Bass players who advance the instrument into new territory
bubinga5 replied to thisnameistaken's topic in General Discussion
Holding down the low end while trying to play bits of McCartney, Jamerson and Dunn, no requirement to solo or be flashy, living in tonal heaven ... why would I want to go somewhere else? New territory is there for the explorers, and no doubt I'll be able to get a cheap package tour there in a few years, but right now I'm perfectly comfortable playing a deep groove on a P-bass with flats.
This is how i feel HJ..There are times when a bass solo are called for, and some times when it is not..My point is, we play an instrument that we all love and the bottom line is, we play it for the music, and we should be humble in that fact..This is why i love Sting, Ndegeocello, Mc Cartney, ,..they use the bass as a tool for a bigger picture... Its great to have a passion for an instrument, and thats why, people on this forum are very good at playing the electric bass, but we are all a slaves to the music...Its great that people like VW take the instrument to its limits, but its not really what matters..I get much more joy when bass is played well in the context of a great song, and played well with taste and a vision that puts the jigsaw puzzle together... I have allways wondered if our want for the best tone possible matters? But i came to the conclusion that my quest for the best bass tone is what ..I.. want to hear, and makes me want to play more, more than what the crowd cares about...I play the piano, and that takes the front seat when it comes to writing music..it just so happens that i love bass, so you can be sure i would make sure the bass sounded great...I hope -

I dont think hes over playing in the last two vids.?.Just awsome groove! VW seems to have a bad rep when it comes to flashy playing, but i guess thats what seels the tickets to his shows...I very much doubt Victor would over play, in the context of a song..At the end of the day he is a solo artist who plays bass!!

For me this is the best Miller vid by far..Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Poogie on drums...Amazing.. The solo at the start is such a lovely build up, then comes the Miller slapping..gets me every time...Sublime Everette Harp on Sax is one of my favorite, such great feeling in his vibrato.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHf7DvVpeiU Check the solo at 2.30

Right im a bass player who likes a bass player who is a slave to the music, ala Marcus Miller, Meshell....But VW just blows me away with his rythmic sense and timing..Is there anyone who can touch this guy with his monster technique...Its just incredible.. Here he is with Bela Fleck... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZxT85-CSFU If he left all the flash behind, you know he would play a serious groove though... This is killer..just amazing!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-hyEYi0O-M...feature=related or this..his playing at 3.28 onwards is supreme... Im looking to brush up on my theory and advanced techniques on the bass..Was wondering what the best online lessons are.. I dont mind paying for them, so want something very comprehensive. (from beginner to advanced).I dont want the BS sites that tell me i can play like a pro in 10 minutes...I just want a program i can delve into when i want to, and pick up some new stuff.. I would like to use it as a recourse to access when i want.. Any ideas?
My brain is trying to get to grips with you ordering them at 8 pm, then, getting them the next morning. [/quote Yeah confused me..Not sure who they came by, not sure it was Royal Mail.. I was dumb struck when they were on my desk at work. -
The master at work, easily the best 'Musical' slapper playing today.. The man on drums is Poogie Bell. awsome too..You should check some of Poogie's albums out..
Thinking about putting them on one of my Jazz basses. Are they really THAT good? I normally use Elixirs for that particular bass but am considering a change!
Yes i think they are that good...I would recommend them highly..the best string ive ever heard...they have a lovely quality sound to them..I could be wrong but i think there manufactured slightly differently to most strings.... Of course they may not be for everyone, they are bright..but they make different types.. -
I just recieved some DR Hi Beams from String Busters..First i should say that i ordered them online at 8.00 pm one night and amazingly they came the next morning!!?? Now thats good service!! So i put them on the Lakland which has Nordies and a Glockenklang pre and just sounds amazing anyway..i put these on, and was blown away! For real, these are the best strings i have ever played on a bass..(and i think i have tried them all)...They feel great aswell.. They are expensive but well worth it..I will use these strings exclusively now, i love them.. I cant wait to try them on the Jazz. I applaud String Busters and DR's...

WOW,,surely this is taking the search for tone too far!!?? One set of DR's is enough for me..Im happy with the tone all across the fretboard...

From the day I started playing I said to myself that I would never play a jazz or a precision They were my thoughts when i first started playing...Like Rich said your best bet is to get a US Jazz and get a external pre amp, like the Aguilar Tone Hammer, or the fantastic Sadowsky pre... All the best...
