Superbly grooving all the way through, finally topped off by Willie Weeks' stunning solo on 'Voices Inside (Everything is Everything).
Yes essential...even if you dont like this stuff... Yes it is staggeringly good that solo..
2.
Start off with amp flat, soundcheck then tweak to the room... punch the mids according to the soundman. Tend to trust him during the gig for the frontline but will tweak the bass if I feel I'm lacking something in the flappy department!!
i usually forget the amp, tweak the barmaid, then punch the sound man..tend not to trust him during the gig as he fancies the barmaid and im feeling too pissed and flappy in the trouser department...
3.
I usually start off with one of these bad boys as it allows me to dial in my tone, surf the web and sink the titanic in one handy location In all seriousness, I would normally set everything flat on bass and amp then adjust the amp first, using the bass for the final tweak
Bloody great!!!!!.ha ha....nearly choked on my Rogan Josh that was perfect
4. i agree, its always good, learning from people with more experience! and meeting guys like (ill use there AKA's) Molan, ZiggyD, PTP,..i have learned so much from people on here... not just about our instrument, but music in general... 90% of the instruments if owned are from this forum!! Hurrah!!!!... for the brotherhood/sisterhood called BC..!! who needs talkbass
5. Just to add, i was playing a gig recently and the erm...sound man asked on behalf of the on coming band, if the bass player could borrow my bass as he had erm...erm... forgotten his???? He wanted to borrow my CS Jazz. i said a polite no....i was later watching the band, he had borrowed a bass and proceeded to play..i could tell the guy was pissed..he played sh*te, and the music seemed like it called for it..he was knocking the bass around, wacking the headstock against the wall..put it down against a wall and you know the rest.. Also a guy used my Aguilar rig because it was a pain to move the stage around...a guy with a super hot HH stingray turned the gain on 3/4 without touching the master....never lend gear out..they dont care..
6.
I lent a (£1000) combo to a responsible grown up experienced sober musician friend of mine a few years ago. His had gone bang that afternoon and he had a good gig to play. When it came back the next day he told me the dolly trolley wheels were crap on kerbs when he had walked it the 3 miles home at 3 in the morning. the carpet was all ripped up underneath .... I do like to help though so I bought gear I can lend out. I have an old Peavey 300 combo and a Japanese P bass that, should they return with damage I'd not be too upset. The Peavey's been on a few adventures without me since I got it and the P bass has had a few oiks play it at jams. No damage so far (except to te audience when the guy borrowing the Peavey found out how loud Peavey watts are ) But no, I'll not lend my nice gear to anyone.
at the end of the day you did him a favour, he damaged your bass and doesnt seem to have made up the balance of that favour! this is a no brainer....he either pays up to repair the damage, you take him to the SCC, or you dont talk to him again.. his arrogance in saying he wont pay up for something he has done, would be enough for me...if anyone damaged one of my basses and said they wouldnt pay for it, would know about it.. i know the cost may be less but if he drove your car, and put a dent and scratch on the body, would you let it go...? this is your call, and depends on the way you feel..but whats right is what right...and this is not right... IMHO..
7. Erm..could be wrong..im out of my depth here..great all the same..
8.
I usually run the amp at one overall setting and then eq on the bass from there. A lot of it depends on the particular bass. The Status preamps run at a very different frequency to the others, so you can usually get the best sound from maximum treble and bass, with the mid position switch to the flat setting. With the Sadowsky preamp, I usually use 50 percent of both treble and bass. That seems to give the nicest overall sound. The treble control (and pickup positioning) on the Ray is a lot more sensitive, so usually I'm only a gnat's whisker above flat on that one, but again, mids flat and bass boosted to max. Basically, I like a scooped sound with plenty of richness from the bass frequency & plenty of treble for sparkling highs. Usual amp settings are input/gain at 25%, bass at about 60%, treble at 75%, mids all flat in the middle & output volume at 50%. The amp settings may sound odd, but with a powerful preamp on the bass, half of the job is already done. Also, making sure you're using a lot less input gain than output volume seems to give a much sweeter sound overall. Rich, aka. The eq hooligan!
For a start set it flat.....then go from there..its easy to get lost in something like a John East pre etc.. Im with Rich, i love a mid a scooped sound. but not so much you loose mid punch..also like Rich said.....it really depends on you bass and amp..seeing as these are your 'controls of tone'. im a big believer in setting everything flat on bass and amp.. then testing what sound is good to your ears...i pull on a little bass, turn back the mids, turn up the treble...depending on your bass you really have to experiment..
9. Donny Hathaway, Willie Weeks.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUSknnYo77g Unsurpassed only by James J... Not only is the voice the best ive ever heard, but the bass playing makes me cry everytime i hear it! Willie bounces around like a musical master on the bass..for me in the pocket bass playing rarely gets better than this.. Rod Stewart and the SF. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xikQ0c5KdZE...PL&index=31 Ive always loved Ronnie Lanes bass playing on this song...wonderfull... Stevie with JJ.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pYux5-d1Es Im not sure whats better...Well its Stevie, and yes more erm....crying from me.. Masterfull bass line, with a natural ability to work the bass with the song as a whole.. its all in the note choices hey!!!!! listen to him go.... Meshell Ndegocello/ Marcus Miller. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zo0YoQbloY Marcus on full Soulful slapping, just amazing..his little solo at 3.20 is worth more than the whole song!!!!!
10. Sounds like he's a dreamer..with no talent ive been there..with a pianist who wanted to be a singer songwriter, trouble is he knew nothing about writing music...your all in it together in a band, unless your a session bassist being payed to play.. Ed, you say your not good enough to join a good band? there isnt just bad bands and pro bands..in between there are people maybe like you who may want more and push themselves..dont be afraid to advertise yourself and state where you are and you want to be a better musician...there are clubs open mic nights, jam night's, people who want to jam..takes just a little confidence thats all.. i went to a Jazz open mic night an i was shxxxing myself, only the Sei and the groove got me by... but by and all musicians are a very friendly bunch who welcome you.. music is about a personal journey, but along the way there are some amazing people that can help you see a bigger picture.. i dont want to sway you..(ok maybe i have) but i would walk, and go where you are not held back.. no Ed is the bass player in Question..i think he was refering to himself? good luck bro..
11. wow this is whole lot of quality bass for the money Rayman is asking!!
12.
Amen
And we are the lords of the dance said he..
13. this guy has been a favorite of mine for a long time..here some of his playing on 'We the People'.he creates bass lines that are super cool...Great great band, seen them at the Jazz Cafe...over the top saxophonist which i love, awsome bassist Jonothan Marone..Hes getting a great old school tone from that Yamaha.. check this out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrLc14NUmqk anyone tell which model he's playing?
14. bump..will be away until fri..
15. Lovely lovely bass!!! Do you mean 2500 pounds
16.
They all look a bit too pleased with themselves for my liking. I have bits and bobs of Marcus on other folks albums and think he's a wonderful player but that sort of music sounds like it belongs in a lift car or something. Not for me , my opinion because I was invited to give it - thankfully many will love it making neither party right or wrong.
If i had a pound for everytime ive heard someone who has said that..Im sure the amazing musicians of the erm....'lift music' would appreciate that...but like you said each to there own..
17. I agree with Pete...Marcus's playing is no way thwackitta...IMHO....he has a brilliantly groovy, unique style...im not a fan of slap where its too percussive with no actual notes being played... See i told you Pete...
18.
For my 2 pence worth, I don't think I'd ever enjoy music when all the crowd is sitting down. The music was alright if you like that kind of thing but the sax player just seemed to be hitting random notes.
Those Jazz saxophonist's..havent got a clue have they..
19. Ah...this is alot like my Flea rant...a little pointless and doesnt mean anything apart from you just dont like style of music... i liked the edgar winter band! ....not alot of music going on in the Nick Cave clip..but i may be missing the point... Doesnt help that your opinions are about one of best bassists in the world, and your on a bass forum.. cant see how you think Marcus has got no soul...check out some of his other vids..
20. Meshell is making music for herself not her listeners... i personally think Peace Beyond Passion is her finest hour.. she certainly doesnt get stuck in any one genre...i think people expect to hear the funky stuff from her, but shes much more than that..her latest album takes a few listens..
21. Yes fantastic bass...i had one with nordstrand pups and a Glock preamp...superb...the stock ones are great too...im thinking about getting another...
22.
check this amazing clip out...stevie wonder on the drums....the more i discover about him the more amazed i am...is there anything this guy cant do??? Err...how about see?
Uhh?
23.
bubinga5, I do believe you are actually a bigger bass tart than Beedster or I! It was only a couple of weeks ago that you started a thread on how brill S5's are But seriously, good luck with your sale .. and I can see why Mike's Shuker 4 would appeal - what a stunning bass
He he..yes i know...dont get me wrong i still think they are amazing...but i just fancy a change...
