someone has also mentioned a Dan Armstrong Orange squeeze or a copy???
I have an Orange Sqeezer clone, it's a bit of an aquired taste (nice on fretless) but saying that I have been told it's a poor copy of the real thing so may not represent the true OS sound.

  3. I'd say a Boss CS-1 should do it, it really squashes the sound. I also have a knackered old Frontline compressor from the 80's that does a similar thing.

    Octave

I have used an OC2, Behringer and EBS before but prefer the MXR Octave Deluxe I now have, it sounds synthy like an OC2 but with more variation and better tracking.
  5. Not usually my kinda thing but I do like the look of the RV4.

I was a bit worried about doing a Google search on the word 'knobs'

Sadowsky knobs. Job done.
Same ones as I have ordered from RS - cheers
Ahem, what took you so long? Seriously though, glad to hear you found something suitable, and thanks for the update.
Sorry you did mention RS and I must have missed them when I first had a look, they are in their 'extended range' section. Thanks guys
  8. Brill, apart from not having a Push/Pull volume knob the rest sounds spot on. can't wait to try it out.

    Knobs

Well I went all over the web today and find these in the US, I did a search on the part number and found them hidden away on the RS site! £10 for delivery bumped the price up but cheaper then the Sasowsky ones. Job done. Thanks everyone. R.
  10. Cheers, that will save any guess work. my Varitone has a two way switch plaus a second 3 way one, I think the two way one will be a bypass switch, any idea what the other one does? Basschatters to the rescue once again R.

    Knobs

Little update. I nearly ordered the knobs today from the Sadowsky site as I have tried all the other sugestions but couldn't find anything the same and they wanted $27 in postage for 3 $7.50 knobs I'll have to have a rethink.
  12. Will do but I was getting a bit ahead of myself as I only have the control plate here today the body with the pups in for a project bass i'm putting together should turn up next week, I still need to sort out a neck. that's not an excuse for me talking a month to screw in 4 wires - honest
  13. Many thanks for the info I'll use the good old fashioned 'trial and error' method if no one comes up with some actual instructions.
  14. Here we go, a couple of pics. It's quite simple just four terminals one for each wire, well saying that the Nordstrands I have have 3 wires but Nordstrand says the extra one connects to the same place as the black wire on most systems. I wasn't keen on the trial and error system just in case I do some damage. Any help would be appreciated.
  15. No it's not a regular wiring set up, I have done a few of those in the past. I'll dig a camera out and post a pic.
  16. I have picked up a secondhand Varitone Jazz control plate to try out on a project bass I'm putting together but it didn't come with any wiring instructions, could anyone tell me what wires go where, better still if someone has original instructions they could scan for me that would be great. Thanks R.

How terribly sad, a great loss.
  18.
have you ordered the ultralites yet? I have 5 black clover 1/2" for sale in my bass parts clearout thread (link in my sig) Cant wait to see this done, hope you get your bridge soon.
Thanks very much for the offer, but I'm going to go for chrome 3/8 tuners on this bass. Hopefully I'll have some more to report soon on the build. Good luck with your sale items. R.
  19. Pick-ups have arrived and I have sent them on to Howard (Bass Doc) so he can route the body and make the scratchplate, I have also asked if he can route a hole for adjusting the truss rod at the body end of the neck. Still no sign of the bridge from the USA I ordered 2 weeks ago. I should be getting 4 Hipshot Ultrlite tuners soon, I will need to get an odd one to make a set of five but as long as I have one for now I can start thinking about the neck design.
  20. Look forward to seeing these progress, I don't understand all the technical stuff but might just learn a thing or two R.

I'll have a look at all the other companies tomorrow just in case I can get the same or similar on this side of the pond. otherwise Sadowsky it is R.

Anyone know where I can buy some knobs similar to the ones in the picture? can't see anything like them on the 'bay or the usual online guitar parts stores. Cheers R.
  23.
Actually I dug out some old cassettes from years back the other day which were recorded exactly as the OP describes - (from when I was deep in my Goth/Industrial/Grindcore phase) - and even though I'm all about the PC nowadays, there still a certain je ne sais quoi about the old stuff that I really rather like...
I'm glad it's not just me
  24.
There are a squillion differences in the recordings though Tape saturates gently, compressing the signal in a very pleasant way true, but you've also got a different ickle mic and mic-pre, that is also probably on its limits recording a band, often those little ghetto blaster and mono tape recorders had simple limiters on the inputs to help cope with loud input too, they will also be doing changing the mix. Tape tends to have less top end, (and often less bottom) and the inescapable hiss (even on metal with dolby) also changes things. Are you in the same room even? Are you using all the same gear? Nevertheless if you take your digital recordings and master them you will probably make a huge difference with some careful buss compression and a half decent tape saturation emulation, and maybe a bit of eq, even a touch of stereo widening (oo-errr). PM me and I'll do one for you if you like, best if you can send me an example of what you're after too (love a bit of audio mucking about me)....
Not the same room or equipment it would be a sad case if it was Got a new drummer so I'm going to try out recording the next session in September and will have a mess about with the results in Audacity or Cubase, I might give you a shout if I fail miserably.
  25. Thanks for your input. You can hear the individual instrument on the tapes they just seem to mix together more like they do at the rehearsal. a bit hard to explain. I'll try the mono thing, and some compression, might even try a cheap mic.
