1.
Ta it was nothing, I'm a huge Gabriel/Levin fan/anorak. Yep I've seen TL using that Sabre for Sledgehammer live. Interestingly he uses a 'Ray5 fretless with the Tony Levin Band so I'm guessing that the Sabre has the 'Hammer tone.
I have Waters Of Eden by TL, anything else I should add to that? fretless bass rather then Chapman Stick stuff. R.
2. Nice to see Shergold Guitars - I wonder where my fretless Maraton bass ended up. R.
3. Any excuse to slack off of work I found this quote from TL when talking about one of his solo cd's. used to favor an old Music Man Sabre fretless I have (did "Sledgehammer" on it) Nothing to do with effects but proves he did use a fretless Sabre. Good call on the chorus Ez. R.
4.
I'm sorry to say I think you're right, there is a bit of chorus in there. Should I go downstairs, get my CEB-3 and try it again? It's either that or debug a bunch of broken PHP... Be back in five.
5.
I should add it's also really easy and fun to play, even if you're a rubbish fretless player.
I don't actually have a fretless at the mo' and haven't played one in anger since the 80's so I'm sure I would be awful, listening to some Gabriel has me GASing for a fretless Stingray or Sterling though. R.
6.
That looks like a fretted Sabre to me (sounds like a fretless though. Maybe it's just got very visible lines). He's Tony Levin, he can play what he likes. It sounds like a Musicman fretless on the record though, could be a Stingray, could be a Sabre, who knows/cares. I've just sat down with my 'ray fretless, an OC-2, my LMB-3 cranked and a pick and got a pretty similar sound anyway, if that's any use to you.
Yeah, he's a great player and could probably make just about anything sound good. Cheers for the research with the OC-2 and LMB that's a great help. R.
7. See I knew I could count on you lot! I have have had a look at the Talkbass thread (cheers Mike) and watched this video of Peter Gabriel live in 93 which shows Tony Levin using a fretless Stingray with a pick. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aO-TM9GA3Tg&...feature=related It's looking like loads of compression and an OC-2 octaver are used to get that loverly sound. Thanks Chaps. R.
8. I have been listening to some old Peter Gabriel stuff at work this week and love the sound of the fretless bass on lots of the tracks, I was wondering how Tony Levin gets that growly almost synth like sound, I'm guessing an Octaver is involved. Anyway I thought I'd put it out there and see if any of you knowledgeable folk can shed some light on the subject. Cheers R.
9. Have a Sunny Saturday morning BUMP on me for a bargain Stingray 5.
10. That reminds me I'm still after a chrome one. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=33240 R.
11.
Just for info, I went to GAK a few months back to try the Warwick Hellborg rig that's on their website. The didn't have the rig and told me that they don't stock everything on the website but they can get hold of stuff if you want to try it. Might be worth checking they have the Overwaters before travelling.
You were right Woodster! I popped in there today and not an Overwater in sight, plenty of Warwick, Musicman and Fenders though.
12. Shame it doesn't have frets as I would quite like an Overwater 5. Have a bump on me! R.
13. I use an Edirol UA-25 and get an excellent recorded bass sound. Audacity is good audio recording program and it's free - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ R.
14. Hi BasBus, Interesting question, I have thought about it on and off today and the only answer I can come up with is quite a shallow one! I don't particularly like the look of headless basses, it's nothing to do with the tone and your plus points are all very valid. I really hope I didn't offend anyone with my earlier throw away comment. R.
15. Hi Kiwi, can I ask what you didn't like about the pick-ups? I'm not keen on headless basses. An Overwater will have to wait until the new year unless a secondhand one comes up for sale. R.
16. Thanks for that JD1, I'm get the impression from this thread that they don't have their own distinctive sound but play really well and in my option look stunning. R.
17. Good call Chris, I have e-mailed them to see if they have any in stock in the Brighton shop if not I may have to travel to The Bass Merchant.
18. I've seen this bass and quiet recently, it's a real looker. R.
19. Cheers Chaps, it's all very helpful info. I might take a trip to the Gallery or maybe to GAK in Brighton who have a couple of Perceptions on their web site so I guess they have them in the shop. I wouldn't want a neck wider then a Stingray 5. The Perception at The Gallery has dot markers and a different bridge to the new ones. Regards R.
20. Hi Rich, No need to apolgise as I'm interested to hear all points of view and I'll have to try one out myself before making a final decision. I kinda like the idea of smaller bodied basses I play a MM Sterling instead of a Stingray for the smaller body and Jazz Bass like profile of the neck. R.
21. Hello, I'm GASing for a another bass and really like the look of Overwater basses especially the Perception 5 string and wondered if anyone had one they would like to share their thoughts on, I'd also love to hear some sound clips to. Cheers R.
22. Thank goodness this beauty is not a 5 string or I would be a lot poorer!
23. A joy to deal with and the amp is like new. Many Thanks. R.
