Pete great thread..my fav in fact.. these for me are the best of my best..my bread and butter my dream woman!! this is the best funk ive ever heard..i mean ever ever.. super cool this sh*t..doesnt get any better than Maceo and his band IMHO!!!! check out the horn section... Wonderful this, i love this funky jazzy version of this tune.."those test tubes and the scales, get them all out of here".Tom Barney is sooooo cool in this clip..holds down the groove to perfection.. This really isnt for the OP..i really think this is one of the groove masterpieces.. I love Larry Carlton's playing on this..he a true master..dont get me started on Chuck's groove....hes got patience that man....there is not many days that go by when i dont listen to this tune..my sister is a Steely Dan nut because of this song...love it.. Michael M has wonderfull close harmonies on this song There is a way that that Stevie plays that Clav that sounds so much better than the original...pure groove. groove doesnt come much better than this.. I love these 2...this band has become such an integral part of why i play bass.as im sure it has alot of you........but strangley i love Niles's guitar playing in this..just perfect.. This is my go to Chic song....just the best that they did IMO...wonderfull bass playing , the best disco ever made... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLAxeBa6oA8
Yeah, fair point - the Yam could make a good mods project, a good quality base to start from, like a Swindon built Honda You may have to do some woodwork to get the pickups of your choice to fit...

i wonder how good a jazz bass mr shuker or some other respected luthier would be able to make for that much?
Yeah that would be special...

WOW..now this is a Marcus Miller jazz..never seen a CS go for this much..do they mean only 10 made..? this has got to be good!!! http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_marcus_mil...aster_built.htm
Isn't buying a Lakland then swapping out the pickups & pre a bit like buying a Ferrari then putting an Aston Martin engine in it? What about a 5 string Standard Jazz? You could put an ACG filter pre and have a massive range of hot pickups that would drop right in, no mods needed.
Not really because a 55-01 is not a Ferrari in quality terms..more of an Audi?? im really liking the thought of tricking up a Yamaha 1005 maybe

for me any flaws are nice in a nostalgic way, i know what you mean...but playing good electric bass is hard enough, so i dont want any parts of the bass, wether it be comfort, uneven tone (although this is inevitable on some instruments).to hinder me...i want to concentrate on my playing, not the fact that the bass is uncomfortable..i get my nostalgia from scratches i made on my Fender or the dings and cracks on my Sei.... remember modern basses will be old one day... for cutting my hands on an un contoured bass, thats not my sort of intensity, but each to there own...i dont think that an instrument that is harder to play adds to your personality, your personality should be there regardless of the instrument..IMHO There is nothing like a worn in bass..i got my Sei 5 from Molan, and its the most comfortable bass ive ever played..from the shallow heel, the silky smooth body, to the lightness of it...then there is the tone.wow the tone......just an amazing instrument...very clever man Martin Peterson..even the side dots that are white, have tinny metal surroundings..and the slim neck with smaller string spacing is such a joy to play..... sound very stupid, but sometimes i im playing and i laugh at how good the tone and playability of this bass is..yes i am strange and have no friends.. ive had heavy, and neck dive basses in the past, and there a pain in the erm....back...each to there own definately...still want a 60's jazz though... one in an off white with a rose wood board and pearl blocks and matching headstock..(dont know if this color was available in 60's?)...B5 is dribbling while writing this... saying all this im really not sure what i would go for out of a well sorted 62 jazz or something like a Celinder or Alleva??

What exactly is the reason you like vintage gear..would like to know the exact reasons for this preference to older gear....is it the sound of an old valve amp, the (i hate this word) Mojo of an early bass...i believe as a musician (apart from the asthetic qualities) you should buy the gear that suites you most in every aspect of your playing... i would like to try out an early 60's jazz but personaly find it a bit daunting..seems its a little bit of a mine field, especially with the sort of cash they go for...ive had a few basses, but in the end ive come down to two basses that i cant really fault, and give me the sound, feel and playability that i want.. alot of 'modern gear' is very hard to beat, i defy any vintage bass, to match a Sei jazz for performance..0r any othr high end instrument,.. unless you find something old, thats very special...The evolution of design is inevitably going to make things erm...better.(not always i know) My own views are that bass and amp building are better than they were 20/30 years ago, no doubt about it...for me wanting vintage gear is more about a certain sound, nostalgia, or an investment...im a jazz bass nut so i love the thought of a 62 jazz, but the reality is, i would rather spend 3-4 grand on an Alleva or Celinder than a 62 jazz...unless the jazz was amazing!! the bottom line is there is room for both..an old bass through a modern valve amp, a modern bass through a vintage amp.and mix it up..pays your money, take choice...there is so much choice you can get lost..for me a CS jazz or Sei through an Aguilar is enough...still like to funk a 62 jazz through a valve Ampeg though. i certainly wouldnt just stick to vintage gear though,, the modern world of bass has so much to offer...

Im thinking about buying a bass to trick up....it has to be active, has to have 5 strings...im thinking of maybe buying a Lakland 55-02 and putting some brand of pre amp in it? and some hot pick ups?...not sure what the stock Bart/Lakland's are like... im looking to get alot of warmth, punch and snap.. i know this topic is very subjective would like some suggestions.. what bass? what preamp? what pickups?
Heres the bass.
WOW.. just an amazing musician..its only until you see him deconstruct his playing, do you see how good Victor is...

its funny how my thread 'Where is Bass' seems to have brought up Victor's name...it seems to me he is at the forefront of electric bass (im sure there are others) taking the instrument to it limits(or maybe there is alot more)....at the end of the day it will allways come back to music no matter how many techniques you use...I for one know Victor is an incredibly musical bass player....and he can groove with the best in the world...people who dont open there eyes, think its all chops... Like many on here im sure...i do prefer much simpler players like Meshell, her appeal for me has never been her wealth of technical ability..its her touch and feel on he bass.and matched with a fantastic sense of harmony and musical construction....fxxxin awsome....thing is Victor can do this too...still wouldnt play 'God Fear Money' like Meshell can though... The bottom line for me is, you dont need loads or bass skills to be a GREAT...note selection, note placement, being aware of the music, and having a character all of your own..thats what makes you a good bassist...IMO............Just look at Zender!!!! "ive come to my technical plateau, where do i go from here" go back to the music, its where you should have started from...i heard that once, those were my thoughts.. Well said Rasta..Dan said you were a great bass player...we gonna hook up soon bro??

like i said, where is bass.or where can it go.....would you rather hear melodic bass lines that compliment the song, or would you rather hear super techniques that blow you away...somewhere in between for me... ive often thought that the bass is a slave to the music really, even if its play with some flamboyance , as long as it stays within it boundries...thats where it is most effective right?? lets face it, most of the public who listen to music dont even know the bass is there(which is a shame) but what will it take, to take bass to the level that other instruments are...im thinking this may never happen because of the nature of the instrument... sometimes i love the fact that its only us that realise the importance of electric bass, but i wish sometimes that other (non musician) people would think about what there listening to sometimes...as well as other instruments of course!! i very rarely come across anyone who says "oh i love that bass line" or "man i dig that guitar or trumpet part" ive often said that i play bass for the bigger picture which i stand by, but does our bass playing fall on deaf ears? are we slaves to the listeners as well as the music! oh i do think too much..
