Double Albums That Work and the One That Don't
leroydiamond replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
I actually think stadium arcadium is ok, but its just ok,it would have been a better 13 track album.
Agree. I reckon there are 12 very good tunes that would have made for a terrific record -
Tough gig. Very emotional performance by all. Considering the context, I thought worked very well.

Back in the early 80's I got a job as DJ in a purpose built club with a state of the art Martin rig installed. Although the gig did not commence until 11pm, I used to get there for 8pm and play my Sabbath,Zep, Purple etc. LP's at huge volume and stand in the middle of the floor. I know where you are coming from
Maybe it's just me but I only ever like the sound of Jazz basses with both pickups on full, either pickup soloed sounds weak to me, whereas the BB has two great usable sounds in it (not counting the bridge soloed as I hate that sound too, on any bass!). I prefer a flatter fretboard like the Yamaha, the curvy 7.25" radius of the Sire is one of the things that puts me off trying one out.
Goes to show how subjective choosing an instrument is. For me a J bass with both pickups on full, never works and the 7.25" neck radius works really well. That probably is a result of playing old Fender Jazz basses for years. Despite several years of playing a Sadowsky, I am never totally comfortable with the flatter radius
Interesting, like I said, I'm also considering a BB1025X. Which I know are awesomesauce.....
I have also had my hands on a BB1024X and IMO the Sire wins hand down. As always try before you buy if possible

My usual bass is a Sadowsky NYC jazz and I was really impressed when I recently picked up my brothers Sire. Terrific build quality and to be honest I preferred the neck on the Sire to my Sadowsky. The EQ and range of tones was very good. The only downside for me was the weight, but then just about every bass seems heavy when compared with my 7lb Sadowsky. One thing is for sure, these cheap as chips basses are really good instruments, regardless of cost. Totally gigable on any stage IMO.

I have only had two AC basses in my hands. One of them was terrific, the other one had some weird build issues (string misalignment over the pickups and neck pocket issues). One of the reason why AC, Sadowsky and other U.S. built basses are so expensive in Euro land is because of the strong dollar. I purchased my NYC Sadowsky five years ago whilst residing in New York and it cost be less that 2.5 K Euro. To purchase the same spec bass on Thomann today would cost over twice the price. Is my bass worth that kind of money?.......not a chance. I have seen a number of off the rail basses that have undergone some tweaking in terms of pickups etc. and have turned out to be cracking instruments. Plus there is very good value in terms of buying a boutique bass in the UK. I had a Jaydee Roadie Active II for many years and it was a fantastic bass. I only let it go because it got too heavy for my ageing shoulder. Today this bass costs £1355 and represents tremendous value IMO. Similarly Shuker, AC guitars, Bravewood etc represent good value options in this regard.

What to buy for £35? Suggestions please.

Elixir strings would be my option. Great tone, feel lovely on the fingers and they last for a hell of a long time. I have a set on my bass for 6 months now and they are still spot on. All you got do is give them a wipe down immediately after gigs/rehearsals and thats it -
Whats sets these guys apart from other super groups (eg. Black Coutry Communion, Chicken Foot etc) is the quality of their songwriting IMO. Interesting lyrics, catchy choruses and Killer hooks. Terrific group

Really like your band and the bass tone is lovely. What guitar/amp are you using?. Well done!

MESA SUBWAY D-800 ON EBAY. WHAT DO YOU THINK
leroydiamond replied to fatwull's topic in General Discussion
I would not buy it. There is a lot of hype with regard to these amps but so what. At least buying from Thomann offers the option of a 30 day return not to mention the 3 year guarantee. -
Moving Hearts tomorrow night in Dublin. Cannot wait

Watched "Chelsea does drugs" last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The consumption of the psychedelic drug, ayahuasca in Peru was very interesting.

I have been through several micro amps over as many years. Got tired lifting heavy gear and my aching limbs were happy to sacrifice grid iron heft in favour of portability, small foot print and sheer convenience of small, light gear. Well over a year ago I pulled the trigger on the cheap as chips Kustom KXB500 class D bass amp (377 Euro). I intended to have it as a back up, but to my surprise the little thing kicked every micro I had tried right out of the ball park. It knocks out a thick, syrupy, fat tone with ease. Real heft in every note. My amp GAS in non existence since I started using this thing (other than wanting to purchase a second one). However sadly it is now out of production and therefore unavailable. Guess Kustom did not know what they had on their hands with this baby.
Big thanks to Alex at Barefaced - my 2 x 12 GB cab is now 'wheelie' better!!! Pictures attached - and the wheel was an exact match! Great work and thanks to all. Greg
Good result and a great cab you have there.
So I just ordered a CN 212 I was talking to Mark at Bass Direct about the CN v HDN 212, and he said there would be a longer wait on the HDN than first though, and they would cost more than first thought as the £ has crashed against the $. The first time I tried the CN 212 was alongside a Vanderkley 212MNT - while it was a really nice cabinet, the low end was a little much. So I think the CN is probably better suited to me than the HDN cabs.
Congrats. I have been using the CN212 for a while now and it never fails to impress. Enjoy

i reckon an email to agedhorse over on talkbass might do the trick. He was a senior engineer at Genz Benz when they were on the go and as far as I know, continues to provide service/customer support for Genz Benz products

The best rig you've ever had but...
leroydiamond replied to ChunkyMunky's topic in General Discussion
In recent years weight has become the deciding factor so its Sadowsky NYC (7lb) →Kustom KXB500 →Berg CN212 and it just so happens that this is the best rig I have ever used. -
Exactly this. So long as the earplugs attenuate reasonably evenly across the entire frequency range everything gets quieter, they won't single out just one instrument. If the wearer complains that they can't hear themselves with plugs in they're either a) using the wrong type of plugs (or filter) or b} using it as an excuse to turn up for egos sake.
True and hence the argument for wearing good quality earplugs. The ACS custom moulds do it for me.

Today marks the 30th Anniversary of Phil Lynott's passing. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Thanks JTUK, there happens to be a ACS centre just down the road from me. I'm getting some tomorrow.
A fantastic investment and the best way to go in terms of hearing protection IMO
Ampeg fridge and a new weightlifting hobby?
Have to say that although I recommend the CN212, I had the pleasure of using an Ampeg fridge powered with an Orange terror 1000 on a gig recently and it was total bass heaven.
