I'm after a 24-fret bass with classic styling
bubinga5 replied to markyboy2106's topic in Bass Guitars
I think I am now starting to get it. The distance from nut to bridge is relatively standard 34"-35" (is this right). Therefore you can't just go attaching a 24 fret neck to any body shape otherwise you end up in a whole world of pain tuning-wise (this is a eurekea moment for me). Therefore the distance between end of neck and beginning of neck pup makes it difficult to fit a pickguard as the distance is quite small. Hence, most come without pickguards. What other 24-fretters are around that people have had success with that have maintained that air of classic styling? Custom jobs included...
I cant erm...think of any, sub £1000, take a look at John Shuker's custom basses. Im sure he would make you something to your desires. Im sure many people will vouch for his work. Check out his website.. His basses CAN be relatively cheap aswell...for a custom -
are you getting paid work with them?
No John, but the band leader is intent on making money from it pretty soon, and ive got to be honest, he prob will, because the music is V good!
How long you been with them?
About 7 months Sarah..I might also add that the songs are all original, but all seem to be from the same era, (dont get me wrong i love the 70's).. It gets quite tiresome when we jam and the other two guys start singing beatles songs for half an hour Thanks girls/guys

When u say traditional i take it you mean Jazz or Precision, I own this bass that has 24 frets ( (in fact that is me playing it,..erm.. without a lead) to answer your question, there i no problem, its just that obviously traditional size j or p wont house 24 frets without extending the neck, so as you will notice on the bass in the photo (as well as the previous Sadowsky) they have shortened the body to allow for this. Notice the short distance from neck pup to fingerboard, as apposed to a normal 20 fret.. I agree there are production issues with this particular instrument, but when you get a good which i believe i did, its worth it, it plays/sounds as good as basses i've played costing twice as much.. I think your going to be hard pushed to find a stock sunburst j/p with a mint green s/plate and 24 frets, unless you go custom -
Blimey i never posted this often before , im in a bit of a dillema.... im in a band at the moment that play rock blues (think allman bro's, beatles, zep etc) although i like this sort of stuff, it really is not me, without wanting to name drop i like stuff, like Incognito, Meshell Ndegeocello, Earth wind and Fire, Prince etc..I know playing different styles is great for my overall playing, but i never really get to play how i want to...or maybe its that i dont like the style he wants me to play in?? Maybe i should be flattered these guys chose me to be the bassist (they had quite a few auditions) both guys have got 20+ years under there belt so i feel like bit of an idiot for moaning I know its good experience, but im just not feeling there groove. What do you guys/girls think

She's pretty awesome but very raw. Not everyone's cup of darjeeling
+3 for those three.....Rhonda is solid I love the way Meshell goes from slap to that fingerstyle...WOWZER

Hey people. I need a little advice on the world of flat wound strings. Also string lengths? Can anyone recommend some makes that do Flatwounds, Ive been trying to find some Labella flats, but with no success!! Also are flats more exspensive than normal rounds?? Also what length of string fit a Jazz bass...(medium)?? Ive never played Flat wound strings. Is it impossible to slap with them?? Cheers!!
I am an old fashioned soul who believes music should have rhythm and melody. If you cant hum it, it is not a tune and if it is not a tune then it becomes a random selection of notes, sometimes played very fast and with great technical ability, but it is not music.
+1 i appreciate his skill, but its very boring to watch.(this is prob because ive seen alot of this type of playing) i find most technical showcases like ultra fast slapping and tapping, double thumbing, on You Tube tiresome and obnoxious. These techniques are to be used sparingly(IMHO). I much prefer to hear a melodic groove(some of the Gospel cats) or an ORIGINAL solo.. This is nothing personal to this guy in particular, as im sure hes got alot up his bass sleeve, but there is just to much, 'look at what i can do' on the net..(IMHO) And Bass Ferret is not living in the past hes believes in the bread and butter that every bass player should base there playing around..The Music!! Oh what would a pianist do without all there special techniques!!?? i guess they would have to go back to playing melodic structured music!!
You couldn't be arsed either or you would have included a link. At least I was honest about it.
Maybe Funkmaster in all his forsight!!?? wasnt aware that Bass Ferret had already seen this thread, im sure if he had, he would'nt have dared mention it again!! -
The funkiest groove I have seen on YouTube for a while

One of my fave gospel players is Dale Black(Gospel Chops). Look him up on You Tube. WOW,Hes amazing!!! Loving that Lakland tone too! -
Thanks for that bro, think im gonna look at putting some Nordys in. Ive heard some great things about these pick ups....
-
Hey people, just a quick couple of questions. I am going to replace the Seymor Duncans in my Jazz, for Nordstrand split coils. Can anyone tell me if this an easy thing to do. What wiring is involved? Im quite handy with a soldering iron!! Secondly im experimenting with different strings and im looking for a string that is little easier to bend, lighter, and not so tight on the bass. Does thy look for different gauges???? i guess im looking for a more supple string.. Thanks in advance...
-
I love these basses. i believe there are distributed by Bass Direct, in the UK, which also sell Nordstrand's...awesome.!! Is this where you got it from eubassix??
-
Thanks DMZ. Well first off the 24 frets are great, the neck really comfortable, with a satin finish. I would say one thing though, having fitted 24 frets into the physical size of a normal jazz(i think) Fender have made the body of the bass a bit shorter, in turn, that shortens the distance of the neck pick up to the start of the neck itself. I found it awkward to rest my thumb on the neck pup as it felt like my hand was too far forward( this maybe just me). I now play soley from the bridge, and use the neck pup for a fatter sound, Another small thing was when slapping there is not much room because of this distance.., but all these things ive gotten used to. Like i said the Seymore Duncans are noisy, but arent all single coils(im not sure). But that faids away when when you here this thing. WOW.. You can get so many sounds out of this bass, from classic jazz bass to Jaco honk, and everything in between. The three band eq is so versatile, and with the mid scoop switch on its a killer slap sound. I usually play through a Behringer 150 watter, but i recently played it through an Ampeg SVT and it blew me away(got to get me a bigger amp)!!! The bridge is a chunky version of the standard jazz There are nice touches like the string through body, the silver Fender inlayin the head stock. and the Hipshot hard wear, and the quilt top which when i got it was flawless. Ive heard good and bad about these basses, i think there is a inconsistant quality issue with them, but i guess i got lucky with mine. There is a tiny gap in the neck pocket and the stack knob was alittle wobbly but apart from that..nowt. Like i said the only thing i would change are MAYBE, the pups. But not knowing alot about pickups im not sure, so if any one could advise, please do. Any way, happy i am. Just got to get me that Ampeg rig!!!

There the Seymore Duncan Bass lines. Which im thinking about changing, as there very noisy, but i suppose thats single coil for you!! Better when i mix the two pups.
