Ever Lasting Love, Pino can play with anyone and make them sound good! There’s nothing “second class” about pop sessions.
I wasnt suggesting all pop is lame... to your first point.. yes it is all music, but i play what i listen too,,i wouldnt bake an apple pie with love if i didnt like apple pie....that where passion comes from...i cant play stuff i dont dig
4. Just wanted to know how many of you girls/guys can really adapt to any style...myself i have been in bands from Rock, Reggae, to Pop..along the way ( to the misfortune of many, now friends..)i came to conclusion that i just cant do these styles...For bad or worse most of my life i have listened to hardcore techno, Gabba and arabian country music.. but seriously its been mostly Soul, Funk, JazzFunk, Disco, Hip Hop..i didnt mean it to be that way, its just my personality i guess and what spoke to me most, rhythmically and harmonically ..without wanting to blow my own trumpet, i feel do have a flair for the feel of it..... i do delve into stuff like Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, etc but because i dont know any modern Rock etc i think i lack....(although i do like the Foo Fighters, Primus and the Editors etc). to be honest i find most pop to be useless, unless its something really original..., .Radio 1 i find tedious...in particular certain R&B Dance, that seems like the voice has been altered in a way that it sound like the singer can change voice direction like a gospel singer..(ive just been in a car listening to N Dubs)..its horrible in many ways...sorry if this offends..it only my opinion... Anyways i guess im indoctrinated to certain styles, and because i dont listen to too many styles i dont care for, i would be useless in a session enviroment..coupled with the fact that i dont read...(at the moment).my point is can some of you out there adapt to anything... if so, is it because you listen to everything, or is it just talent and subconscious listening..or have you forced yourself to play music you may not like too much to get work....
5. where is the best place to buy MIJ fenders from now?
6. No no no... this is Jazz bass growl....played lower on the E string, gets the growl goin even more IMHO its both pups up..the back pup sound is burp not growl.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9eydCfTdw...feature=related
7. Nice bass...love Billy Cox's playing too..have a bump
8.
Dunno about you, but, personally, I wouldn't go into this sort of stuff, if I couldn't read.. You never know, who's gonna happen, do you?
Well i dunno about you, but that might be an opportunity missed..there is lots of brilliant opportunities that dont involve reading...i would even say more so.. I will prob learn to read for the bass soon though as im learning to read with the piano
9. Bartolinis all the way..
10. Unless you really want to i wouldnt go new...you can get a worl class instrument for a grand second hand...A few Sei's have gone for a grand, ish and the Devon Jazz that was on here was a grand... If i was going to buy new it would be the new Fender deluxe... Second hand now i would get a MIJ Jazz with Aguilar pups and a Audere pre
11.
Playing Latin? I would love to get such a invitation myself.. Anyway, wattabout reading, I think, that most cruise gigs are based on reading, mate, so, if you don't have your reading chops going, it not worth going for that, eh..
Well its a band in Bristol who have got a cruise gig and i dont think reading is necessary...
12. Has anyone got any experience of bands on cruise ships? i have been asked if i would like to play Latin music on a caribbean cruise, but know nothing about it? what is the money like???...i dont really have any ties at the moment... i dont think there is any reading involved... any thoughts...
13. does Mark King know about your affections towards him...
14. i can see where your coming from, but the point is, just because some of MK's lines are harder to play it doesnt mean they are technically/musically superior....there is no musically superior.. i think maybe you are using the wrong words...maybe technically 'more difficult to play', but musically superior..no.... i say this in a nice way, but who are you to say that MK's note choices, phrases are better than Flea's..you could play some of L42's lines and nail them but you might fluff one of Fleas parts because you dont have the feel... i can bet you that a session player would tell you the same...i will bet my Sei on it just to add MK's playing in 'the sun goes down' is frickin awsome....great staccato finger style bass playing..this is what i like to hear MK playing,,no slap to be seen..i cant deny how good this is the sound quality is better on this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE4rqIrTFqc This for is MK's simple slap in groove central..nothing flashy, just great slap for the music...and a great british jazzfunk cut http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7mnrhGFzs8 This is also very cool playing...Specifically at 3.25 onwards...totally different style to MK, its not as clean as MK but you cant deny he got funk..might be something to do with the basses and effects also... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khfv_5Dyb1k like someone said tis a very odd comparison...in an extreme way, its like comparing Victor Wooten to Paul Mcartney...
15.
Oh please, don't patronise me. It is quite possible that I have been playing longer than you've been alive. You are attempting to present opinions as fact, that's all.
Rich stop me if i have said this before but i saw you with the Soul Destroyers in Gloucester....cant remember the bass you were playing but you tore it up with a slap solo...i spilled my pint over my sister trying to get a better view...frickin loved it...(she didnt)
16. Just chiming in with some new soul funk....you prob heard these but i DIG them.. this woman is the bomb...Alice Russell... All Alone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS8yNg07X2c You may know this...Mamas Gun Lets Find a Way.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mgDzzaL5pE hope you like
17.
If you've been playing for any amount of time or are any kind of decent musician you will know the Level 42's records are musically and technically superior to RHCH just by listening.
this is nonsense.... oldslapper is spot on....ive been playing bass for a long time and im a decent bas player..and i dont agree with that bold statement... you need to stand back from your love of L42 and see a bigger picture....im betting you just mean bass...do you play drums, guitar, etc...because for you to know if L42's music is far superior you would have to know these instruments inside out also... As a bass player you could say that MK is more technical (and although i love MK's playing) it doesnt make it better... Meshell Ndegeocello is not a technical player but for groove (which is vital) she could blow both of them away...but this is just my taste not fact!
18. This has got to be a joke...he says its a refin from back in 1964?...the price is stupid... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...B:WNAFP:GB:1123
19.
You're probably right though mate my girlfriend is a munter.
Ha ha..well i havent even got one so i will fold
20.
Doesn't do anything for me. I'm not an upright player but on the second vid he can't swing for sh*t. To me it's just another Jaco Jazz clone, technical ability or not. His touch is heavy handed and he rakes almost everything going down the strings. And get away from that bridge pickup! To those that say they could never reach this standard, or couldn't hope to play that well - all he did was woodshed technique and licks. Anyone can do it if they put the practice in.
he would prob be horrified to hear that..like i said its only a vid, and possible just a section of his playing..hes prob a monster player otherwise.... ive seen Marlowe Dk do this sort of messing/noodling...says it all
21. this guy does it/explains it well...you can do this also with the thumb index finger, middle, ring finger..spacing it where needed between notes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxdKgMVAPGg
22. This jazz has it all.....lovely lovely bass..its got a lovely warmth that alder gives...sorry if i missed it but whats the weight Rich?
23.
Is it a NYC Sadowsky? Excuse me if Ive missed that....
Its an RV so its a Metro.. would love to see em... thats what we do, drool and then choose!! the OW sounds interesting with the Sadowsky pre.. what are the pups..does the Sad have VTC.. come on put em up going blind i would go for the Sadowsky..i know em and i dont know OW's
24.
+1 He's a really good bassist, who in a band/live context would (hopefully) be great, the 'musical content' of this vid is a bit disembodied as he's neither playing a tune as a solo piece or over some form of backing - his lines are extremely well executed and his slap and tap are solid... but since when does playing 'triplets' make anyone a dickhead?
Playing triplets in themselves doesnt make anyone a dickhead, but overdoing them does...IMO any flashy technique over played is not in the interest of the listener...i can play triplets in slap or finger, but in a song or bass line i would prob play one once,.. if that..its a feature... like i said this guy is prob different in a band situation and holds down the groove like mofo, and its only a vid, its not his whole musical repertoire... there are many ways of looking at bass playing and music, IMHO.. two of which i seem to disagree/agree with..the former is someone who see's bass playing as his/her platform to show what he/she can do..nowt wrong with it, we all like to show off what we can do. but lets see if you have a musical sensibility.. The latter is someone who is a little shy.. (no not there personality) they are very capable of runs and awsome slap but will only let it out when really needed...when you only hear a wicked phrase, run or triplet once, it makes it so much more special IMO.. i feel so much more respect from this type of player.. people like Victor Wooten are both of these...especially Marcus Miller...trouble is we dont get to hear or see it much excuse the waffle just my mind spilling out on Mac..
