4.
Never been a massive fan of listening to gospel personally, just seems a bit heavy on aesthetics and a bit cliched at the expense of the music to me, its one of those genres that I really enjoy when exposed to it in the first person, but recorded it just doesn't do it for me. Then again, I've never really been exposed to that much of it and next year I'm playing bass for a gospel choir, so we'll see eh?
just seems a bit heavy on aesthetics and a bit cliched at the expense of the music to me..IMHO. the only thing that matters to these guys is the music!!!.. that and our Lord. :rolleyes:they dont give the music up for nothig..... .Aesthetics dont even come into it. I doubt these musicians think about what they, or the band look like. with respect... i didnt understand the Cliched side of it. But man your playing for a choir.i would love to do that..wether it be uk choir or usa. Gotta push your theory knowledge that.. I enjoy music recorded most of the time. You just have to use your imagination a bit
  5.
Man,that is one style I really want to learn. I now feel like I'm playing the same stuff after 5 years of bass.
Learn? I think you probably know the nuts a bolts already, its all in the rythm I now feel like I'm playing the same stuff after 5 years of bass. How do you mean?
  6. Hey people. Has any one listened to Gospel much.. Im not talking about traditional Gospel, but funky stuff. I dont mean to sound arrogant but i have listened to everything from Chaka, to White Zombie, but nothing has touched me musically like this stuff. Its not just the bass playing (which is incredible, slap/finger syle magic) but the whole feeling, rythm, and big band vocals. Now, i have been known to be thinking of what made me, but thats not why i listen to it. Sounds of Blackness got me started on this stuff 10 years ago.. If you like soul funk jazz, you HAVE to listen to this!!!!.. my erm...recommended listen is a choir/band called New Direction..'Send the praise'.../It doesnt get any better than this!!!! Beautiful funky soul gospel, and the bass playing is world class.
  7.
Well, I arrived home 3 days ago from a vacation of a lifetime: 10 days in NYC. I went with my mate Marco, a keyboard player, and we stayed in Midtown Manhattan. Being jazz fans, we were pretty excited about visiting the famous venues, Blue Note etc; and experiencing some good music. I, however, wasn't prepared for such a bass extravaganza!! The first gig was in the Blue Note and was the Poogie Bell band. You probably have already heard Poogie....he plays drums for Marcus Miller... Well, Marcus wasn't there, but he had a fantastic bass player called Kevin Barefoot playing for him, a lovely Fodera into the venues own Aguilar rig... Next night was Blue Note again, this time it was a group called Metro, with none other than Dave Weckl on kit, Gerald Veasley on bass and Randy Brecker on trumpet. Oh, and Will Lee was in the house, so he went up for a jam... Then on Monday night we took a little visit to the 55 Bar, where Jaco and Mike Stern used to tear it up. Mike was playing that night, but this time with the African Jaco, Mr. Richard Bona: On wednesday we went to see Lettuce (for those not in the know, they are one of the hottest funk bands out) on a ferry that went up the hudson. Probably the best funk gig I ever saw. And the bass player is called Jesus. He was in Bass Player last month I think. During the week I payed a little visit to Rudy's bass shop and got my sweaty mits on a a few jems, some lovely modulus, an mtd or two, a sukop, an f-bass....but the highlight was a 'modified' '77 jazz. Sublime. So, to some up, in the space of a week I met 3 bass legends playing with fellow world class musicians and saw various other ensembles that were all individual musical gems. Only in New York! I recommend it to anyone!!! Cheers, Craig
Poogie Bell is fantastic. You should check out his album 'Thinking Outside the Box' tis a great album..I would love to go to the New York bass works and try those out..Rudy's, arent they the place for Pensa basses? I am so envious bro, that i think i hate you!!!!!only kidding, that is where i would love to go..I cant believe you saw all those legends..Mike Stern, Richard Bona,Will Lee..Good on you man... That chap Jesus, did he have a beard and play a Deluxe Jazz? Thanks for the pics bro!!!!!

I saw a very old YouTube clip of him on Bernard Edwards old Stingray which he owns...He is a very good bass player.
  15.
Hey Bubinga 5, Just noticed you are Cheltenham based, do you know Aroundabout sound by any chance? The owner is selling his GB spitfire, it is absolutely stunning but it is a four string (didn'y know what you were after). I have tried a few overwaters, a friend has a 6 string and I tried nearly all of the basses at the stand at the london guitar show this year. Overwaters are beautifully made and look stunning but as some others have said it depends what you are after. My friend used his in a rock band with a Euphonic Audio Iamp 800 and to be honest it was gutless and didn't cut through in a hard rock band (may just have been him not using it right) but I found the sound very mellow. (incidentally he used a warwick and an Ashdown next gig in the same venue and it was HUGE!) I dont want to offend any Overwater owners, they are stunning but not right for my ears! I prefer a much more punchy stingray tone so maybe that is why it did not rock my world. The OW Jazz I tried was better but again it just didn't do it for me, I just found it lacking in balls especially after going and playing a lakland. The GB in Cheltenham is amazing and in fact I nearly maxed out a credit card and bought it, just ask them as it is not out on show. Anyway I hope you find something, Head to the gallery in London probably the best idea, might even pick up something secondhand and save a few quid
Hello mate, yes i know them..that is where i bought my first bass..Wow i will check that GB out..Thanks man!!
  16.
There are a few Overwater users on here - have you tried the search? How did you arrive at your shortlist? No GB, ACG, Status or Shuker?
Well to be honest it is just asthetical at the moment..Im a Jazz bass man really...Have looked at Shuker and GB, but to be honest im too impatient to wait for the build. ..I have yet to try many basses so really i will buy what i like the sound and feel of..Never know i may buy something totally different..I will go to tha Gallery, Bass Direct, etc.. Sei an option also!!! Thanks BF..
  17.
Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody knew any other good UK shops for Bass/Guitars etc etc I know of GAK, DV27 and ebay which I use often, but are there any other real good ones which im missing out on? Oh Im looking for ibanez sr705 / 535 if thats any help! Thanks!!
Teddy try Bassworld.... http://ccgi.psstpsst.force9.co.uk/php/owbass.php just as good if not better than Bass Gallery..Ok maybe not ...but they still have top end basses, Overwater,Alembic,Lakland,Fender,Warwick..Check it out..
  18. Im in the market for a new bass as soom may have noticed my endless posts on the matter... ..My short list is Lakland, Sadowsky, Mike Lull (which im very keen on)..What i would like to know is how good are Overwater in this company. My max budget is £2000.00 or there abouts..I have spotted a few Overwaters i like in my price range... I would be interested in the J style bass. Dont see many about??? Apart from an orange one on here, cant remember the chaps name?? Anyone know of any soundclips of any overwaters??
  19. In my opinion there is no musician alive that can touch the genius of Beethoven and the other classic composers!! They thought about music on such a different level.. Apart from those i admire Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Anita Baker for her beautiful love songs...Billy Joel, Meshell Ndegeocello,Sting,Pink Floyd.. Steve Smith and Poogie Bell are the best drummers in the world, IMHO..
  20. Hey people. Can anyone tell me the best music shops in Bristol. Im talking higher end basses, if possible. I know Jam guitars. Just wondered if there were any others i should check out?? Thanks.
  21.
Hi guys I'm new here. So Hi. I had a Bass many years ago and stopped playing, now I want another one. I want to use it to play along to my favourte CD's. I know there is a ton of advise out there. But what would be a great bass for between £100 & £400, I am happy to consider new or 2nd hand. Some suggestions of Basses (models, brand) in this price bracket that are regarded as good buys would be really helpful. Thanks Jase The Bass
Hello bro....What did you have before Jase? I would suggest Yamaha of sorts, MIM Jazz/Precision. You could get decent second hand bass for £400.00 squid!! Im not sure if you could stretch to a second hand Lakland 44-01 or 55-01, but if you could i would do that, without a doubt!!!! If not maybe Squire Jazz deluxe. Bloody nice them!! The Lakland is the one on the right..Awsome bass..
  22.
Wow he's really good, i love his tone. I was looking at one of those rogue basses at one point too.
Thats what that bass is. Didnt know..Amazing tone. Are they expensive basses??
  23. He was in the pocket!! You cant not, nod your head to that! Sorry one more, this guy is incredible. Ohh the chops!!! Dale Black...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ThwuJVcyoA He gets into a badass groove with the drummer at 7.30..
  24. Man i love to watch/listen to these gospel cats. I read on one of his posts, that hes been playing for only 6-7 years!!!!???..He over plays sometimes but who cares. Is it something about worship that does it?? The slapping at 1.20 is so fresh. Thought i would share.
