1. and the doctor calls... CK, do you have any recommendations of what i should look out for? what sort of winding/design, give a low end resonancy peak..im in awe of some BC'ers knlowledge
2.
hmmm interesting. I like splits for the hum-cancel but can't see why they would have less low down grunt. Maybe your examples did have, but I think a winder can make the pickups do anything he wants..with the amount of winds he uses and the gauge of coil. My preference is for a single case, less winds but thicker coil as this, IMV, gives the sound a chance to display more character as opposed to more winds being a more powerful pickup and therefore being more coloured bass-wise. I only say this as I had KA wind me some examples and he was telling me about the work he did for other pup makers. I had a massive humbucker which was LOUD but souless..and then I also had him copy his work for a few name makers and their tone was far superior to my ears... not louder, but superior. If coupled with a pre, this is ALWAYS the route I would take... I think you can add bass but never take it off so I start there. FWIW.. I have KA pups with an East pre and the thump I get from that is unbelievable ..and it fills out the mix really really well. But for pure sound, I prefer the Barts and East. That is just my take on it all...
Just get the feeling my Jazz could have a little more depth and low down punch...it a complicated issue as im sure there are a few issues that could be the deciding factor...IE..strings i use DR MM's... amp i use a 212....why is there not a bass doctor who you can take your bass to for a checkup.. i am toying with putting a pre in it but not really sure i want to... i wish i had infinate knowledge on these things... i do think of giving J Shuker or M Peterson a call, but i dont/wouldnt want to waste there time...
3. Can anyone say if there is any difference in tone from single coil to split coil pickups.(apart from hum canceling) ...my specific Q is do split coil pickups take away any low down grunt...i played a few jazzez today with single coil pups and they seem to have more bass than my CS with Nordstand splits.... im wondering if i should change my Nordies for some singles...any thought's?
4. Im working in Chester at the moment and went into Dawsons music about half an hour ago....They got a few basses, but i wanted to play a 2010 Fender...Tried a squire in Lake Placid blue that was ok...Looked fabulous...Then i picked up the Fender and loved it...A lovely off white with a killer tone... Then the guy asked me to check out an unknown (to me) bass by Farida.. I sh*t you not i was blown away...Way better tone than the Fender...The best passive jazz ive ever heard....I just couldnt believe how good this bass sounded..very big output, the growl on this thing was immense,..awsome honk when rolling off the front pup...strangly it didnt seem to thin out the tone........i would go as far to say it sounded better than my Custom shop... the swamp ash body prob helps...the bass didnt sound harsh in any way, very smooth creamy sound.... And the price...£380 or there abouts....apparently there made by the same people who make Squires...i was so impressed im thinking about buying one....They look a little like Jag's with the shorter bottom horn... anyone tried one? 5.
I'd thoroughly recommend either:- i) Bass gallery ii) Bass Direct Both staright up, direct and A1+ service.
+1.... both great shops.... I found Mark at BD very helpful indeed...i also bought a bass from the Gallery and the service was first class...
6. Seriously Mel.....you can understand why your first post was a little baffling and unspecific... You would prob get a gig if you told us a little more...
7.
£250 makes me very sad! I dont remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was in the region of £300-400 six years ago! was hoping that it would keep its value as they're not made anymore and are very good bass's. And I found out my mesa 400+ is more poorly than I thought today! not good
Not many basses keep there value...why would they?
8. Oh yes.. Fantastic Alexander O'neil and Cherelle song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDVzaTMF-ps Micheal Mcdonald...ok not really funk or groove, but its still great http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SykNSv-1Dks HeatWave....Just an awsome tune this....takes its time but its worth it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwLgsTejbiA
9. Never..there is too much to learn
10.
Then check out Talkbass for some extremely unhappy customers.
yeah seen this... but its not a dead cert that fclef has done any wrong...seems to me Fclef built the guy a bass.... the guy has changed his mind at the last minute on a bass he wanted to change the headstock on...and george (fclef) has kept his money...i could be wrong and would think twice about ordering a bass, but i havent read the latest on it. and its a matter thats not yet sorted on both sides....
11. what jazz bass is Marlowe playing here..i guess its a vintage..how is he getting that low down punch? is it the way the used to wind the pups? its got a warmth to it that so nice...rosewood board? 12. Love the name,... love the little speaker grills...fantastic...
13. Im thinking about maybe changing the U Retro in my Sei for something a little simpler...although its great its more than what i need..i would also like a pre with a little more aggression in tone... i am worried though because obviously i have two holes drilled for the small switches on the U Retro system....can anyone give me some advice/ideas on what i could do.... thanks my your quick...TA..
14. loads of WOW's.. One of these Nordstrands is for sale at Bass Direct.. The others are F Clef basses...check out the website for some awsome audio samples...
15. You got so much scope in that price range....Its the sort of price range where MOST.. of the top builders price there top of the line basses....even some of the hyper basses are in your price range second hand..Ken Smith, Celinder, Alleva, etc.. I personally would write a list of stuff you do love on a bass... and stuff that you dont like..then with that list wittle down what comes into line with what you want...Or if your going custom communicate this with the builder... or the other way, is to go out and try as many different basses as possible..then with all that knowledge under your belt, take it from there.....Myself i would look at Nordstrand, Sei...Martin Peterson is a genius... I think its great to name loads of amazing instrument makers, but you would be suprised at how many you dont like...there all very different.. Your welcome to try my Sei J5 if your ever down this way...
16.
ha some mixed opinions i guess, what do people mean when they say mim jazz? also ive never heard of the classic series to be honest are they nice? also in reply to bubinga5 "i have a jazz...i swapped the USA pups for Nordstrand NSJ4se's and it blows me away...amazing the difference.." how much did it cost to get that done and get the pick ups and stuff ect and also too russfm what type of music do u play with it and stuff cheers for all the replys guys everyones always quality on this site
Ok,...BH.. MIM means made in mexico....The Nordstrand's cost me £200 and put them in myself..very easy to do with a soldering iron..the standard jazz is a great instrument, but the pups IMHO, arent the best voice for it... with all Fender (although newer are better) try before you buy...
17. I often play in the dark so i cant see the instrument...i prob look a bit odd but its a great way of training your ear... your ears are your eyes as someone famous said?
18. I was listening to this album tonight...me and my sister over the years have always thought this album was very very good..way better than any acid jazz albums of the time, and for which it became associated with..ie Galliano, BNH, JTQ, etc.... for me and sis it was a very special album of music that was way more original than anything else out there,.. for those who may not know im going to waffle...Carleen Anderson, who eventually had her own album 'True Spirit' which was a gem. ( among other amazing things)was the singer of this awsome band..with Masta Ace, Maceo P, and Fred Wesley as contributers. they were recording in Paul Wellers studio also... Tis really a short lived band that are very engrained in my mind...Very funky..very original.using funk and a hip hop of the times tht was just so cool.. lots of you people know this stuff anyway.. imo the best YD tune.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cXKGzqq99Y Her solo stuff...amazing.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJuYjUZvsLA Brand New Heavies doing ...Apparrently Nothing with C Anderson..Fantastic...that is a freakin awsome lookin SB jazz Andrew is playing.. Check out Chris Ballin from incognito's Beneath the Surface album on backing V..and That geezer on the piano?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u_UL19ZI2Y...feature=related
19. The bottom line is..do you need it//do you enjoy playing a 6/7...i really enjoyed my old TRB..sonically it was amazing....did i need it...No.. Would i get another 6 yeah...to be honest i loved the Yamaha, was maybe more than i needed, and was heavy, but why not have that range..it sounded awsome with so much punch and grind...you dont have to use the 2 extra...no more flying down the FB
20.
just wondering what the differences are between the standard jazz and p basses and the deluxe versions other than them being active and haveing the extra controls and wether there worth the extra money in ur opinions cheers thanks in advannnnnnnnnnnce
i cant talk for P basses but... personally..and i mean personally... the standard Jazz bass is way better..the US deluxe is IMHO a not very nice J bass shape..they have scooped the lower horn, and i dont really like it..its like taking a ferrari and chopping off the bumper... i played a US Deluxe Jazz, it did sound really nice..and had a nice slap tone.. but i didnt like the pre. the pups are ok on a standard or Deluxe, but they could be better......IMHO..its not what fender really concentrate on like smaller builders like LF, Bart, or Nordstrand do......... ..A fender jazz is a great sounding bass anyway but it can sound better depending on your taste i guess.. I would go for the standard Jazz...as pure a bass as you can get these days...if you want active, there are a lot of options to give you a killer super jazz sound,... passive or not........depending on your cash budget.. i have a jazz...i swapped the USA pups for Nordstrand NSJ4se's and it blows me away...amazing the difference.. So i would say no...IMO..although the US Deluxe jazzers are lovely, they are not worth the extra £...If your savy... you can get so much more for your £ for a sick Jazz... i would go for a MIJ P or J...they are just as good as the US instruments at a fraction of the price...if not more consistent... throw in some active/passive pups, or a sexy pre you got a serious sounding jazz bass
21. In my limited experience.. Do you need a ERB in the music you are playing..i see you play a Jazz in your avatar Do you mind the extra weight that some bring...my TRB was heavy for more than an hour of playing... as i said, I had a Yamahs TRB6, and it was awsome...but for me at the time, was too many strings...i just didnt need the high C...how much range do you need for the music your playing...do you solo alot...not that a 6, 7, 8 should be seen as just that..wonderfull groovin goes on with an ERB... i like to think of a ERB as a bass for everything..groove, chord's, solo,..for those who feel comfortable usin em,... mostly because of the nature of making such a beast..and arent that cheap..are amazing sounding instruments, with way more sonic range than my Jazz.....wish i still had my TRB...incredible instrument for how much i paid for it.. would really like to try one again though..and i would prob look at Yamaha or Conklin Would love a Low End 6 Jazz...or a F Bass BN6..or the rest of these wonders of the 6 string world...that KS has got to sound incredible!!!
