Does anyone else practice like this on bass.?
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Hey it makes a change from following the guitar part which I loath (sometimes) This is obviously just a practice technique. But ive heard bass players pop in a vocal part briefly. Hmm, bag of tricks have we not. (in a Yoda voice). -

Jaco practiced many parts from other instruments from many jazz records I believe -
For quite a while now I've not been following bass lines unless needed. Ive been following/learning vocals on the bass. Talk about a work out on bass.. Im aware a lot of bass players practice horn solo's etc Ive found that following vocal parts a real help and a great insight. This is one ive been learning among many others. Her vocals are so full of techniques like vibrato, hammer on/offs and a multitude of vocal expressions that I think are great on bass played at the right times. Its just great practice even if you just follow the root notes. But listen to her vocal techniques. OMG. Then when I have them down I go to the bass parts. What a revelation.!!! Im a massive Anita Baker fan so this record is where I started. One thing I will say. Its fxxxing hard.

She doesn't over play within the context of the record although her bass is out there, a nice fill here and there. In small parts she follows Luther's vocal parts near the end which is very clever. Just absolutely fantastic playing from her. imo. Oh... and to one of my favourite records.

Yeah lets not. Stay single Alpher.

I love SR5's. I had one in blue sparkle with matching headstock Single H. Absolute monster of a bass and looked beautiful. . The only issues was the weight, and a bit of a one trick pony. But what a trick. It would cut through any mix, so punchy. Of course yours is a HH so more versatile. Lovely necks and tighter string spacing make these basses a joy to play. Looks lovely. Congrats.

What a fantastic record from this man.i wasn't expecting it. My sister is a big fan so she plays alot of his stuff. So this record came up after a few, and my ears were alive.. Instantly I thought of the Micheal Mcdonald. Very Doobie Bros. David Sanborn on Sax. I just think its a brilliant record. imo.

I love Gold Teeth for its Jazz funk slide. But this is just stunning musicianship in every way possible. They are/were so superb, from the amazing harmonies, to the bass playing to the drumming. to that excellent guitar part from Denny. Its absolutely magical... imo.. I love soul and funk but if I was stuck on a desert island .

I ordered a Metro direct from Sadowsky. It was an MV5. It was ok. Didnt blow me away. The tone was amazing mind. The bass itself wasnt anything amazing. Ive ordered Sire 5 string jazz basses that were as impressive. TTS with a rosewood board. Well built. I would rather put my money down on a Lakland Skyline. Way way cheaper and just as good. USA electronics, fantastic build quality. This everytime.!!!

Ok so I had a phone call from the so called band leader. He's found a new bassist ( a pro). Bit of a bummer but you have got to take these rejections on the chin. I think if you do this with a good attitude. It makes it easy for them and im one for , if you have someone better that works for the music, forget about my playing, just go with what works regardless of my feelings or playing. That is how great music is created. But the whole situation is a bit bitter sweet for me though. On the one side, I found the drummer and on a practical level we agreed to do soul/funk cover's. The audience recognises them etc etc. Then comes in a new guitarist, and he recommends Dan. A vocalist who plays guitar and has all original music. He takes charge fairly quickly because they are his songs.(change your playing here/there blah blah Fair enough to fit the song). The rehearsals go on week after week. I think there are some funny fags involved, which im not into. Its not my music of choice, that being a mix of rocky acoustic soul stuff, but of course you have to adapt to the genre. Im a funky soul bass player wether that be good or bad, its the music I've listened to since I was 5 years old and thats my style. The thing is you always think its your fault, and that in a nutshell is my conundrum. Im a very very sensitive person so these situations make me Uber introspective. I guess my ramblings are about a question.. How do you deal with rejection from a band. Move on quickly, ? Find another band quickly?. Im currently having drumming lessons to broaden my rhythm section knowledge. end of rambling.

Dear Guitarists and bassists.. Trus rod etiquette.
bubinga5 replied to Nibody's topic in General Discussion
Ive had over 40 basses and evryone ive had ive adjusted the truss rod under tension with no problems. I adjust the truss rod in very small turns.literally1 cm then tune up or down. -
This won't be a sale you will see soon. I love the bass that much. As ambient said I will talk to John.
