3. maybe wanting to trade my Sei 5 string jazz. this is a very special instrument...ive played Nordstrand's, Sadowsky's, Low End's, Celinder's, and this is up there if not better than them..ok maybe not Celinder.. Swamp ash body Superb figured, Olive wood top Birdseye maple neck, with matching headstock Bartolini J pickups John East U Retro pre amp Brazilian rosewood FB Top spec fully adjustable ABM bridge Matching swamp ash electronics cover this bass sings and has superb punch...the j east is very adaptable...the slap tone is killer, and is why i love Bartolini pickups....it has a very slim neck and is slick...not sure of the weight but its light,,poss about 8.5 pounds.. the only reason i maybe want to trade is i want something different...im very cautious about letting this go as its way up there with the best depending on your personal pref...anyway....show me what you got.. the one thing that stands out for me apart from the tone, is the fit and finish...just mind boggling attention to detail...the neck pocket is the tightest ive ever seen on any instrument...this really is the best of the best when it comes to super jazz basses..
4. Nice one! there is a great version of Kid Charm (cant spell the rest) on it i believe..absolutely amazing!!!!!
5.
A drummer I play with a lot around here in Belgium had the pleasure to play with Chaka during one concert and she brought Gouch along. He was floored by this bass player and he said that it's amazing how a bass-player could be so busy on his instrument and yet hold a tight groove.
Yeah for sure..he plays soo many notes but what he plays are just super super tight. and flow so well with the song...from chord to chord he is siblime..that MTD 6 sounds amazing..... you can see why is sought after as a session player..
6. just thought i would throw this out...anyone dig this band? this sh*t is the sh*t!! i love the GangStarr samples at the end... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_onSxFNZMUU
7. WOW J, thankyou for that i wonder if its on I Tunes?
8. just wanted to share this..the love of my life......just supreme...looks like Gouche on bass duties as usual...i got to say his playing is out of this world..!!! IMHO i dont think many players can touch Gouche and the other gospel players for out and out master... He can fly around that board with most amazing note choices and natural intuition ive ever heard..his playing is driving the music so much.. A true master on the bass that man. .if i could play/listen to any one music for the rest of my life, this is it...just wonderfull groove, epic singing, backers,drumming..this must have been so inspirational to see live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynGoVm-gY90
9.
What a great fu*king track!
for real Pete, thats one cool tune....as much as i love GO GO, doesnt touch Maceo....but there all on the same team i guess.!!! this has been seen before i guess....the best funk ive heard!!! what a tone hes gettin from that BC Rich..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABLwmYI09Lw
10. Blimey ive never seen one of these before!!! one off for sure..
11. i really appreciate the thought that sight reading gives your playing structure, but does this not apply to someone who reads someone elses music..as for dynamics, i think this comes from your own personality, touch, sensitivity, erm...reading the music (by ear) not sight.. as for number 5 answers from Mcrow and S5S, i totally disagree...any music is relevant in any instrument.there is no certain music to listen to as a bass player or any other..you can learn from anyone in any genre....any one who doesnt, is missing something in there playing...if we all thought like that knowone would move forward.. and solos have no bounds in any instrument....as long as its done tastefully....i want musical instrument playing to evolve, not to be stuck by constraints IMVHO
12.
Hi My name is Jack I am a bass player I play both bass guitar and string bass. I am currently studying the MA level in popular music. Part of the course requires that I do a project into an area which interests me. I have chosen to research into the role of the bass player with the shift from the string bass to the bass guitar within the 1950s to present and including popular music styles. I was wondering if you could please help me by answering a short questionnaire in relation to this, to form a true opinion. Thank you for your time and for helping me with this. Jack 1) How long have you been playing Bass Guitar/String Bass for or both? 2) If you don’t play string bass/bass guitar have you thought of doubling up on either to get more recognition as a bass player? 3) Who are your favourite exponents of both string bass/bass guitar? 4) Do you think that both the bass guitar and string bass are important as bass instruments? 5) What genres do you think are important for bass players to listen to? 6) Do you think electric guitarists can learn to play bass guitar more than string bass? 7) Do you think bass can be used to solo as well as accompany other instruments? 8) Do you think it is important to learn to sight read? 9) What do you think of bass guitars such as 5 string/6 string e.g. as being an add-on to the bass players role? 10) What are your opinions on electric upright basses as a substitute for the string bass? 11) What is the best amp to use for bass guitar or string bass? 12) What pickups for string bass are the best for capturing the natural tone of the instrument?
Hello there Jack..i would be happy to help.. 1..10 years.. 2... i take it you mean upright..yes i have but you dont need to play it to be recognised...you dont have be recognised to enjoy playing it. 3...Willie Weeks, Randy Hope Taylor, Meshell ndegeocello, Pino Palladino, Molan, Dale Black, Andrew Gouche..there are so many greats... 4...Yes, there are both the same in respect of music 5...All of them 6...? 7...well of course bro if you and the band want to...joy can come from a well placed solo.. 8...It depends on what you want from the instrument...do you want to make a living from electric bass? 9... horses for courses Jack...if you need, you do...some people or styles depict wether you play a certain amount of strings on your instrument 10..a certain tone/song, needs a certain bass...there should be no substitute.. 11...You need to hear to invest Jack...most of these Q's are what you may think if you try...im sure you may get lots of opinions...but im sure every one will say what i just did.. 12...Well any passive pickups...some say certain brands are better, but this comes down to personal choice...it also depends on the bass..if your talking about a passive instrument there are many..Nordstrand, Lindy Fralins, Wizards, Fender,etc... im a big fan of Bartolinis, very cool sounding pups..but this is all subjective of course..the best passive pups are (like you said) only giving you what the instrument designers want you to hear, not coloured in any way...but there are many options... hope this helps bro
13. Does anyone have a narrow string 5...If so how do you get on with slapping on it...do you find it a easy, have you taken time to practice and it has come....also do you find it easy going from a normal spacing 4 to a narrow 5 slap wise? any thoughts..
14. Good call Obi!! my favorite style of funk... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWij10i6D24
15.
I bought my wife a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster for Christmas and I am in love with it, so much so that I want to get a bass to compliment it. I have very strong GAS for a Fender 51 Reissue, but the only stumbling point is that it is says Fender on the headstock and I wish it said Squier. This is the first time I have experienced this emotion. Don't get me wrong, I much prefer the look of the Fender 51 to the Squier 50s P, but I prefer the Squier brand. Is this weird or has does anyone else feel like this?
No there is nothing weird with that...Squire owners can hold there heads high, they are great basses...ive played a MEX, MIJ, USA jazzez and there isnt that much difference in tone to the Squire....Not sure what pups are in Squires but they do a good job...Put some Lindy Fralins in one an your in business.. i do think the name has a little way to go mind...what is really cool (i think) is a great player funking on a Squire..really cool
16. ask Rasta he plays in a very good reggae band that i know..knows his stuff..
17. are you familiar with riddims etc.... Ba Ba Boom Riddim is cool...which version you follow is up to you. Picture on the Wall by various.. Rat in my kitchen, ub40's Johnny to bad Riddim, various Declaration of rights riddim Master Blaster Stevie Wonder...great bass, i always loved playing the bass solo in this
18. thats cool if hes a friend, but what does he mean by the bridge need resetting? does he mean intonation, or saddle adjustments?
19. I play both and cant really understand why people go to 5 strings and dont or cant go back to 4....i play both bcause my 4 and 5 have different tones that i use.. the only drawbacks can be a slightly wider neck..someone said a 5 is a different instrument?? its an electric bass with an added B string..thats it...the advantages are you have lower note frequencies and you can move around easier without making big jumps.. i think some who want to play a 5 overthink it...get to know all the notes on the string, and get used to the wider neck...its a little alien at first but you get used to it...after a while a 4 stringer will look very simple.. practise practise practise...6, 7, strings next hey!!!
20.
Hello everyone, I am on the hunt for a new preamp for my Yamaha TRB5 fretless after deciding through various reviews and forums that the pickups are less of a problem then then pre. So far I have had a look at the U-Retro 5 Knob Deluxe by John East and that seems fairly promising with the whole tonal variation incl/the active passive functions. It's also convenient as it has the same amount of tone knobs as the TRB. Does anyone own one of his preamps and know how good it is? Any other suggestions? Thanks Jamie
Yes i have the U Retro in my Sei jazz....tis very good..very comprehensive...sounds awsome coupled with the Bartolinis in it..
