Like i said before its all about balance. Any one gets bored going over scales modes etc. You have to make it musical because thats why we do it!! I know a guitarist who doesnt know any theory at all. he doesnt even know what the notes are on the f board. But he is very good. But there in, lies a problem, he admitted to me that he only plays the riffs/patterns hes comfortable with and he knows. He has a lot of them but there still all the same. I would think that theory opens up new avenues, that you didnt think about before. When i first learned walking bass lines, i realised you didnt have to play off of the root! I could play off of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and all sorts of inversions.. I would like to think of theory as a tool for a higher place All though i still dont think about it when playing

Oscar made sense also!! the experience you gain from the time you put in on the instrument, show in your playing. I would think that the theory is a platform for the emotional mind to work from. Blimey im getting deep. The only trouble is i have so many bass/musical things going on in my head that thay may not come light without theory????

Hey people. I was playing last night over a Major chord loop, and thought that i dont actually think about scales or modes.( i may be playing them at the time, but i couldnt remember) Its probably an obvious thing to say to most of you guys/girls, but feeling and emotion gets me around the bass, either it be slow soul, or staccato fingerstyle, with out a thought of what scale i may be playing. Does anyone think this is bad practice?? Obviously i would not do this if i had company. but i dont seem to think about reference points and im not sure if im delving too much into, erm.. 'FREE' bass playing. As im not in a band at the mo... I always see other cats doing stuff i admire and think, i wonder if that was off the cuff.. maybe i need to put my head down in the books, and think about what im playing a bit more? Any wise thoughts

Was watching Andrew Gouche on you tube and he seems to have total control of the instrument, it must be great to have total mind/instrument connection!! My question is, has anyone on BC got to this level of playing that they dont think about the physicalities? of playing, but can play what your mind and ears want you to play!? I can improvise over chord progressions, but this guy is something else.!!! I tell my self that its about the music i write as a whole, not the single element..which i soo believe!! My Holly grail is this connection , as im sure it is to all you guys/girls....practice practice practice hey!!! Of course im sure these guys work around progressions they know?? Andrew..

Hey people..Im im shortly going to buy some recording equipment, and was thinking a Yamaha N8, this is in a package deal with cubase. I dont have alot of experience using this program(or any for that matter) is it easy to use/learn.....am i better off starting with something more simple. I have tried to find a demo but to no avale..To be honest im new to recording..Have come into some money so i thought i would set myself up.. Then again i dont want to buy equipment i dont know how to use!!! Any advice???

Chicago garage especially........Was listening to some house music today and was digging the bass playing..Im not talking judge jules or stuff like that, this was Masters at Work and Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles..The groove was amazing, and REAL bass playing. Im a big fan of Masters at Works cuts of Incognitos stuff..I couldnt tell you who was playing but it was bad ass!! Any one dig?
