Hi people...im maybe looking to wire my pickups on my jazz bass into series, as im looking for a bit more lowend...has anyone done this..if so could they give explain what i need to do...for a dummy.. what will i lose in tonal options by doing this? thanks

There has always been a time i thought i needed lessons.... there is always something to learn no matter how good you are..finding a good teacher is the pain..im a big believer that through the mine field that is teaching yourself, you find your own style, (bad habits and all).. more than you might be, being taught..BUT...getting a balance between that and getting knowledge from a source of more experience is the key... i agree with Velvet, like i said there is always something to learn..depending on your aspirations..IMHO there are no boundries when it comes to music..a bit like maths but its from your soul.. you only need lessons if you feel you want to...having lessons are only one avenue..i started learning piano a while ago and its opened up my musical mind no end...im a better player for it...IMO its way better than having lessons on one instrument... Chordal knowledge unlocks everything else..and i bet it will make you a better all round bassist
I like that a lot - nice gig. Weren't you on here getting all despondent a few days back? If so, nice to see it's all panned out for you.
Yes bro i was that bassist...i cant go to any rehearsals if im not really into the music..which i have done and its tedious and unfair on them and me....although i love the feel, even straight up funk i find lacking in harmonic and melodic presence...... there is something about the mix of jazz/funk/soul i dig..prob why i love Disco so much....i could never be a session guy... thanks for the kind word's

there are hand configurations that (your) hands dont feel comfortable doing...its the brain hand coordination thing..these are the lines that if you master, will give your paws more dexterity and give you more ideas...thats the great thing about learning from CD's of your fav band.. why am i telling you guys?? try Groove Collective's 'Sneaky'...Thats fairly hard to get around..at that speed...i got it but dont come natural..check it out at 5.10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vSz7GRyujw Rhythm Stick is awsome...wonderfull bass line..i could listen to it all day...fairly simple really, those 16th's over changes are the bugger...awsome bass player...

What do you want from your Fender clones?
bubinga5 replied to karlthebassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah i would so buy two Fender's for the price of a Metro... -
I don't see the point in live albums, generally. Primus' "Suck On This" is pretty cool, but it wasn't a vanity live record, it was one of the only recordings of Primus you could get. I like studio albums, they show what a band can do in a studio. I like live performances, you get a one-night-only version. I'd rather live stays live and it's for the people who were there.
im presuming you are giving a comparison...if not i like your later...they do both...

I have quite a few studio albums by various artists, but the ones i enjoy most are the live ones...they have so much more atmosphere... albums that spring to mind are Donny Hathaways 'these songs for you' LIVE...this is prob me and my sisters favorite album of all time...you only have to listen to hear how good this band are with Willie....never mind Donny's voice..IMO the best soul voice ever recorded...true gospel power and control..as a song writer Stevie is the man, but when it comes to voice Donny Blows him away IMO..who knows what Donny would have come to had he lived past his age of unfortunate death....wonderful talent... the best bass playing ive ever heard....Willie Weeks reminds me of James Jamerson here..behold Willies playing....man does he play this soo well..he bounces around this song like a magician..on a P too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogNnJk3xOh0 The other is Maxwell's Live and Unplugged...friggin love it....he really is the father of street soul.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJbNJJNDdUU The last is what im listening to now...Erica Badu Live...i love this album so much..from cover's of Roy Ayers's 'Searchin' to the wonderfull 'Tyrone'....check out her lyrics....the best track is the Heatwave's Boogie Night's.that turns into Jones Girls classic....the walking bass is great but when it kicks in it's f***in cool.. Tyrone live... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVSIPHQdQT0 any one got any other live albums to check..soul funk or not..
In terms of sound, I've been far more impressed with Laklands than I have with the Fenders I've tried. Lakland have managed to nail a really nice, growly, warm, consistent sound from their instruments. I was seriously considering switching to Laklands before I spotted my beat up Celinder Update J ('Ol No. 2).
would you say your more of an active guy CK?... -

dont be modest bro..For me simple grooves are where the best bass playing is played...i see so many gospel players that make me feel inadequate, but as you know, the beauty of electric bass is in its simplicity, in the context of a song... i personally think Fender will make ground financially just by the look of the new deluxe range, although if the preamp isnt cooking, the masses will buy one then put in Low End, Aguilar, JE pre's .... i agree JTUK, my Sei J5 is superb and surely awsome....why i put it for trade i dont know..the feel of the instrument is something else...silky smooth J bass..just gotta get it out of a studio.. -
thanks for posting..sounds as good as it looks..i got gas for that bass

What do you want from your Fender clones?
bubinga5 replied to karlthebassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Surely that specialness comes from the player.there only instruments for a purpose.. no matter what you got....tis always great to be unique i know.. i used to think that i wouldnt own a Fender for that reason but i played one and fell in love with the sound. i turned up with the Sei J at a rehearsal ive been going to and they wanted the Fender back..better for there sound i guess.. -

yes lets see what the new deluxe preamp is like..if it aint its a shame but cats will swap them out for better anyway.....they should do a limited run of sexy tops to shake things up IMO...they could steal sooooo much of the market if they just got exciting!! they just dont seem to look at bass guitar making like the other clones...but maybe thats the point.. i would hate to see Fender loose that vibe they have...and feel they want to retain that to a degree also seems to me that Fender Japan are way more exciting in the colour etc dep
