A beauty!. An idea of 5he weight?
-
Hi i have my Beautiful Wal Fretless bass for sale. I picked this one up from the original owner 18 months ago and as much as I like it, I will not be using it in a gig situation. It plays like a dream and sounds fantastic. Overall the bass is in excellent condition for its age, with a couple dings on the headstock and 1 on the bottom at the strap lock . There is a tiny ding on the front of the body and another on the back of the neck. The ebony fingerboard is immaculate. There are a couple of cracks in the poly on the back of the head stock and beside one of the screws on the back plate. The Body is Shedua Facings with Mahogany core .. Its a stunning bass. It will be shipped in a Mono Vertigo case.

Saw them at Knebworth and they were terrific. Saw them some years ago when Lynyrd Skynyrd played suport and Skynyrd blew them away. In his prime Gillan was the best there was, but that was in the distant past. All credit to Morse for his contribution, but no Blackmore no Purple IMO
Well, if it was they did an outstanding job lol

If you look at the picture of the control plate, it seems that the brass insert has come out with the screw (bottom left as we look at it). If this is the case, it's just a case of removing the insert and glueing it back into the hole.
Got it. When I saw your post a little panic set in. Asking myself "oh s@#t. Could this be a cheap Chinese knock off"
But oops, looks like one of the brass nut inserts stuck to the control plate on you!
I see that. The pics are from the previous owner. I will sort that later today. So far so good with this bass. Its given me a kick in the arse in terms of practice. So much fun.
Beautiful bass. I notice it doesn't have the usual finish on the body, which I believe to be polyurethane. Has it been refinished in gloss? Looks much nicer like that.
I am the second owner. The previous owner purchased it new and the finish is original
May I ask Leroy, having read elsewhere on another thread that (like me) you are very aware of weight when it comes to basses, how are you coping with this beauty? Mick Karn is my favourite fretless player too.Japan were a great band.
Weight is an issue and the Wal is certainly significantly heavier than my chambered Sadowsky. However I have a Gruvgear Duostrap which is terrific at spreading the instrument weight across both shoulders. Highly recommended for any players out there with a dodgy shoulder. Plus my band have after 10 years, just finished up with our 3 hour Saturday night residency, so the gigs I do now are 2 hours or less. I cannot imagine that I will use the Wal exclusively for gigs, more likely in combination with a fretted bass. Then again if I was to put together a Japan tribute band, that might all change. Though if that were the case, I am afraid that a bass player with more skill than I, would be required to get close to the terrific playing of the great Mick Karn.
Mick Karntastic!
Mick Karn is my favourite fretless player. Yep, Jaco was just incredible, but Karn's playing resonates with me like no other.
Very nice congratulations. Must make you smile everytime you take it out of the case You can always get some fretless into the band I'm sure, regardless of musical Genre
Sure does. Impeccable craftsmanship on display in the build and design of this bass. I love the electronics which feature low pass filters which seem to be particularly suited to fretless and the unique hand made pickups. I feel a bit of Pearl Jams 'Even Flow' might be on its way into our set

I have had this for a couple of months now and what an impressive instrument this Wal bass is. Made in 1989, the body is shedua facings with mahogany core and ebony fretboard. The EQ on these is terrific, offering a variety of killer tones and It is in superb condition for its year. Not sure if I will ever gig it in anger, but having great fun with it for now noodling away in my study. Though I play in a classic rock band where fretted bass is king, I will have to find some space for this to sing in our set. It has been a long time since I played fretless, but so far the transition from fretted bass has gone smoothly. Terrific bass
Orange gas sounds awful. Should probably see a quack about that.

this my problem too, I've got hearing loss at around 6K Hz (not through playing in a band, work place damage and old age I think) which I wear hearing aids for, ACS moulded just cut out too much around this area leaving everything very muddy sounding, I do wear one, the ear next to the drummer, but use a 'Christmas tree' one in the other ear, seems to work for me
So long as the 'Christmas tree' is protecting that ear from damage. This is where I got caught out. Used the 'Christmas tree' ones for a couple of years, in the belief that I was protecting my hearing, but the onset of tinnitus and an examination by an audiologist indicated that these plugs were not offering proper protection.
-
anything is better than the loud permanent tinnitus and hearing loss I suffer from, seriously. Your hearing is priceless, buy the very best you can afford, maybe even more than you can afford
Totally agree.
-
I have been using ACS customs for the past 10 years and regular check ups at the Audiologist indicate they are doing a very fine job. I can hear everything when I gig. It feels like the volume is turned down to very comfortable level. Best cost effective investment I have ever made

Any idea what's the weight of one of these?
-
Where can these be picked up for £599?
-
In terms of micro amps, the cheap as chips (€299), but sadly no longer available Kustom KXB 500 is top of my list. Kicked the Tonehammer 500, various Markbass and Puma 900 out of the park. Have been using this baby for a couple if years and not even a hint of GAS. I like it so much that my back up amp is also a KXB500
U2 without doubt ever since their debut live EP with Party Girl I still cannot believe they released that pathetic, mistake ridden "solo". The most talentless drummer and bassist in a big name band ever probably.Oh and the guitarist is crap too of course. Apart from his rack of effects, he just plays one note and hands over to his rack lol
Could not have said it better myself. When they first came on the scene, our rock gods on this side of the pond were 'Lizzy and Rory Gallagher. I had grown up on a staple diet of Zeppelin, Purple, etc. Then U2 appeared on TV and I thought somebody was having a laugh.
